Monte Crostis

Monte Coglians (Friulian: Coliàns; German: Hohe Warte) is the highest mountain of the Carnic Alps, on the border between Italy (province of Udine) and Austria (Carinthia), west of the Monte Croce Carnico pass (Plöcken Pass). With its elevation of 2,780 m (9,121 ft), it is the highest peak of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy and of the Carnic and Gailtal Alps. Monte Coglians is characterised by karst topography.

The Carnic and Gailtal Alps (Italian: Alpi Carniche e della Gail, German: Karnische und Gailtaler Alpen) is a geographic grouping of mountain ranges belonging to the Southern Limestone Alps. They are located in Austria and Italy.

The twin peaks of the Kellerspitzen (Italian: Creta delle Chianevate) form the second highest mountain (2,774 m (AA)) in the Carnic Alps, a mountain range in the Southern Limestone Alps within both Austria and Italy. The two summits rise in the middle of the east-west oriented Kellerwandgrat, an arête that forms the main chain of the Carnic Alps here. The border between the Austrian state of Carinthia and the Italian Province of Udine runs along this ridge. The West Top (Westgipfel), also called the Grohmannspitze, is 2,718 m; the East or Main Top (Ostgipfel or Hauptgipfel) is 2,774 m. The mountain offers a wide panoramic view in all directions which, along with its numerous climbing routes, makes it a popular destination for mountaineers.

The Eiskar is the only existing glacier in the Carnic Alps, a mountain range in Austria and Italy. It is a typical cirque glacier that, thanks to its shady location and to avalanche breaks in its catchment area, has been able to survive at the relatively low height of 2160–2390 metres above sea level. Although the ice sheet in good times could calve over a rock wall down to the pasture of Valentinalm below, currently it is rapidly becoming a sheet of dead ice. In the period 2007–2014, however, no significant retreat was observed. The glacier may be accessed from below up a klettersteig, and from above quite easily via the Kellerwand rock face. Remains of defensive positions witness to the mountain war of 1915-1918.

The Lake Wolayer is an Austrian mountain lake on the Carinthian side of the Carnic Main Ridge, near the Plöcken Pass. It is the centrepiece of the Wolayer See and surrounding area nature reserve. Notable plant species include Alpine eryngo (Eryngium alpestre), sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata), and Austrian ribwort (Pleurospermum austriacum). The lake lies at an altitude of 1,951 m (6,401 ft) above sea level and covers an area of 4 hectares. It is located in a doline formed tectonically and reshaped by the Wolayer Glacier during the Ice Age. The catchment area spans approximately 60 ha (150 acres). Annual rainfall in the region ranges between 2,000 and 2,500 mm (79 and 98 in), maintaining a relatively constant water level despite the absence of surface inflow. The lakebed is covered with mud, which seals the lake. The western part of the lake slopes gently, while the eastern side is steeper. The deepest point is 13.9 m (46 ft) below the surface, but two-thirds of the lake is less than 5 m (16 ft) deep. Water that flows underground from the lake feeds two springs: one in Austrian territory and another in Italian territory, south of the Lambertenghi hut.

Plöcken Pass (German: Plöckenpass, Italian: Passo di Monte Croce Carnico) is a high mountain pass in the Carnic Alps mountain range at the border between the Austrian state of Carinthia and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. It links the market town of Kötschach-Mauthen in the Carinthian Gail Valley with the Paluzza municipality in the Carnia region of Friuli. A few miles to the west along the ridge is Mt. Coglians, with 2,780 m (9,121 ft) the highest peak of the Carnic and Gailtal Alps. Before reaching the upper Gail Valley, the pass road also crosses the lower Gailbergsattel at 981 m (3,219 ft) in the north.

Rigolato (Friulian: Rigulât) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 130 kilometres (81 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northwest of Udine. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 601 and an area of 30.5 square kilometres (11.8 mi2). Rigolato borders Comeglians, Forni Avoltri, Paluzza, and Prato Carnico.

The Pal Piccolo (German: Kleiner Pal, Friulian: Pal Piçul) is a mountain in the Carnic Alps, located near Plöcken Pass, on the border between the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Austrian state of Carinthia. It has an elevation of 1,866 metres.Due to its position, the Pal Piccolo was heavily contested between Italy and Austria-Hungary during the First World War, from May 1915 to October 1917; the trenches and fortifications that litter the mountain to this day, along with two chapels built by the Alpini, are now part of an open-air museum.

Ravascletto (Friulian: Monai or Ravasclêt) is a comune (municipality) in the Regional decentralization entity of Udine in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of Trieste and about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northwest of Udine. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 601 and an area of 26.3 square kilometres (10.2 mi2). Ravascletto borders the following municipalities: Cercivento, Comeglians, Ovaro, Paluzza, Sutrio.

The Gailtaler Polinik (also known as the Angerkofel) is a mountain, 2,332 m above sea level (AA), in the Carnic Alps in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It lies on the main ridge of the Carnics and is the highest peak of the Eastern group.It lies south of the market municipality of Kötschach-Mauthen and northeast of the Plöcken Pass. The easiest and shortest climb runs from the Plöckenhaus via the Spielbodenalm and Spielbodentörl to the summit of the Polinik. Its free-standing situation offers a very impressive panoramic view of the upper Gail valley and the Gailtal Alps.

Monte Zoncolan (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmonte ddzoŋkoˈlan]) is a mountain in the Carnic Alps, located in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, with an elevation of 1,750 metres (5,740 ft). It is one of the most demanding climbs in professional road bicycle racing, having been used in the Giro d'Italia seven times (2003, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, 2021) and the Giro d'Italia Femminile twice (1997, 2018). Gilberto Simoni was the winner of the first two stages finishing on Monte Zoncolan in the men's Giro while Ivan Basso won in 2010, Igor Antón won in 2011, Michael Rogers won in 2014 and Fabiana Luperini won at the first visit in the women's race. Chris Froome won the stage in 2018 Giro d'Italia (stage 14). The mountain also holds the ski resort of Ravascletto with 22 km of slopes and a skiable height between 950 and 2000 m.
