Pinhay

Pinhay Bay is a bay in Devon, on the south coast of England, about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) southwest of Lyme Regis and about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) east of Seaton. The bay receives its name from the hamlet of Pinhay which is situated slightly inland. Approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) further west, toward Axmouth and Seaton, lies Charton Bay, with a wider expanse of shingle beach than Pinhay Bay and the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliff stretching in a large terraces inland. This is accessible from Charton Goyle at the top of the cliff via a slightly arduous and worn path with many flights of wooden steps. This route was once popular but is long since abandoned after the demise of the village earlier in the 20th century. The surrounding terrain is rugged. To the west are Pinhay Cliffs and to the east Ware Cliffs. Pinhay Bay is part of the Jurassic Coast.

Ware is a hamlet in the East Devon district of Devon, England. The hamlet lies approximately 0.8 miles (1.3 km) south-west from Lyme Regis, just off the Jurassic Coast.

Furzehill Plantation is a woodland in Devon, England, near the village of Uplyme. It covers a total area of 1.22 hectares (3.01 acres). It is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust.

Ware Cliffs are a set of long cliffs which stretch westwards from the town of Lyme Regis in Dorset to the Ware hamlet in the East Devon district of Devon, England. They are situated near Pinhay Bay and their highest point is the Black Ven, which reaches a height of approximately 137 metres (449 ft). The exposed rock formation dates to the early Jurassic period around 199-189 million years ago and many fossils have been found along the beaches.

Monmouth Beach is a pebble and rock beach stretching approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) westwards from the harbour at Lyme Regis, West Dorset to Pinhay Bay, East Devon. It is part of the Jurassic Coast, situated below Ware Cliffs, and includes Poker's Pool, Virtle Rock and Chippel Bay. Virtle Rock is the farthest islet from the coast in Poker's Pool. The name derives from the landing here of Duke of Monmouth in 1685 during his attempt to take the crown from King James II. Following the defeat of the Duke of Monmouth, twelve locals were hanged on the beach on the order of the notorious "Hanging Judge" Jeffreys.

Holcombe is a hamlet in the district of East Devon in the English county of Devon. Holcombe is located northwest of the town of Lyme Regis about a mile west of Uplyme. The Iron Age "Holcombe Mirror", now in the British Museum, was found on a farm here in 1970 by Devon Archaeological Society when excavating the site of a Roman villa.

The Woodroffe School is a comprehensive school in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.

Uplyme is an English village and civil parish in East Devon on the Devon-Dorset border and the River Lym, adjacent to the Dorset coastal town of Lyme Regis. It has a population of approximately 1700 recounted as 1663 at the 2011 census. Uplyme is situated in the electoral ward of Trinity whose population at the above census was 2,521.

Lyme Regis railway station was the terminus of the Lyme Regis branch line in the west of the English county of Dorset. Serving the coastal resort town of Lyme Regis, it was sited high above the town centre as a result of the hilly nature of the local area. The line straddled the county boundary so that although the terminus was in Dorset most of the line lay in the neighbouring county of Devon.

The siege of Lyme Regis was an eight-week blockade during the First English Civil War. The port of Lyme Regis, in Dorset, was considered to be of strategic importance because of its position along the main shipping route between Bristol and the English Channel. Thomas Ceeley and Robert Blake commanded the town's Parliamentarian defences during the siege, which was laid by Prince Maurice between 20 April and 16 June 1644. At the start of the war, the people of Lyme Regis were predominantly Puritans, and the town was claimed by a pair of local members of parliament and garrisoned for the Parliamentarians. Most of the rest of Dorset, and the south-west of England in general, was under the control of the Royalists. The town, which only had sea-facing defences, feared an attack and Blake was charged with its fortification. He established a series of earthen defences featuring four forts which completely surrounded the town. King Charles I ordered the capture of the town in early 1644, and sent his nephew, Maurice, with around 4,000 troops. The siege was laid on 20 April, but despite a steady bombardment, and three attempts to storm the town by ground, the town's defences held fast. Lyme Regis was regularly re-provisioned and reinforced by sea, weakening the effectiveness of the siege, and on 14 June, Maurice withdrew from the siege in the face of a relieving army led by Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex.

Lyme Regis is a town in west Dorset, England, 25 miles (40 km) west of Dorchester and east of Exeter. Sometimes dubbed the "Pearl of Dorset", it lies by the English Channel at the Dorset–Devon border. It has noted fossils in cliffs and beaches on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site and heritage coast. The harbour wall, known as The Cobb, appears in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, the John Fowles novel The French Lieutenant's Woman and the 1981 film of that name, partly shot in the town. A former mayor and MP was Admiral Sir George Somers, who founded the English colonial settlement of Somers Isles, now Bermuda, where Lyme Regis is twinned with St George's. In July 2015, Lyme Regis joined Jamestown, Virginia in a Historic Atlantic Triangle with St George's. The 2011 census gave the urban area a population of 4,712, estimated at 4,805 in 2019.

Allhallows College, previously known as Allhallows School, was a British public school for boys in Devon, in the west of England. Predominantly a boarding school, but with some day boys, it was founded in Honiton about 1515, moved to a new home at Rousdon in the 1930s, and was closed in 1998, after a fall in the number of boys had led to a financial crisis. Although Lyme Regis is in Dorset, the new school site was over the county boundary in Devon. However, the postal address was "Near Lyme Regis, Dorset", which has led to confusion.
