Huesca Cathedral

The Battle of Huesca was fought during the First Carlist War on May 24, 1837, between Spanish Constitutionalists and Carlists. During the course of the battle, the French Foreign Legion, which had been attached to the Cristinist army, suffered heavy casualties resulting in its strength being halved. The result of the battle was a decisive Carlist victory.

The Diocese of Huesca (Latin, Oscensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church located in north-eastern Spain, in the province of Huesca, part of the autonomous community of Aragón. The Diocese of Huesca is a suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Zaragoza. The diocese emcompasses parts of the province of Huesca in north-eastern Spain, seven parishes in the Broto valley and three within the territorial limits of the Archdiocese of Saragossa, one parish being situated in the city of Saragossa itself. The Diocese of Huesca was created in or before the 6th century; after the Moorish conquest of 713 its bishops moved to Aragon (the itinerant "Bishops of Aragon"). The episcopal seat was established in Jaca during 1063-1096, then finally moved back to Huesca after king Pedro I of Aragon took the city from the Moors in November 1096.

The Abbey of San Pedro el Viejo (Spanish: Monasterio de San Pedro el Viejo) is a former Benedictine monastery in the old town of Huesca, Aragon, Spain.

Huesca railway station serves the city of Huesca in the province of the same name, Aragon, Spain. The station is a terminus with four platforms faces and six tracks. It was opened in 2001, replacing an earlier station that had opened in 1864 along with the Zaragoza to Huesca railway. The old station was demolished not long after the opening of the new one. In 2016, the station was used by around 150,000 passengers.

Huesca (Spanish: [ˈweska]; Aragonese: Uesca) is a city in north-eastern Spain, within the autonomous community of Aragon. Estadio El Alcoraz is a football stadium in the city of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. It serves as the home ground of the city's foremost professional football club, SD Huesca. It was named after the battle of Alcoraz which took place there in 1096. It is located next to San Jorge's hill and it has a capacity of 7,638 people. The architect Raimundo Bambó was in charge of stadium's design and construction. The cost of his work was covered thanks to the efforts of José Maria Mur, the club's president at that time. He was the one who suggested building a stadium and started the project, which lasted for 4 years. The stadium's cost amounted to approximately 15 million pesetas (about 90,000 euros).It was opened on January 16, 1972 with a match between SD Huesca and Deportivo Aragón. In 1986, with the club drowning debts, the stadium went to auction. About 200 managers and fans of the club joined to form a society that won the auction, thus rescuing the stadium from the bank's embargo. Since then it has witnessed many social and sport events. These include a Copa del Rey match in 1990 between SD Huesca and Cádiz CF, which took place on December 13 and ended in a 0:0 tie followed by the Cádiz CF win by penalty shoot-out in the second game. As well as a match between Spain's Under-21 national football team and Greece, which took place on June 6, 2003, and ended in Spain winning 2:0.In the 2008/2009 season, after the promotion of SD Huesca to Segunda División, there were important enhancements in the stadium: roof building, extension of the central stand, reconstruction of the presidential box, changing rooms, offices, and benches. With the promotion of Huesca to La Liga, the stadium was expanded from less than 5,500 seats to 7,638 seats in 2018 . The stadium underwent an extensive renovation. The changes have affected the stands, VIP guests boxes and spaces, the press room, mixed zone, toilets, bars, and the parking.

The Battle of Alcoraz took place between 1094 and 1096 outside Huesca, pitting the besieging forces of Peter I of Aragon and Navarre against the allied forces of Al-Musta'in II of the Taifa of Zaragoza and García Ordóñez de Nájera and Gonzalo Núñez de Lara representing Alfonso VI of León and Castille. The siege had begun some two years earlier, in 1094, with Peter's father, Sancho Ramírez, who was encamped at the time in the Castle of Montearagon intent on retaking the City of Huesca from the Moors. While inspecting the siege efforts around the ramparts of Huesca, Sancho was struck and killed by an arrow. His son continued the siege, finally defeating the allied troops of Al-Musta'in that had come up from Zaragoza on the fields of Alcoraz, just outside of Huesca. Later legends hold that during the battle, Saint George appeared above the crown of Aragon, to inspire the Christian army who were heavily outnumbered in this first Reconquista. This parallels the legendary story of the Battle of Clavijo, over two hundred years earlier, where Saint James was similarly alleged to have appeared before the Christian forces of the Kingdom of Asturias in the battle against the Saracen armies. The heraldic war shield known as the Cross of Alcoraz which commemorated the battle was later adopted as the personal coat of arms of King Peter III of Aragon and subsequently incorporated into the flag of the Kingdom of Aragon where it remains to this day.
