Shibden Hall

Shibden is a small dispersed community in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. Shibden Hall has a north-west driveway to its lake, café and miniature railway; an adjoining driveway runs up a landscaped garden to the hall which hosts the West Yorkshire Folk Museum. The land sits on a north–south rise (gentle escarpment) between deep brooks, shared with more populous Southowram to the south.

Shibden Valley (also known as Shibden Dale) is to the east of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, where the community of Shibden lies. The name of the Shibden valley comes from scepe dene meaning "sheep valley" or "Sheep Vale". The area was heavily involved in wool production but was also a site of much coal production and flagstones from Northowram, Southowram and Hipperholme areas.The Red Beck stream flows down the valley, joining the River Calder at Brookfoot. It runs for 6 miles (10 km) and drains an area of 6 square miles (16 km2).Southowram stands on the southern side of the valley, and Northowram stands on the northern side of the valley. Shibden Valley stretches from Halifax through to Queensbury in the south-west of Bradford. A medieval road, the Magna Via, crosses west to east in the lower part of the valley over Beacon Hill. This was an ancient road between Halifax and Wakefield and the road still retains its Hollow way character with stone setts for some of the route. The A58 also crosses the valley as does the Caldervale line between Bradford Interchange and Halifax, though this is in a 1,105-yard (1,010 m) tunnel under Beacon Hill.Shibden Hall lies in the valley set in the grounds of Shibden Park which is accessible to the public and has walks, a boating lake and a miniature railway.

Halifax Minster is the minster church of Halifax, Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist. Formerly the parish church of the town, it was granted minster status in 2009. Halifax Minster is one of three churches in the county of West Yorkshire to be given this honorific title; the other two are Dewsbury Minster and Leeds Minster. Halifax Minster, which stands on the site of an earlier Norman church, was built during the 15th century, although the Rokeby and Holdsworth Chapels were not completed until around 1530. The organ was built by John Snetzler in 1763 and installed in 1766. Other notable features of the church include a medieval font cover, Jacobean box pews, and the tombstone of 19th-century diarist Anne Lister.

High Sunderland Hall was a manor house, built c. 1600 just outside Halifax, West Yorkshire and demolished in 1951 after falling into dereliction. The house is perhaps best known for having supposedly provided Emily Brontë with her description of Wuthering Heights, the house in her eponymous novel. The building stood just a few miles from Law Hill House, Southowram, where she spent some time as a school mistress.

Halifax railway station serves the town of Halifax in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Calder Valley line and is 17 miles (27 km) west from Leeds. Platform 2 is used by eastbound services towards Bradford and Leeds, while platform 1 accommodates westbound trains towards Brighouse, Huddersfield, Sowerby Bridge, Blackpool North and Manchester Victoria. The two routes divide about a mile south of the station at Dryclough Junction. To the east, the line also divided with the current line passing into Beacon Hill tunnel and a disused line via Halifax North Bridge to Ovenden, then going on to a junction at Holmfield with the Halifax High level line which had stations in Pellon and at St Paul's, Queens Road; and via Queensbury to Bradford and Keighley, for destinations in the North-West.

The Halifax transmitting station (grid reference SE103242) is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility which serves Halifax in Yorkshire, England, and is located on Southowram bank top overlooking the town from the East. Most of Halifax viewers are able to receive Emley Moor and the relay is only used in the north, east and centre of the town which is blocked by the bank on which the relay resides. Further afield, the Halifax relay also covers Elland, parts of Brighouse and along the Calder Valley as far as Sowerby Bridge. It is a television relay of Emley Moor, has its aerials at a height of 38 metres (125 ft) and is owned and operated by Arqiva, (site reference 10406). The Halifax transmitter is an A group relay with vertical polarisation and has been transmitting digital television signals since September 2011. It also transmits one analogue radio station and is used by the major mobile phone networks for their coverage of Halifax due to its location overlooking the entire town.

Northowram () is a village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England that stands to the east of Halifax on the north side of Shibden valley. Southowram stands on the southern side of the valley. The village was documented in the 19th century as being in the parish of Halifax, 2½ miles north-east of Halifax and 6½ miles from Bradford. Its population at that point was 6,841 and Northowram Hall was the seat of J.F. Dyson, Esq. The ward is now called Northowram and Shelf. The population at the 2011 Census was 11,618.The village has three churches: St Matthew's Church of England parish church, a Methodist church, and a Heywood United Reformed Church. St Matthew's is a Grade II listed building which is constructed of snecked local sandstone with a graded stone-slate roof. In addition, the village today has 21 shops and one school, Northowram Primary School.The serial killer John Christie was born at Black Boy House near the village in 1899.The village hosts an annual Scarecrow Festival.

The Square Chapel in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, was designed by Thomas Bradley and James Kershaw at the instigation of Titus Knight, a local preacher. Construction started in 1772 and the chapel was visited by John Wesley in July of that year. The Congregationalist chapel was typical of Nonconformist design in offering an uninterrupted view of the preacher, having no internal supporting structures. As its name suggests, the chapel has a square base. Atypically for the Calderdale region, it was built of red brick rather than local stone. In the 1850s a new chapel, which became the Square Congregational Church, was built on a site to the north, adjoining the chapel; the 1772 building was then used as a Sunday school.The steeple of the Square Congregational Church survives; the rest of the building was demolished in 1976. The steeple has been incorporated into a library built on the site of the church. Since 1992 the chapel has been used as an arts centre. The steeple and the chapel are Grade II* listed buildings.

Calderdale Industrial Museum is a museum in the town of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, dedicated to the industrial heritage of the area. The museum contains a number of working machines built between 1850 – 1930 all of which were either built or used in Halifax. The museum was initially opened in 1987 and received funding and support from Calderdale Metropolitan Council, although the museum and concept were leased to a private trust in February 2014. The museum was closed for renovation until September 2017. The museum is run by the volunteers of Calderdale Industrial Museum Association and receives no direct funding. It is currently open every Saturday from 10:00 till 16:00. An entry fee is charged to cover the every day overheads and current development projects.

Eureka! The National Children's Museum is an interactive educational museum for children in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, with a focus on learning through play. It is run as an educational charity and not-for-profit organisation. Eureka! is based on the North American model of children's museums, aimed at families with children aged 0–11 and encourages hands-on inter-generational learning.

Stoney (or Stony) Royd Cemetery is a cemetery in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Stoney Royd House was a brick house built for Christopher Rawson (1777-1849), the third son of John Rawson of Bolton "a little before 1764". It was demolished in the second half of the 20th century. One of its original gate lodges remains as part of the cemetery. In 1860 Halifax Corporation bought the site to turn it into a cemetery. Edward Milner won a competition for its design. It opened in 1861, and the northern section was consecrated on 11 September 1862. The southern section was for Nonconformist burials.Two chapels were built: one each for Church of England and Nonconformist funerals. The Church of England one was a cruciform Gothic Revival building with a tower, broach spire and polygonal apse. In 1973 the Department of the Environment made it a Grade II listed building. In 2007 its roof collapsed in a storm, and Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council obtained listed building consent to demolish it. The tower and spire survive. The cemetery contains monuments for 76 war dead, under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Halifax power station supplied electricity to the town of Halifax and the wider area from 1894 to the 1960s. It was owned and operated by Halifax Corporation until the nationalisation of the electricity supply industry in 1948. The power station was redeveloped several times and at its peak had a generating capacity of 48 MW.
