Chequerbent railway station

Chequerbent railway station was a railway station in Westhoughton to the south-west of Bolton, Greater Manchester, on the line between Bolton and Leigh. It was open from 1831 until its replacement in 1885 by a later station.

Hunger Hill is a settlement and unparished area about 12 miles from Manchester, in the Bolton district, in the county of Greater Manchester, England. In 2020 it had an estimated population of 1317.

The Pretoria Pit disaster was a mining accident on 21 December 1910, when an underground explosion occurred at the Hulton Colliery Bank Pit No. 3, known as the Pretoria Pit, in Over Hulton, Westhoughton, then in the historic county of Lancashire, in North West England. A total of 344 men and boys lost their lives.

Hag Fold railway station is one of the local stations that lie on the Atherton line, between Wigan and Manchester, England. The station is located 13 miles (20 km) west of Manchester Victoria with regular Northern Trains services to these towns as well as Salford, Swinton, Walkden and Hindley. The station was built in 1987 by British Rail to serve the Hag Fold estate in Atherton, and is only manned during the morning and lunchtime period (06:25 to 12:55, weekdays only). Improvement works to the station are planned, in order to replace the flimsy platforms which have begun to suffer from considerable wear and tear and vandalism. There is step-free access to each platform via inclined ramps. Shelters, digital display screens and timetable poster boards are located on each side; there is also a P.A system provided to supply automated train running announcements.

Rumworth Lodge Reservoir is a large shallow reservoir in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England.It is located to the west of Bolton's A58 (Beaumont Road) and to the South-East of Lostock railway station. The water from the reservoir is not used for drinking water but provides compensation water so that the Middlebrook, which downstream becomes the River Croal, never runs dry. It is a magnet for birds, particularly on spring and autumn passage when many rare species have been recorded. Fields between the wood and the lodge are also the site of rare autumn crocus.

Chew Moor railway station briefly served the village of Chew Moor, between Lostock and Westhoughton, England.

Rumworth is an electoral ward of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 16,250. Historically it was part of the hundred of Salford in Lancashire and centre of the Parish of Deane which once covered roughly half of the present Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. St Mary's Church on which the parish was centred was in the township of Rumworth.

Atherton Laburnum Rovers Football Club is a football club based in Atherton, Greater Manchester, England. Full members of the Lancashire County FA, they are currently members of the North West Counties League Division One North and play at Crilly Park.

Lostock railway station serves the suburbs of Heaton and Lostock in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Built for the Liverpool and Bury Railway in 1852, the station was closed in 1966, then reopened on a smaller scale in 1988 to serve commuters. According to large scale Ordnance Survey maps and local usage, the surrounding area is named Lostock Junction and the station is referred to as such by many local people. Network Rail's "location map" uses the same name. This is similar to the situation in London where Clapham Junction railway station is in fact in Battersea, and the surrounding area has taken the name of Clapham Junction. Lostock itself is over a mile to the west of the station.

Lostock Junction Mills (also known as Rumworth Mill) were a pair of cotton spinning mills in Lostock, Bolton, England which stood on a narrow stretch of land between Heaton Road and the Middlebrook but have since been demolished. Mill No 1 was built in 1860 by the brothers Thomas and Joseph Rowland Heaton. In 1884 it was taken over by William Heaton and subsequently enlarged several times between 1886 and 1915. Mill No 2 was built in line next to Mill No 1 in 1900. In 1914 the business was described in Grace's Guide as cotton spinners specializing in the spinning of fine, super-combed sea island yarns, suitable for lace, muslin, harness twine, sewing thread, etc. Employees 1,200. William Heaton and Sons was formed to operate the two mills and the company's other mill at Delph Hill, Halliwell. By 1950 the company had evolved into Crosses and Heatons Ltd. In 1971 the Lostock Junction mills were closed. After demolition in 1973 they were replaced with housing based around Middlebrook Drive. The mill chimney was toppled by Fred Dibnah.

Daisy Hill railway station serves the Daisy Hill area of Westhoughton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Daisy Hill is one of the principal stations that lie on the Manchester-Southport Line, between Southport and Manchester. The station is located 14 miles (23 km) west of Manchester Victoria with regular Northern services to these towns as well as Salford, Swinton and Hindley, with onward trains to Kirkby and Southport. Due to considerable housing development in the area, it is now a well-used commuter station and (according to official Strategic Rail Authority figures) has in the past vied (with Atherton railway station and Walkden railway station) for the position of the most used station on the line. In the period 2004 to 2012 passenger usage has more than doubled. The slight drop in usage in 2006-07 may be due to statistical correction rather than genuine decline. A substantial increase in usage (2008–09, see SRA figures right) was reported. Part of this was explained in the SRA notes as an attempt more accurately to include local (transport executive) tickets. In the 1970s the service was sporadic, yet the railway station was fully staffed. This continued until recent times. Until 2008, Daisy Hill railway station (unlike the then more frequently used next railway station of Hindley and the railway stations of many other major towns and even cities in Britain) was continuously staffed from before the first train to after the last – just over 18 hours. Since 2008, however, the railway station ticket office has closed at 7.25pm (having opened at 6.25am). This is still a longer period of staffing than many other stations in the United Kingdom. The town's other station (Westhoughton railway station) which, until recently enjoyed an even greater patronage, has been unstaffed since 1974.
