The Winterberg tunnel was built by the Imperial German Army through a ridge near Craonne, France during World War I. The 300 m (980 ft) underground passageway, which connected the German frontline to its rear echelon areas, was used to mitigate French artillery on this part of the line when moving troops and equipment into trenches. It was built at a depth of more than 20 m (66 ft). In 1917, more than 250 German soldiers were buried alive when the French launched a targeted barrage at both ends of the Winterberg tunnel. Only three men survived. No rescue attempt was launched due to continuing shelling of the area and a subsequent French counterattack. The tunnel was largely forgotten until a family of amateur historians announced they had found one of the tunnel's entrances in 2020.

In France, the Chemin des Dames ([ʃə.mɛ̃ de dam]; literally, the "ladies' path") is part of the route départementale (local road) D18 and runs east and west in the Aisne department, between in the west, the Route Nationale 2 (Laon to Soissons), and in the east, the D1044 at Corbeny. It is some 30 kilometres (19 mi) long and runs along a ridge between the valleys of the rivers Aisne and Ailette. It acquired the name in the 18th century, as it was the route taken by the two daughters of Louis XV, Adélaïde and Victoire, who were known as Ladies of France. At the time, it was scarcely a carriage road, but it was the most direct route between Paris and the Château de Boves, near Vauclair, on the far side of the Ailette. The château belonged to Françoise de Châlus, former mistress of Louis XV, Countess of Narbonne-Lara and former lady of honour to Adélaïde, whom the two ladies visited frequently. To make the way easier, the count had the road surfaced, and it gained its new name. The ridge's strategic importance first became evident in 1814 when Napoleon's young recruits defeated an army of Prussians and Russians at the Battle of Craonne.

The Arboretum of Craonne (French Arboretum de Craonne) is a 7-hectare arboretum located near Craonne, Aisne, Picardy, France. The arboretum was planted on the site of the former village of Craonne, totally devastated between April and May 1917 by French artillery during the First World War, and serves as the village's memorial. Its cratered landscape is a reminder of the war's extreme destruction. Today the arboretum contains 57 varieties of trees, together with signs displaying maps and photographs of the former village. It is open every day without an entry fee.

The canton of Craonne is a former administrative division in northern France. It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It had 6,085 inhabitants (2012). The canton comprised the following communes:
