Bad Ragaz

Ragatz, also known as "Old Baths Pfäfers" or "Old Baths of Pfäfersin" in the 19th century and earlier, was a famous watering-place in the Swiss village of Bad Ragaz, situated on the left bank of the Rhine, and by rail 22 km north of Coire or 98 km S.E. of Zurich. It stood at a height of 509 m, at the entrance to the magnificent gorge of the Tamina, about 5 km up which by carriage road were the extraordinarily placed Baths of Pfafers (674 m). Since 1840 the hot mineral waters of Pfäfers were conducted in pipes to Ragatz, which is in a more pleasant position. Consequently, Ragatz much increased in importance since that date. In the churchyard is the grave of the philosopher Friedrich Schelling (d. here in 1854). About 3 km by road above Ragatz are the 17th-century buildings of the great Benedictine monastery, Pfäfers Abbey, to which all this region belonged until 1798; midway between them and Ragatz are the ruins of the 14th-century castle of Wartenstein. The monastery and baths were, after 1969, converted into museums and are open to the public. Johanna Spyri's classic book Heidi is briefly set in Ragatz.

Pfäfers Abbey (German: Kloster Pfäfers), also known as St. Pirminsberg from its position on a mountain, was a Benedictine monastery in Pfäfers near Bad Ragaz, in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Situated at the junction of the Tamina and Rhine valleys, it flourished as a religious house and owner of lands and serfs, as well as assuming extraordinary importance as a political and cultural centre of the Chur–Raetian region.

The Tamina is a river in Switzerland that originates on the flanks of Piz Sardona in the Glarus Alps and flows eastwards and northwards to finally merge with the Alpine Rhine after about 18 km total length.Along its way it flows into the reservoir Lake Gigerwald in the Calfeisen valley. At Vättis it is joined by the Gorbsbach, and flows northeast into the Mapraggsee. The lower section, heading northwards through Bad Pfäfers, forms a deep and narrow gorge called the Taminaschlucht. Finally, it meets the Rhine river near Bad Ragaz.Historically, the Tamina valley (Taminatal, also Vättnertal) was owned by the Pfäfers Abbey, joined to the canton of St. Gallen at its formation in 1803.

The Fläscherberg (also known as Regitzer Spitz) is a mountain of the Rätikon, overlooking the Rhine in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The closest locality is Fläsch on the southern side of the mountain. At the northern foot of the mountain is the border with Liechtenstein, and the town of Balzers.
