Mourne (barony)

The Silent Valley Reservoir is a reservoir located in the Mourne Mountains near Kilkeel, County Down in Northern Ireland. It supplies most of the water for County Down, surrounding counties and most of Belfast. It is owned and maintained by Northern Ireland Water Limited (formerly DRD Water Service). The reservoir was built between 1923 and 1933 by a workforce of over 1,000 men, nine of whom died during construction.

The Binnian Tunnel (2.5 miles long) was constructed between 1947 and 1950/51 and is located under the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. The main purpose of the tunnel is to divert water from the Annalong Valley to the Silent Valley Reservoir underneath Slieve Binnian, after which the tunnel was named. A workforce of 150 was involved in two tunnelling teams which started from opposite ends and met in the middle nearly 800m under the roof of the mountain. When the two teams met in the middle on 6 December 1950, they were only inches out. The tunnel was created using drilling and blasting techniques. The shelters for the workers can be found on Slievenaglogh. The tunnel was designed to carry 90 million imperial gallons (410,000 m3) of water per day, be 2.5 miles (4.0 km) long, 7 feet (2.1 m) high and 8 feet (2.4 m) wide. The tunnel was officially opened in August 1952.

The Mourne Wall (Irish: Balla an Mhúrn) was constructed to enclose a catchment area of the Silent Valley Reservoir in the Mourne Mountains, Northern Ireland. The 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) high stone wall, which was built to keep livestock from contaminating water supplies, took almost twenty years to complete (1904 to 1922). The project was overseen by the Belfast City and District Water Commissioners.

Slieve Binnian (from Irish Sliabh Binneáin, meaning 'mountain of the little peaks') is one of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland, 9 km north of Kilkeel. It is the third-highest mountain in Northern Ireland at 747 metres (2,451 ft). The summit is broad and flat with rocky tors at the north and south ends, with the Back Castles, impressive towers of granite, in between. To the south-west is Wee Binnian (from Irish Broinn Bhinneáin, meaning 'breast of Binneán') (460m). It lies east of Silent Valley Reservoir and west of the Annalong Valley. The Mourne Wall also crosses over Slieve Binnian.The mountain is in the townland of Brackenagh East Upper (379 acres), the civil parish of Kilkeel and the historic barony of Mourne.

Attical or Atticall (from Irish Áit Tí Chathail, meaning 'place of Cathal's house') is a small village and townland (of 396 acres) in the Mourne Mountains of County Down, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the civil parish of Kilkeel and the historic barony of Mourne. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 153 people. It lies within the Newry and Mourne District Council area. The village has a Catholic maintained primary school, called Holy Cross, for 4–11 year olds. There is a Roman Catholic church, a shop and a Gaelic football club. The Cnocnafeola Cultural and Residential Centre offers accommodation for trekkers and visitors to the Mournes. The village is also home to the Holy Cross Accordion Band, which has won All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions on six occasions: 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. They were also crowned All Ireland Junior Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann champions in 2016.

St Joseph's High School Crossmaglen (Irish: Ardscoil Naomh Iosaif, Cros Mhic Lionnain) is a non selective, Catholic co-educational secondary school located in the town of Crossmaglen in the south of County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

The Tullaghmurray Lass was a prawn fishing boat based in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. On 14 February 2002 the Tullaghmurray Lass left Kilkeel Harbour to fish for prawns. When the boat failed to return when expected a huge search mission was organised involving local fishing boats, the RNLI, HM Coastguard, the Royal Navy and the Irish Navy. (including two helicopters, a Hawker-Siddeley Nimrod and the minesweeper HMS Bridport) The extensive search continued for two months, the issue being raised in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Eventually the main body of the wreckage and the bodies of the three crew were recovered. The three victims were from the same family. Michael Greene (53), his son (33) and grandson (8), both of whom were also called Michael, died in the accident. Initial reports suggested that the sinking was caused by a collision with a larger vessel. However the official inquest found that a gas explosion on the boat causing huge damage caused it to sink. In the same year another Kilkeel boat was lost in Carlingford Lough, causing one death. The accidents raised safety fears on the Kilkeel fleet. In 2006 the death of two further fishermen aboard the Greenhill from nearby port Ardglass raised further concerns.

Kilkeel High School is a controlled secondary school located in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is within the Southern Education and Library Board area.

Kilkeel (from Irish Cill Chaoil, meaning 'church of the narrow') is a small town, civil parish and townland (of 554 acres and 6521inh) in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is the southernmost town in Northern Ireland. It lies within the historic barony of Mourne. Kilkeel town is the main fishing port on the Down coast, and its harbour is home to the largest fishing fleet in Northern Ireland. It had a population of 6,633 people at the 2021 census. The town contains the ruins of a 14th-century church and fort, winding streets and terraced shops. It lies just south of the Mourne Mountains.

St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel is a Roman Catholic secondary school located in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is a co-educational school for pupils aged 11 to 18, with about 700 pupils enrolled.

Slieve Muck ( SLEEV MUK; from Irish Sliabh Muc, meaning 'pig mountain') is one of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has a height of 670.4 metres (2,199 ft). The River Bann has its source on the northern slope.Slieve Muck has three summits which are composed of Silurian shale covering the underlying granite. The shale forms an escarpment near the eastern side of the summits. The western slope is grassy and has a number of small streams flowing into the Deer's Meadow below. The eastern slope below the escarpment is made up of stony scree with lighter coloured areas appearing to spell out POV when seen from a distance, local people have used their imagination to complete the word Poverty, which has led to the mountain also being referred to as Poverty Mountain.
