Nyamiha (Minsk Metro)

The Nyamiha (Belarusian: Няміга, [nʲaˈmʲiɣa]; Russian: Немига, Nemiga, [nʲɪˈmʲiɡə]) is a river in Minsk. Today it is contained within a fabricated culvert. It discharges into the Svislach. The first mention of the river in historical chronicles is connected with the disastrous Battle on the Nemiga River, which took place on the riverbank in 1067, when the forces of the prince of Kievan Rus' defeated the forces of Polatsk princedom. The medieval epic The Tale of Igor's Campaign refers to the "bloody river banks of Nyamiha." Lines from the famous epic detail the battle: On the Nemiga the spread sheaves are heads, the flails that threshare of steel, lives are laid out on the threshing floor, souls are winnowed from bodies. Nemiga’s gory banks are not sowed goodly-sown with the bones of Russia’s sons.For a long time it was the second largest river flowing through Minsk, until it was adapted for its urban location by containment within a network of pipes. One part of the river was put into a pipe in 1926, and the rest in 1955. Today the river is a minor feature of the city environment, and the name Nyamiha more commonly refers to the street above. Niamiha Street is part of a shopping district famous for its amber craftwork. The Nyamiha metro station on the street was the site of a human stampede on May 30, 1999. Another incident on Nyamiha Street occurred on July 25, 2004, when a two-hour downpour in Minsk caused the storm sewers to overflow. Nyamiha Street and its environs were flooded.

The Nyamiha stampede took place at Nyamiha metro station in Minsk, Belarus. On May 30, 1999, a sudden thunderstorm caused a number of young people to race for shelter during an open-air concert nearby. The stampede was funneled into the blocked underpass of the metro station and many people (mostly young women) were killed in the ensuing crush when they started slipping on the wet pavement, falling, and trampling each other.The official death toll was 53. Belarus had a three-day mourning period after the event.

The Cold Synagogue (Yiddish: די קאַלטע שול, Belarusian: Халодная сінагога) was a masonry synagogue located in the center of Minsk on what is now Niamiha Street. It was not used as a place of study and therefore was not heated, which is why it received the name "Cold". The synagogue is considered the oldest in Minsk.

Minsk Theological Academy (Russian: Минская духовная академия имени святителя Кирилла Туровского, Belarusian: Мінская духоўная акадэмія імя свяціцеля Кірылы Тураўскага) is a university of Applied Sciences of the Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church. Named after Saint Cyril of Turaw. Geographically located within the Church of the Assumption in Žyrovičy, Slonim District, Grodno Voblast. The Academy is a private educational institution. Academy training programs meet the standards and rules set by the Education Committee of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. The term of study at the academy - 3 years. In the future it is planned to transfer the Academy to Minsk.

Minsk Voivodeship (Belarusian: Менскае ваяводзтва, Menskaje vajavodztva, Polish: Województwo mińskie, Lithuanian: Minsko vaivadija, Latin: Palatinatus Minscensis) was a unit of administrative division and local government in Grand Duchy of Lithuania since 1566 and later in Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, until the partitions of the Commonwealth in 1793. Centred on the city of Minsk and subordinate to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the region continued the traditions – and shared the borders – of several previously existing units of administrative division, notably a separate Duchy of Minsk, annexed by Lithuania in the 13th century. It was replaced with Minsk Governorate in 1793.

The Holy Spirit Cathedral or the Holy Ghost Cathedral (Belarusian: Кафедральны сабор Сашэсця Святога Духа) is a cathedral in Minsk, Belarus. Consecrated in honour of the Holy Spirit, it the mother church of the Belarusian Orthodox Church. It was built between 1633 and 1642 as a part Bernardine monastery during the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in a place of former male Orthodox monasteries. The site became Orthodox again in 1860. The cathedral is listed as a Belarusian Cultural heritage object and is considered one of the main landmarks in Minsk Upper city.

The Archdiocese of Minsk–Mohilev (Belarusian: Мінска–Магілёўская архідыяцэзія) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church covering the cities of Minsk and Mogilev in Belarus. It is a metropolitan see with three suffragan dioceses.

Maksim Bahdanovič Literary Museum is a museum in Minsk, Belarus. It is dedicated to the writer Maksim Bahdanovič (1891–1917). The work of the bibliographer Nina Vatatsy was central to the museum's foundation.

St. Joseph Church is a former Roman Catholic church in the Upper City (Minsk) district of Minsk, Belarus. The building, which is an example of the Baroque architecture style, was completed in 1752. The church was named after the monastery to which it belonged. It was closed in the 1860s and became an Eastern Orthodox Church. Since the late 19th century, it has been used to store archives.

The Trinity Suburb (Trinity Hill, or Trajeckaje pradmiescie) is a historical district of Minsk located in the north-eastern part of the historical centre on the left bank of the Svislach river. It was the trade and administrative centre of the capital of Belarus in the past. In the northwest of the Trinity Suburb there is Tatarskaya Slabada, settled by Lipka Tatars from the 15th century (first settlement recorded in 1428) to mid-20th century, and Starastinskaya Slaboda, in the north - Storozhevka, in the east - Zolotaya Gorka, in the south - the central regions of the High and Low Markets.The first Catholic church in Minsk was located on the territory of the suburb. There were also the Ascension Monastery with the church of the same name, which have not survived to this day, St. Boris and Gleb Church, the Basilian Convent of the Holy Trinity (partially preserved) and the Church and Monastery of the Catholic monastic order. Nowadays the suburb is one of the most favorite places of Minsk residents and guests of the capital. Modern buildings of the district include the National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Island of Tears, memorial that commemorates the Soviet soldiers died in the Afghanistan war in the 1970s. There are several hypotheses about the origin of the toponym "Trinity Hill". Most likely, the placename comes from the Catholic church of the Trinity, founded by Jogaila in 1390. According to another version, the toponym comes from the name of the defensive redoubt of the Holy Trinity, which was located near the Borisov outpost.

Church of St. Adalbert and Benedictine monastery (Belarusian: Касцёл Святога Войцеха і кляштар бенедыкцінак) was a Roman Catholic monastic complex in Minsk originally belonging to the Benedictine order, founded in the first half of the 17th century. It was taken from the order after the January Uprising, and transferred to Orthodox nuns in 1871. The monastery was demolished in the 1930s, and the former church was destroyed in 1964. Only the foundations of the church remain. Currently, the General Prosecutor's Office of Belarus is located on this site.

The Belarusian State Academy of Music (Беларуская дзяржаўная акадэмія музыкі) is the primary music and higher education institution and research center of musicology, folklore, aesthetics, music pedagogy in Belarus, based in Minsk. Minsk had earlier had a conservatory, Minsk Conservatory. It was founded in 1932 and up to 1992 was known as the Belarusian State Conservatory. In 2000 the Belarusian Academy of Music was granted status as the leading institution of the national system of education in the field of musical art, alongside the Belarusian State Academy of Arts.
