Hillesley

Rose Hill School was a co-educational, boarding and day, Pre-preparatory and Preparatory School for children aged 2–14 years old. It was situated in Cotswold countryside in the village of Alderley, near to Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire, England. Its motto, 'conando floreamus', translates as 'We are distinguished through effort'. The school closed on 2 September 2009 to merge with Querns Westonbirt School, together forming Rose Hill Westonbirt School which is co-located with Westonbirt School in nearby Tetbury.

Alderley House is a mid-19th century 23,843 square feet (2,215.1 m2) Grade II listed country house designed by Lewis Vulliamy and built for Robert Blagden Hale in the Cotswold village of Alderley, near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire, England. It was built on the site of The Lower House, Sir Matthew Hale's original 17th-century manor house, and is situated immediately to the southwest of St Kenelm's Church. In 2009 it was sold to an American oil tycoon, who restored the house as a private residence after 70 years serving as the private preparatory school Rose Hill School, Alderley.

Alderley (also previously known as Alderleigh) is a village and civil parish in the Stroud district of Gloucestershire, England, about fourteen miles southwest of Stroud and two miles south of Wotton-under-Edge. It is situated on the Cotswold Way near to the hamlets of Hillesley and Tresham and lies underneath Winner Hill between two brooks, the Ozleworth and Kilcott.

Hawkesbury is a hamlet consisting of a few cottages around a triangular green. It is also the name of a civil parish in the South Gloucestershire unitary authority in England in which Hawkesbury itself lies, it is located west of Hawkesbury Upton, off the A46 road. The civil parish includes Hawkesbury itself, the larger village of Hawkesbury Upton and the hamlets of Dunkirk, Petty France and Little Badminton. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 1,235, increasing to 1,263 at the 2011 census. Prior to 1991 what is now the Hillesley and Tresham parish in Stroud District formed the northern part of the parish. The village is in 'Cotswold Edge' electoral ward. This ward starts at Hawkesbury in the north and stretches south to Tormarton. The total population of this parish taken from the 2011 census was 3,381.The Cotswold Way passes by the two settlements. There is a monument (the 'Somerset Monument') on the Cotswold Edge at grid reference ST772878. The monument was erected in 1846 to commemorate General Lord Edward Somerset. He was a soldier son of the 5th Duke of Beaufort, (whose ancestral home is at Badminton), who had served with distinction at Waterloo. The first keeper of the monument was Shadrack Byfield, a one-armed veteran of the Anglo-American War of 1812, whose memoirs of that conflict have achieved a measure of fame.

General Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset (19 December 1776 – 1 September 1842) was a British soldier who fought during the Peninsular War and the War of the Seventh Coalition.

Hillesley and Tresham is a civil parish in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire, England. It had a population of 591 according to the 2001 census, decreasing to 391 at the 2011 census. The parish contains the villages of Hillesley and Tresham. The Lyvett (Levett) family, an Anglo-Norman family prominent in Sussex, were lords of the manor of Hillesley in 12th and 13th centuries. The family also held Boxwell, Chipping Sodbury and other places in Gloucestershire.The parish was formed in 1991 from part of the Hawkesbury parish in the Northavon district of Avon, which was transferred to Stroud District in Gloucestershire at the time.

The Somerset Monument in Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucestershire, England was built in 1846 to commemorate Lord Robert Edward Somerset. It is a Grade II* listed building, and on the Heritage at Risk register.

Hawkesbury Quarry (grid reference ST771873) is a 0.25-hectare (0.62-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near the village of Hawkesbury Upton, South Gloucestershire, notified in 1967. The site is notable for containing both the oolitic limestone of the northern Cotswolds, and the fossil-bearing limestone found further south.

The Church of St Mary in Hawkesbury, South Gloucestershire, England was built in the 12th century. It is a Grade I listed building.

Nind Nature Reserve (grid reference ST755915) is a 3.75-hectare (9.3-acre) nature reserve in Gloucestershire.The site is managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and is leased from the landowners. It is a former trout farm.The site and adjacent areas are designated as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS). These are the Nind Trout farm (2.7-hectare (6.7-acre)), an area of adjacent wet woodland (1.2-hectare (3.0-acre)) and a stretch of Ozleworth Brook (grid reference ST749919 to grid reference ST754916). The reserve forms part of the Berkeley Vale Water Vole Recovery Project’s habitat enhancement scheme.

Hawkesbury Upton is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, east of the much smaller Hawkesbury. It lies north of Horton, east of Dunkirk and south of Alderley and Hillesley. Hawkesbury Upton is close to the A46 road. The village lies on the Cotswold Way and exhibits many of the characteristics of a Cotswold village, including use of the local limestone in the majority of the buildings.The village has two pubs – the Beaufort Arms and the Fox Inn, both on the High Street – a primary school, a village shop, a post office and a hair salon. There is a village hall with a recreation ground and a cricket club.On the last Saturday in August, the annual Hawkesbury Horticultural Show takes place at the village hall and recreation ground. The show features a large marquee, where fruit, vegetables and flowers, as well as home baking, varied crafts, home made wine and beer, original photographs and pictures are exhibited – all produced by the community. There is entertainment in the arena, a carnival procession, fairground rides and local craft, trade and charity stalls. The show has run continuously since 1885 - never once cancelled for adverse weather or war - something which villagers are extremely proud of, although the 2020 show was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.
