Lochloosa Lake

Lochloosa is an unincorporated community in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The community is located on the eastern shore of Lochloosa Lake along U.S. Route 301, 5.6 miles (9.0 km) south of Hawthorne. Lochloosa has a post office with ZIP code 32662, which opened on September 9, 1881.

Lochloosa Creek is a stream that flows from north to south through eastern Alachua County, Florida. Its watershed composed of 42.7 square miles (111 km2) through natural and Silvicultural land use. It is the largest tributary to Lochloosa Lake. Lochloosa Creek is longest creek in Alachua County.

Cross Creek is a natural waterway in Florida connecting Lochloosa Lake to Orange Lake, in southeastern Alachua County. It is 1.0 mile (1.6 km) long, and carries the outflow from Lochloosa Lake into Orange Lake. It is normally navigable by small boats, but has completely dried up in droughts. The creek has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water. County Road 325 crosses the creek. Cross Creek gives its name to the community of Cross Creek, which is famous as the home of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for the last 25 years of her life, and for being the subject of her memoir Cross Creek, which was made into a motion picture in 1983.

Orange Lake is in Alachua County, Florida, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Hawthorne. It has an area of about 12,550 acres (5,080 ha), and is part of the Orange Creek Basin, which is in turn part of the Oklawaha River watershed. Cross Creek flows into it from Lochloosa Lake, and Orange Creek drains it into the Rodman Reservoir. Orange Lake also receives water from Newnans Lake that has been diverted from its historic destination of Paynes Prairie. Orange Lake is noted for fishing, especially bass, with many fishing camps on its shores. The lake also has many natural floating islands, which have an "unusually high diversity", especially of amphibians.The Timucua village of Potano was located along the western shore of Orange Lake in 1539, when it was visited by the Hernando de Soto expedition. The town of Potano was moved to a site northwest of present-day Gainesville, Florida in 1584 after being burned by the Spanish. The Spanish Mission of San Buenaventura de Potano was established at the old site of the town by or before 1608. Remains of the town and the foundation of the mission church were discovered at the Richardson Site, 8AL100, in 2013. The lake was named for its location in a citrus-growing district.

Throughout its history, Hawthorne has been known for its agriculture, railroad, and rural lifestyle. Hawthorne's population was 1,478 at the 2020 census, with an area of 7.38 sq mi (19.1 km2).

Grove Park is an unincorporated community in Alachua County, Florida, United States, on Florida State Road 20 west of Hawthorne.Grove Park was established in the early 1880s on the Florida Southern Railway. In 1888, the community had 250 residents, a railroad station, post office, two stores, a hotel, school, church and a saw and planing mill. The 60-to-80-foot (18 to 24 m) wide streets were laid out in a rectangular grid, and were graded.The post office was opened in 1883, and closed in 1958.

Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail is a paved rail trail in Florida. It is protected as a 16-mile (26 km) long Florida State Park and runs from the City of Gainesville's Boulware Springs Water Works to the town of Hawthorne. It passes through the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and the Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area along a former Atlantic Coast Line Railroad line. The property was purchased by the state of Florida from CSX Transportation with money from the "trails from rails" program in late 1989. The trail opened for use in January 1992.

The McIntosh Presbyterian Church is an historic Carpenter Gothic style Presbyterian church located at 5825 Avenue F, corner of 7th Street, in McIntosh, Florida in the United States. The church was founded in 1885 as Center Point Church and the present building was built in 1907 and its name was changed to McIntosh Presbyterian Church on November 11, 1908. The church has gabled sidewalls facing each street. Each of these sidewalls features a large triptych lancet window. The main entrance is in a corner-facing bell tower set a 45 degree angle to the sidewalls.In 1989, the McIntosh Presbyterian Church was listed in A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture, published by the University of Florida Press. It is also a contributing property in the McIntosh Historic District. McIntosh Presbyterian Church is still an active church in the Presbytery of St. Augustine. Thomas Lane is currently its Commissioned Lay Pastor.
