City of Glenelg

Jane Nartare Beaumont (born 10 September 1956), Arnna Kathleen Beaumont (born 11 November 1958) and Grant Ellis Beaumont (born 12 July 1961), collectively known as the Beaumont children, were three Australian siblings who disappeared from Glenelg Beach near Adelaide, South Australia, on 26 January 1966 (Australia Day) in a suspected abduction and murder. At the time of their disappearance they were aged nine, seven, and four years respectively.Police investigations revealed that, on the day of their disappearance, several witnesses had seen the children on and near Glenelg Beach in the company of a tall man with fairish to light brown hair and a thin face with a sun-tanned complexion and medium build, aged in his mid-thirties. Confirmed sightings of the three children occurred at the Colley Reserve and at Wenzels Cake shop on Moseley Street, Glenelg. Despite numerous searches, neither the children nor their suspected companion were located. The case attracted widespread police and media attention in Australia and across the globe, quickly attracting numerous suspects, hoaxes and theories. The disappearance is widely credited with causing a change in Australian lifestyles, since parents began to believe that their children could no longer be presumed to be safe when unsupervised in public. The regular and widespread attention given to the case, its significance in Australian criminal history and the fact that the mystery of the children's disappearance has never been explained has led to the story being of continuous public interest more than half a century on. As of 2018, an $1 million reward has been offered for information related to the cold case by the South Australian government.

The Division of Hawker was an Australian Electoral Division in South Australia. The division was created in 1969 and abolished in 1993. It was named for Charles Hawker, who was a federal MP 1929–38. It was located in the southern suburbs of Adelaide and took in the suburbs of Ascot Park, Clovelly Park, Edwardstown, Glenelg, Goodwood and Morphettville. Hawker was located between the seats of Hindmarsh and Kingston. Originally created as a marginal Liberal seat prior to the 1969 election on a notional 5.8 percent two-party margin, the seat was won by Labor's Ralph Jacobi on a 7.9 percent two-party margin from a 13.7 percent two-party swing. Jacobi was elected during the height of the popularity of the SA state Labor government under Don Dunstan, and held the seat until his retirement at the 1987 election. However, his margins were successively reduced from the late 1970s onward. He survived two redistributions in the Liberals' favour–prior to the 1977 election from a marginal Labor seat to a notional marginal Liberal seat and again prior to the 1984 election from a fairly safe Labor seat to a notional marginal Labor seat. Jacobi handed the seat to Labor's Elizabeth Harvey, who held the seat for one term before being defeated by Liberal Chris Gallus at the 1990 election on a razor-edge 0.01 percent two-party margin from a 1.2 percent two-party swing, a victory of just 14 votes. Had just 14 Australian Democrats supporters ranked Harvey second on their ballots rather than Gallus, Harvey would have been re-elected. The seat was abolished prior to the 1993 election, with its territory being split between nearby Boothby and Hindmarsh. The Liberal hold on Boothby was reduced from a safe 10.7 two-party margin to a marginal notional 4.5 percent two-party margin while the Labor hold on Hindmarsh was reduced from a marginal 5.3 percent two-party vote to a marginal notional one percent two-party vote. Most of the seat's territory was absorbed by Labor-held Hindmarsh, and Gallus opted to transfer there rather than challenge fellow Liberal Steele Hall for Liberal preselection in Liberal-held Boothby. Gallus was successful for Liberal preselection in Hindmarsh and went on to narrowly win the seat.

Glenelg is a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Located on the shore of Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent, it has become a tourist destination due to its beach and many attractions, home to several hotels and dozens of restaurants. Established in 1836, it is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia. It was named after Lord Glenelg, a member of British Cabinet and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Through Lord Glenelg the name derives from Glenelg, Highland, Scotland.

St. Peter's Woodlands Grammar School (commonly known as St Peter's Woodlands or SPW) is an independent Anglican co-educational early learning and primary day school located in the seaside suburb of Glenelg, South Australia, Australia. Established in 1863 as St Peter's Glenelg, the school provides education for children from 18 months of age through to the end of their primary school years at Year 7. The early learning centre offers playgroup, toddler and preschool programs for children from 18 months of age. St Peter’s Woodlands is part of the Anglican Parish of Glenelg and, through its roots as the original Parish School, the school community is often involved in wider parish activities.

Glenelg railway station was the terminus of the Glenelg railway line and the Holdfast Bay railway line. It was located in the seaside suburb of Glenelg, South Australia.

Moseley Square is a public square in the City of Holdfast Bay at Glenelg, and was named for Henry J. Moseley, the builder and first publican of the Pier Hotel, Glenelg. Located between Jetty Road and Glenelg Beach, the Square is the location of the Glenelg Town Hall, Glenelg Jetty, the Stamford Grand Hotel and various fast-food outlets. It is the terminus of the Glenelg tram line (for many years the only tram line in Adelaide) from Adelaide. It is a site of major events including the Glenelg Jazz Festival and the City to Bay Fun Run.

The Pier Hotel was a public inn in Glenelg in the British colony, then Australian state, of South Australia.

The Beachouse is a family entertainment complex located on the foreshore at Glenelg in Adelaide, South Australia. The five-story complex also features a function room, The Function, Glenelg. The Beachouse replaced the old arcade/entertainment venue, Magic Mountain which stood from 1982 to 2004.

Luna Park Glenelg was an amusement park that operated at Glenelg, South Australia from 1930 until 1935. Plans for an amusement park at the seaside town were first raised in 1928, but not acted upon. In 1929, a lease to build a scenic railway at Colley Reserve was granted by the Glenelg Town Council. This lease was expanded in 1930 to include other rides and attractions (similar to Luna Park Melbourne), and Luna Park Glenelg opened on 8 October 1930.During the park's operation, there was tension between the park's owners and the council, with the owners complaining that they were not making enough to be profitable, and the council refusing to reduce rent or allow increased operating hours. Residents of the town also felt the amusement park was attracting undesirables. The owners began seeking alternate locations, placed the park into voluntary liquidation in late 1934, then purchased the company's assets at auction on 8 April 1935. The rides and amusements were relocated to Sydney, with Luna Park Sydney opened in October 1935.

Magic Mountain was a theme park in Glenelg, a beachside suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It opened in December 1982 and closed on 18 July 2004. Magic Mountain was popular among the young and "young at heart", but had also been criticised for its design, which was likened to a "giant dog dropping". It was demolished amid controversy late in 2004 as part of the final stage of the Holdfast Shores development and replaced by The Beachouse in 2006.

Glenelg Oval (currently ACH Group Stadium and formerly Gliderol Stadium @ Glenelg) is located on Brighton Road, Glenelg East, South Australia. The ground is primarily used for Australian rules football and cricket and is the home ground for the Glenelg Football Club in the SANFL competition. It is also the home of the Glenelg Cricket Club, and hosts local school football matches, with the Glenelg Primary School located beyond the southern end of the ground. with two seated grandstands holding 1,500.

Glenelg East is a residential suburb 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) south west of the centre of Adelaide, South Australia. It is characterised by quarter-acre blocks with heritage homes and parks intermingled with contemporary modern homes and low-rise multi-dwelling units.
