Legbourne

Legbourne Priory was a priory in the village of Legbourne, Lincolnshire, England. Founded by Robert Fitz Gilbert around 1150, the priory was for the nuns of Keddington (sometimes Hallington). The earliest visitation that survives is from 1440 when Bishop Alnwick reported a few irregularities which needed correction, but found most fault with the Prioress. She had been too fond of entertaining her own relations, and partly supported them with revenue from the priory. She had admitted an unlicensed chaplain to preach in the church, and counselled her nuns not to report anything amiss at the visitation.The priory was dissolved in 1536 on the grounds it had income of less than £200 per year. The last prioress being Joan Missenden The house was not, however, entirely dismantled at the time of the Lincolnshire Uprising. The king's commissioners, Millicent and Bellow, were still in the priory and busy at their work, when they were dragged out of it by the excited mob.The site of the priory is an ancient scheduled monument.

Legbourne Road was a railway station on the East Lincolnshire Railway which served the village of Legbourne in Lincolnshire between 1848 and 1964. The station was closed to passengers in 1953, and withdrawal of goods facilities took place in 1964. The line through the station closed in 1970. The station once housed a museum containing railway memorabilia; this closed in 1998 and the building is once again a private residence.

Little Cawthorpe is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-west from Legbourne, and 3 miles (5 km) south-east from the market town of Louth. Little Cawthorpe red-brick church, dedicated to St Helen, was built in 1860 by R. J. Withers to replace an earlier church. It was declared redundant in 1996 by the Diocese of Lincoln, and is a Grade II listed building. The Manor House is a small red-brick country house dating from 1673 with some 20th-century alterations and additions, and is Grade II* listed. The gate piers to the Manor House are Grade II listed and also date from 1673, although the wrought iron gates are 20th-century.The village public house is the 17th-century Royal Oak locally referred to as 'The Splash' due to the 200 metres (660 ft) long ford that runs adjacent to the premises. Kenwick Park Golf Club lies to the north of the village.

St Helen's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Little Cawthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Little Cawthorpe is about 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of the village of Legbourne, and 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Louth.

Stewton is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated about 2 miles (3.2 km) east from the town of Louth, in the Lincolnshire Wolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The population is included in the civil parish of Keddington. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village is written as "Stivetone", with 19 households, 3 acres of meadow and 5 acres of woodland.The Grade II* listed parish church is dedicated to Saint Andrew and dates from the 11th century, although it was rebuilt in 1866 by James Fowler of Louth. In 1902 the west porch was added.Stewton was the birthplace of William Spavens (1735–99), whose life story 'The Seaman's Narrative' is an important historical source about life in the Royal Navy. In it he describes how he was forced into the Navy by a press gang but later joined a press gang himself.

North Reston is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Reston, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England, and on the A157 road about 4 miles (6 km) south-east from the town of Louth. In 1961 the parish had a population of 36. On 1 April 1987 the parish was abolished and merged with South Reston to form "Reston".North Reston is listed in the 1086 Domesday Book with 13 households, a meadow of 30 acres (0.12 km2), woodland of 100 acres (0.40 km2), 2 mills, and one church.The parish church is dedicated to Saint Edith and a Grade II* listed building. Dating from the 11th century, it was largely rebuilt using greenstone and ironstone in 1868 by R. T. Withers, with some reused early medieval material.North Reston Hall is a Grade II listed late 17th-century painted brick farmhouse with early 19th-century additions and some 20th-century alterations.

Muckton is a village and former civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies between the A16 and A157 roads, 5 miles (8.0 km) south-east from Louth and approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) to the west of the village of Authorpe. It is in the Lincolnshire Wolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is in the civil parish of Burwell. Muckton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Muchetune", and is listed as having 9 households, with Ansgot of Burwell as Lord of the Manor.The medieval church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was rebuilt by James Fowler in 1878 although it retained its Norman chancel arch. It was declared redundant in May 1981 by the Diocese of Lincoln, and demolished in October 1982.Muckton Wood is a nature reserve about 0.6 miles (0.97 km) south of the village, purchased by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in 1983. It consists of ancient semi-natural woodland on a boulder clay soil.The Greenwich Prime Zero meridian line passes through the parish.

Castle Hill is the name given to the once substantial motte and bailey, perhaps double bailey, apparently associated with the then new town of Castle Carlton in the county of Lincolnshire, some 7 miles south-east of Louth, between the villages of North and South Reston (grid reference TF395836). It was founded in the 12th century by Hugh Bardolf.

Louth was a rural district in Lincolnshire, Parts of Lindsey from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 from Louth rural sanitary district. It did not include Louth, which was a separate municipal borough entirely surrounded by the rural district. Its boundaries changed little, losing Trusthorpe to the Mablethorpe and Sutton Urban District in 1925 and ceding suburbs to Louth. It was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974 and made part of the new East Lindsey district.

Castle Carlton is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Reston, in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of Louth, and just north of the A157 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 23. On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with South Reston.At Castle Carlton, there is a wide moat surrounding a mound on which stood a twelfth-century motte and bailey castle, most likely wooden, founded by Justiciar Hugh Bardolph, who is said to have slain a monster.The village had established itself as a commercial centre by the thirteenth century, reputedly after Hugh Bardolph developed it as a "new town", and it was sometimes known as Market Carlton. Today, it is considered a deserted medieval village, or DMV.The church was dedicated to the Holy Cross and was a small Perpendicular building. It was demolished in 1902.
