Ashprington

Tuckenhay is a hamlet in the South Hams in Devon, England, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of Totnes. It lies on the south bank of Bow Creek, the estuary of the Harbourne River, which flows into the River Dart. The name is first recorded only from 1550, and possibly means "at the oak enclosure" (Middle English atte oken hay).The village has an industrial past. A paper mill opened in 1829, and produced high quality hand-made paper until the late 20th century. An extension was opened in 1889, and has now been converted into holiday accommodation. Nearby on the quay is a restaurant-pub, the Maltsters Arms, once owned by the TV chef Keith Floyd.

Cornworthy Priory was a priory in Devon, England. It was founded in the early thirteenth century, for Augustinian nuns, and existed until 1536. At the Dissolution of the Monasteries the lands passed to the Harris family, and remained in the family until the 1640s. Thomas Harris who was a Serjeant-at-Law lived here with his wife Elizabeth. Their daughter, Anne, Lady Southwell, who was a noted poet, was born here.

Sharpham is an historic estate in the parish of Ashprington, Devon. The Georgian mansion house, known as Sharpham House, overlooks the River Dart and is a Grade I listed building. The house was commenced in about 1770 by the Royal Navy captain Philemon Pownoll (died 1780) to the designs of the architect Sir Robert Taylor (1714–1788). In the opinion of Nikolaus Pevsner it contains "one of the most spectacular and daring later 18th century staircase designs anywhere in England". The park and gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Part of the descent of Sharpham is shown on the Palmes family heraldic pedigree roll.

Cornworthy is a village and civil parish in the South Hams, Devon, England. The hamlet of East Cornworthy lies due east of the village at grid reference SX847552. The nearby Cornworthy Priory, originally established for nuns of the order of St. Austin, is now a Grade I listed building. Cornworthy Church contains the tomb of the Harris family, who were Lords of the Manor from the mid-sixteenth century onwards. It was erected by Lady Elizabeth Harris, widow of Sir Thomas Harris, in 1611, to the memory of her husband who died in 1610. Elizabeth is buried in the tomb, as are several other members of the family including Sir Edward Harris (died 1636), eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth. Edward spent much of his life in Ireland, where he became a substantial landowner and Chief Justice of Munster. He was the grandfather of the celebrated faith healer Valentine Greatrakes. Thomas and Elizabeth's family also included Anne who became a noted poet.

Bowden is an historic estate in Ashprington parish near Totnes in Devon, England. The present structure, known as "Bowden House", is a grade I listed building and is built in a range of styles, mainly English Baroque and Tudor, reflecting the range of periods it was built and edited over.

Washbourne is a hamlet in the South Hams in Devon, England, 4 miles (6 km) south of Totnes. It consists of three settlements, Higher Washbourne, Middle Washbourne and Lower Washbourne. Higher and Middle Washbourne are in the civil parish of Halwell and Moreleigh (in Halwell parish until 1988). Lower Washbourne is divided between the civil parishes of Ashprington and Cornworthy. Washbourne was mentioned in the Domesday Book, as Waseborne. The name is from the Old English wæsce "washing" and burna "stream", and so means "stream for washing", i.e. clothes or sheep. The stream is now known as the River Wash, a back-formation from the place.

St John's Church, Bridgetown is a Church of England place of worship built in 1832 by Edward St Maur, 11th Duke of Somerset for the tenants of his estate in Bridgetown, Devon. The original church was gutted by fire on 9 July 1976 owing to arson. The church was rebuilt and reconsecrated by Eric Mercer, the Bishop of Exeter in 1980. It is a Grade II listed building.When the church was built Edward St Maur contacted Henry Philpotts, the Bishop of Exeter as regards the consecration of the church. After a meeting and extensive correspondence between the Duke's solicitor and the Bishop's secretary it was resolved to make the church a chapel of ease attached to St Mary's Church, Berry Pomeroy. From 1843 until 1869 the church was aligned with the Free Church of England.

Bridgetown occupies the left bank of the Dart in the town of Totnes, Devon, England.It resulted from the first bridge being built across the river for the town. Totnes Trinitarian Priory, also known as the Trinitarian hospital of Warland was a medieval monastic house in the town of Totnes in Devon, England. It was founded in 1271, and dissolved in 1509.Parts of the priory's chapel still remain as ruins.

Totnes ( or ) is a market town and civil parish at the head of the estuary of the River Dart in Devon, England, within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is about 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Paignton, about 7 miles (11 km) west-southwest of Torquay and about 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Plymouth. It is the administrative centre of the South Hams District Council. Totnes has a long recorded history, dating back to 907, when its first castle was built. By the twelfth century it was already an important market town, and its former wealth and importance may be seen from the number of merchants' houses built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Today, the town has a sizeable alternative and "New Age" community, and is known as a place where one can live a bohemian lifestyle. Two electoral wards mention Totnes (Bridgetown and Town). Their combined populations at the 2011 UK Census was 8,076.
