Alton (CDP), New Hampshire

Alton is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,894 at the 2020 census, up from 5,250 at the 2010 census. It is home to Alton Bay State Forest and Mount Major State Forest. The primary settlement in town, where 499 people resided at the 2020 census, is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as the Alton census-designated place (CDP) and is centered on the intersection of New Hampshire Route 11 and New Hampshire Route 140. The town also includes the village of Alton Bay, a long-time resort located beside Lake Winnipesaukee.

The Second Free Baptist Church is a historic church building on Main Street, south of Church Street in Alton, New Hampshire, United States. It is a wood-frame structure, built in 1853–54, and is the oldest extant Italianate church in Belknap County, with a little-altered exterior. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The First Congregational Church (once known as the Congregational Meetinghouse and now the Community Church of Alton) is a historic church building at 20 Church Street in Alton, New Hampshire, United States. Built in 1853–54, it is one of Belknap County's finest Greek Revival churches. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Monument Square Historic District of Alton, New Hampshire, encompasses the 19th-century heart of the town, a roughly triangular open space formed by the junction of Main Street (New Hampshire Route 11) and Old Wolfeboro Road between Factory Street and Church Street. It is notable for its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, and for its relatively uncommon shape, born out of the area's origin as a major road junction. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Prospect Mountain High School is a public high school located in Alton, New Hampshire, United States, and is attended by students from Alton and Barnstead. It has been in operation since 2004. Prospect Mountain's athletic teams are known as the Timberwolves.

It is represented in the United States House of Representatives by Democrat Chris Pappas.

The Merrymeeting River is a 10.0-mile-long (16.1 km) river in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of Lake Winnipesaukee, part of the Merrimack River watershed. The river begins at the outlet of Merrymeeting Lake in the town of New Durham. The river flows south through a chain of ponds to the village proper of New Durham. After passing under New Hampshire Route 11, the river enters Merrymeeting Marsh and turns sharply to the northwest, the course it will take the rest of the way to its end. The river crosses a small dam at Alton and reaches Lake Winnipesaukee at the community of Alton Bay, the southernmost point on the lake.

Alton Bay is an unincorporated community in the town of Alton, New Hampshire, United States, and is located on Alton Bay, a 4-mile-long (6 km) cove of Lake Winnipesaukee which forms the southernmost point on the lake. The village is part of the Lakes Region, a popular resort area of New Hampshire. Alton Bay is located at the intersection of New Hampshire Route 11 and Route 28A, 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the center of Alton. Route 11 is an east-west highway that crosses the entire state of New Hampshire, connecting Laconia to the west and Rochester to the east. Route 28A is a local highway that joins Route 28 4 miles (6 km) north of Alton Bay. In 1851 the village became the terminus of the Cochecho Railroad from Dover, New Hampshire. The rail line became the Lake Shore Railroad in 1890, continuing west to Lakeport in Laconia. It was in operation until 1935. The MS Mount Washington and its predecessor ships on Lake Winnipesaukee have made Alton Bay a stop since 1872. Alton Bay is home to the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center, a Christian retreat center and campground organized in 1863 as the Second Advent Camp Meeting, and incorporated as the Alton Bay Camp Meeting Association in 1876. It continues its year-round ministry by hosting retreat groups, summer camps, concerts, speakers, and summer residents, who live there and participate in the services of the Association.The village has a separate ZIP code (03810) from the rest of the town of Alton.

Meadow Pond Dam was an earthen dam in Alton, New Hampshire, in the United States, that collapsed in 1996, causing a fatal flood.

Alton Bay station is a former railroad station on New Hampshire Route 11 in Alton Bay, New Hampshire. Built in 1907 by the Boston and Maine Railroad, it is a surviving reminder of the importance of the railroad to the development of Alton Bay as a summer resort community. The building, now in use as a community center, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as Alton Bay Railroad Station.

Alton Bay State Forest is a 210-acre (85 ha) protected area in Alton, New Hampshire. It was acquired in 1915. It is bordered to the east by the village of Alton Bay at the south end of Lake Winnipesaukee.
