Geesthacht

The Elbe marshes (German: Elbmarsch) are an extensive region of marsh or polderland along the lower and middle reaches of the River Elbe in northern Germany. It is also referred to as the Lower Elbe Marsch by Dickinson and is region D24 in the BfN's list of the natural regions of Germany. The Germans refer to these polders as Marschen (singular: Marsch). Originally this flat strip of land along the Elbe was completely tidal. But following the construction of the barrage near Geesthacht, the Elbe is no longer affected by the tide above that point. The part of the Elbe remaining tidal is called the Unterelbe (Low Elbe). As a result of regular land reclamation with the help of Dutch settlers (a process known in German as Hollerkolonisation) large areas of the previously flood-prone Elbe marshes were diked and reclaimed for the purposes of cultivation. The Elbe marshes are very fertile and dominated by large areas of grassland. In addition to cattle rearing, especially of dairy herds, they are also used for arable farming. Dithmarschen is especially well known for its cabbages, the Altes Land is one of the largest fruit growing regions of central Europe, the Vierlande and Marschlande near Hamburg belong to the most important areas for growing vegetables and flowers. The Kehdinger Land and the Lüneburg Elbe marshes are home to numerous stud farms. For over 200 years the successful Hanoverian horses have been bred here. In the 1990s there were national reports from the Elbe marshes that there had been a higher incidence of leukaemia in the area around the GKSS Research Centre and the Krümmel nuclear power station. However, no direct link has been proven between the levels of illness and the nuclear facilities.

Marschacht is a municipality in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It completes the Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch with Tespe and Drage. Marschacht is only a few kilometres far away from Geesthacht. 1216: First documentary mention of the settlement as Hachede, then a part of Saxony. A change in the course of the Elbe cuts the settlement into two: Geesthacht (in Schleswig-Holstein) and Marschacht .

Elbmarsch (Northern Low Saxon: Elvmasch) is a Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the southern (left) bank of the river Elbe, approx. 30 km southeast of Hamburg, and 20 km north of Lüneburg. Its seat is in the village Marschacht. The name refers to the marshes (German: Marsch) along the Elbe. The Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch consists of the following municipalities: Drage Marschacht Tespe

Hohenhorn is a municipality in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Hohe Elbgeest is an Amt ("common administration for several smaller municipalities") in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 7 km north of Geesthacht, and 27 km east of Hamburg. Its seat is in Dassendorf. In 2008, the Amt of Aumühle-Wohltorf was disbanded and its municipalities (Aumühle, Wohltorf, and the unincorporated area of Sachsenwald) were folded into Hohe Elbgeest.

Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant is a German nuclear power plant in Geesthacht, Schleswig-Holstein, near Hamburg. It was taken into operation in 1983 and is owned 50% by Vattenfall via Vattenfall Europe Nuclear Energy GmbH and 50% by E.ON, and operated by the Swedish Vattenfall. Its gross power production is 1,401 MW, using a boiling water reactor. The reactor was the world's second largest of its type in commercial operation. It is nearly identical to three other German nuclear reactors, namely Brunsbüttel Nuclear Power Plant (near Hamburg), Philippsburg Nuclear Power Plant Block 1 and Isar Nuclear Power Plant Block 1, as well as the Austrian Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant, that never went into service.Since July 4, 2009, after the reactor is not running, and since 2011 it is definitely shutdown due to popular demand. Hamwarde is a municipality in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The town was an objective of, and was eventually captured by, the 2nd Bn, Gordon Highlanders, 227th Highland Brigade, part of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division during the operations to cross the River Elbe in April 1945.

Tespe is a municipality in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Situated on the left bank of the river Elbe, it abuts on the district of Lüneburg at the south and the west. Tespe is 5 km southeast of Geesthacht and about 30 kilometres southeast of Hamburg. The municipalities Tespe, Marschacht and Drage together form the Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch. On the opposite bank of the Elbe is the Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant.

Kröppelshagen-Fahrendorf is a municipality in the district of Lauenburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
