Filzen Saddle

Hinterthal (1,000 metres or 3,281 feet above sea level) is found approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) to the east of Saalfelden and some 60 minutes southwest of the city of Salzburg, Austria. It is at the foot of the High King Mountain (Hochkönig) as part of Maria Alm, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. Hinterthal is situated at the end of the valley and as a result, is a quiet and peaceful place to visit. Mainly known as a winter ski resort and a summer hiking area, Hinterthal has close views of the High King Mountain Hochkönig and Sleeping Virgin Mountains. This was one of the first places non-Austrian people could buy homes in Austria, and consequently, it is home to many rich and famous people. There are several hotels in Hinterthal: Hotel Urslauerhof, Hotel Steinbock, Hotel Almhof, Hotel Jagdgut Wachtelhof and Balthasar's. Recently there has been a luxury development of several chalets and luxury apartments situated around Florysee, the lake in Hinterthal. Many of these are available for rent. For skiing Hinterthal has three ski lifts leaving the village, accessing over 150 kilometres (90 mi) of skiing, plus its own nursery slope and its own ski school, making it a good place to go for beginners. Hinterthal also has an impressive snow record due to its micro climate and the ski season usually starts in late November and lasts until mid April. Hinterthal is also part of the High King Mountain Ski Area.

Dienten am Hochkönig (German pronunciation: [ˈdiə̯ntn̩] ) is a municipality in the district of Zell am See (Pinzgau region), in the state of Salzburg in Austria. The population (as of May 2001) is 800. Dienten is also part of the High King Mountain Ski Area.

The Dienten Saddle (German: Dientner Sattel) is a mountain col at a height of 1,342 metres (4,403 ft) in the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. The pass is open all-year round and traversed by the Hochkönig Road (B 164) that links Bischofshofen in the east with Saalfelden in the west. Between these two places there is also the Filzen Saddle.

The Hochseiler (also Hochsailer) is a mountain, 2,793 m (AA), in the Hochkönig massif within the Berchtesgaden Alps. It lies on the boundary between the districts of Zell am See and St. Johann im Pongau in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The summit can be gained from the north along the Mooshammersteig path or from the Teufelslöcher over the Übergossene Alm along the southeastern arête (climbing grade I–II).

The Lamkopf (also Lammkopf) is a mountain, 2,846 m (AA), in the Hochkönig massif within the Berchtesgaden Alps. It lies in the Zell am See in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The peak can be climbed from the north the crossing between the Hochkönig and the Hochseiler or Übergossene Alm (climbing grade easy). The first summit cross was erected in 1960, but destroyed by lightning in 2011. In 2013 a new summit cross was erected.

The Brandhorn is a mountain, 2,610 m (AA), in the Berchtesgaden Alps in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It lies in the southeast of the Steinernes Meer, at the crossing to the Hochkönig. After the Selbhorn (2,655 m) and Schönfeldspitze (2,653 m) the Brandhorn is the third highest peak in the Steinernes Meer.

The Wildalmkirchl is a rocky peak, 2,578 m (AA), on the southern edge of the Steinernes Meer. It lies within the Austrian state of Salzburg, northeast of the village of Maria Alm and northwest of the Hochkönig massif. The first part of its name comes from the Wildalm ("wild alpine meadow"), a remote high valley located north of the Wildalmkirchl in the Austro-Bavarian border region in the Steinernes Meer range; the second part of its name is derived from the shape of the mountain which, from various standpoints resembles a church with its roof and tower. At a height of 2,457 m, northeast of the summit, is the Wildalmkirchl bothy or "wilderness hut" (Biwakschachtel) (open, 8 sleeping places). The Wildalmkirchl, along with the Schottmalhorn, is the most difficult mountain to climb in the Steinernes Meer; all ascents involve climbing. The easiest route runs from the bothy to the northeastern of the "church" formation and up onto the "roof" (crumbling, I); the route then crosses the exposed Kirchdachgrat arête forming the ridge of the "roof", and scales the very exposed summit block which requires moderately difficult climbing at grade (II); in all this takes about 40 minutes of climbing time from the bothy.

Selbhorn is with an elevation of 2,655 m (AA) the highest mountain in the Steinernes Meer, a sub-range of the Berchtesgaden Alps. It is located in the Austrian state Salzburg, close to the German border.

The Berchtesgaden Alps (German: Berchtesgadener Alpen, pronounced [bɛʁçtəsˈɡaːdənɐ ˈʔalpn̩]) are a mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps, named after the market town of Berchtesgaden located in the centre. It is crossed by the Austria–Germany border: the central part belongs to the Berchtesgadener Land district of southeastern Bavaria, Germany, while the adjacent area in the north, east and south is part of the Austrian state of Salzburg (Salzburger Land).

The Hochkönig is a mountain group containing the highest mountain (Hochkönig) in the Berchtesgaden Alps, Salzburgerland, Austria. The Berchtesgaden Alps form part of the Northern Limestone Alps.

Hochkönig is a large ski area on the Hochkönig massif in Salzburger Land, Austria. Hochkönig is part of Ski Amadé, a network of 28 ski areas on the same ski pass which make up the largest ski areas in Europe. The Hochkönig ski area consists of the five resorts of Maria Alm, Hintermoos, Hinterthal, Dienten am Hochkönig, and Mühlbach am Hochkönig and is an hour's drive from the city of Salzburg. The ski area spans eight mountains. There are 32 ski lifts and 112 km of prepared pistes; 52 km of them being classified as easy, 41 km as intermediate and 19 km as difficult. Hochkönig furthermore has 8 km of off-piste bowls with one of the highest tree lines in Europe. Due to its special microclimate, Hochkönig has one of the best snowfall records in Austria and has a long ski season, usually from early December to the middle of April.
