The seven Coloured Earths are a geological formation and prominent tourist attraction found in the Chamarel plain of the Rivière Noire District in south-western Mauritius. It is a relatively small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow). The main feature of the place is that since these differently coloured sands spontaneously settle in different layers, dunes acquire a surrealistic, striped colouring. Since the earth was first exposed, rains have carved beautiful patterns into the hillside, creating an effect of earthen meringue.

Chamarel is a village in Mauritius mainly located in Rivière Noire District. The eastern part of the village lies in the Savanne District. The village is administered by the Chamarel Village Council under the aegis of the Rivière Noire District Council.Today it is primarily known for its scenic locations and nature attractions in its neighbourhood, among them are the Seven Coloured Earths, the Chamarel Falls, Ebony Forest Chamarel and the Black River Gorges National Park. The surrounding area is also known for its locally grown coffee. Chamerel's church Saint Anna was built is 1876 and is subject to a pilgrimage on the Assumption of Mary (August 15), during which the village hosts a fair associated with the pilgrimage as well.

The Gerald Durrell Endemic Wildlife Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary founded in 1984, in Western Mauritius. It is an area closed off to the public, in the Black River Gorge region, which is densely forested, and is used for breeding rare, endemic Mauritian species. Among the endangered species in the sanctuary is the Mauritius kestrel, once the rarest bird in the world with only 4 members left. It has been successfully bred and the population has now reached the capacity of Mauritius. The sanctuary is named after naturalist Gerald Durrell, who was associated with Mauritius' conservation movement from its inception in the 1970s, and who adopted the extinct Mauritian dodo as the logo for his Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, now Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. The sanctuary is run jointly by the National Parks and Conservation Service and Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, with the help of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Black River Gorges National Park is a national park in the hilly south-western part of Mauritius. It was proclaimed on June 15, 1994 and is managed by the National Parks and Conservation Service. It covers an area of 67.54 km² including humid upland forest, drier lowland forest and marshy heathland. Facilities for visitors include two information centres, picnic areas and 60 kilometres of trails. There are four field stations in the park which are used for National Parks and Conservation Service and Mauritian Wildlife Foundation research and conservation projects. The park protects most of the island's remaining rainforest although much of this has been degraded by introduced plants such as Chinese guava and privet and animals such as rusa deer and wild pigs. Several areas have been fenced off and invasive species have been eradicated from them to preserve native wildlife. Many endemic plants and animals still occur in the park including the Mauritian flying fox and all of the island's endemic birds: Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, Mauritius parakeet, Mauritius cuckooshrike, Mauritius bulbul, Mauritius olive white-eye, Mauritius grey white-eye and Mauritius fody. The park has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.

Le Morne Brabant [lə mɔʁn bʁa.bɑ̃] is a peninsula at the extreme southwestern tip of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius on the western side of the island. It is highlighted by an eponymous basaltic monolith with a summit 556 metres (1,824 ft) above sea level. The summit covers an area of over 12 hectares (30 acres). There are many caves and overhangs on the steep slopes. It is largely surrounded by a lagoon and is a well known tourist attraction. It is also a refuge for two rare plants, the Mandrinette and the Boucle d'Oreille. The peninsula of Le Morne benefits from a micro-climate. The mountain is named after the VOC-ship (Dutch East India Company) Brabant that ran aground here on 29 December 1783. Le Morne Brabant Mountain was submitted to the candidate list of the World Heritage Sites in 2003. In 2008, the nomination process concluded when UNESCO added the site to the World Heritage List.

La Preneuse is a public beach in western coast of the island Mauritius in the district of Rivière Noire located in the village of Black River. It was named after a French ship, the frigate Preneuse, which served as a commerce raider at Isle de France (as Mauritius was then known) and was also involved in a naval battle with the British in the 18th century. The beach is home to the best preserved Martello tower in Mauritius.

The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is a men's professional golf tournament, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Sunshine Tour, as well as formerly being sanctioned by the Asian Tour. It began in 2015 and was played at Heritage Golf Club in Bel-Ombre, Mauritius. In 2016 and 2018 the tournament was held at Anahita Golf Club, returning to Heritage Golf Club in 2017 and in 2019. The 2015 and 2016 events were played in May but in 2017 it was moved to December and was part of the 2018 European Tour schedule. In the second round of the inaugural tournament in 2015, Spain's Javier Colomo made a hole-in-one the par-4 9th hole, the first par-four ace in the history of all three co-sanctioning tours. It was his final hole of the day, and he had needed birdie or better to make the cut.In August 2022, it was confirmed that the tournament would return that December after a two-year hiatus.Heritage Golf Club in Bel-Ombre opened a new course in December 2023; La Réserve Golf Links. It hosted the 2023 tournament.

Rivière Noire (Mauritian Creole pronunciation: [ʁivjɛː nwɑː]) or Black River ([blak ɹivə]) is a district on the western side of the island of Mauritius. Rivière Noire translates to Black River. This region receives less rainfall than the others. The district has an area of 259 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and the population was estimated to be 80,939 as of 31 December 2015. It is the third largest district of Mauritius in area, but the smallest in terms of population. The district is mostly rural, but it also include the western part of the city of Port Louis and western part of Quatre Bornes.

Bel-Ombre is a village in Mauritius located in Savanne District. The village is administered by the Bel-Ombre Village Council under the aegis of the Savanne District Council. According to the 2011 census by Statistics Mauritius, the population was 2,417.

Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (Little Black River Peak) is the highest mountain on the island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. Located in the Rivière Noire District and rising to a height of 828 m (2,717 ft) above sea level, it forms part of the Black River mountain range. There are two other main mountain ranges in Mauritius: Moka-Port Louis and Grand Port-Savanne. The Moka-Port Louis range includes Pieter Both (820 m) and Le Pouce (811 m) mountains, the second and third highest summits respectively. Both are more famous than Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire in the southwest. The summit of Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire can be reached by various paths, the most common route is from Plaine Champagne, however there are routes from Chamarel and also from the Black River Gorges Visitors centre. On the summit there is a bench called "Bench 828".

Tamarin (Mauritian Creole pronunciation: [tamaʁɛ̃]) is a village on the western coast of Mauritius. It has long been the seat of the council district of Rivière Noire (Black River). The district council recently moved to its new headquarters in Bambous, this village being more accessible to the villagers. An old fisherman village, Tamarin has developed into a residential area and a moderated holiday resort. Tamarin is especially popular with surfers. The village is surrounded by hills and is very picturesque. It is located next to Black River, another fisherman's village on the west coast of the island. Tamarin has benefited from continuous development in recent years including a new commercial and leisure area as well as a new primary school.

Montagne Cocotte is a 771 metre tall mountain peak in Mauritius. It is located in the far south of the island nation, in the Savanne District and in the Black River Gorges National Park. On the mountain slopes can be seen high altitude rainforest.
