Battle of Sankelmark

Oeversee (Danish: Oversø) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 km south of Flensburg. The Oeversee municipality was merged with Sankelmark on March 1, 2008. The new municipality is, however, still called Oeversee. Oeversee is part of the Amt ("collective municipality") Oeversee. The seat of the Amt is located in Tarp, which is close to Idstedt and Stolk, among other smaller towns in the area. The area was the place of many battles between the Germans and the Danes. The village of Oeversee (or to be more precise, Sankelmark) witnessed, for example, a battle between Austrian and Danish forces in the Second Schleswig War on February 6, 1864. There are still annual memorial services held for this event and celebrating the helpfulness of the citizens of Flensburg. The Austrian city of Graz named an alley and a school after Oeversee in recognition of this event, as the Austrian troops had been based in Graz. Returning the favor, Oeversee named a public square after Graz (Grazer Platz).

Jaruplund Højskole is the only Danish folk high school in Southern Schleswig, Germany and is located 10km south of the border in Flensburg. As a meeting point between two cultures, the school's programs focus on promoting greater understanding between the two nations and Europe at large.

The Flens-Arena (until November 2012 the Campushalle) is an indoor sporting arena located in Flensburg, north Germany. The capacity of the arena is 6,300 people. It is currently home to the SG Flensburg-Handewitt handball team.

The University of Flensburg (Europa-Universität Flensburg) is a university in the city of Flensburg, Germany. It was founded in 1994 and is the northernmost university in Germany. Although having full university status and the right to award PhDs, Europa-Universität Flensburg mainly offers courses in education and other fields of the social sciences. The university holds German-Danish study courses in cooperation with the University of Southern Denmark at Sønderborg, which involve an association with the Fachhochschule Flensburg.

Flensburger Brauerei is a brewery located in Flensburg in the Bundesland (federal state) of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is one of the last country-wide operating breweries not being part of a larger brewery group. The company was founded on September 6, 1888, by five citizens of Flensburg. Today it is still mainly held by the founder families Petersen and Dethleffsen.
