Wanaque River

Wanaque () is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 11,116, reflecting an increase of 850 (+8.3%) from the 10,266 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 555 (+5.7%) from the 9,711 counted in the 1990 Census.

Wanaque–Midvale was a former commuter railroad station of the Erie Railroad's New York and Greenwood Lake Railway branch in Wanaque, New Jersey, United States. When built in 1873, the station served trains running from Pavonia Terminal in Jersey City to Sterling Forest on the New York–New Jersey border alongside Greenwood Lake and trains going to Ringwood on the Ringwood Branch. At the time there were two stations, one at Wanaque and one at Midvale. The next station northbound towards Sterling Forest was Boardville; heading towards Ringwood it was Erskine. The next station south was Haskell. A new station was built in 1902. Service was cut back from Sterling Forest to Wanaque–Midvale in 1935, when the railroad north of Erskine was abandoned for the construction of roadways through the area, including Passaic County Route 704 (East Shore Road). Service on the line continued into the control of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, becoming a shuttle service between Mountain View station in Wayne and Wanaque–Midvale from October 25, 1963–September 30, 1966. Service on the line ended on September 13, 1966, when the shuttle was eliminated. The station depot burned down on December 4, 1967 while vacant.

The Wanaque Borough Schools is a community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade from Wanaque, in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States.As of the 2018–19 school year, the district, comprising two schools, had an enrollment of 901 students and 92.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 9.8:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "DE", the fifth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.Students in public school for ninth through twelfth grades attend Lakeland Regional High School, which serves students from the Boroughs of Ringwood and Wanaque. The high school is located in Wanaque and is part of the Lakeland Regional High School District. As of the 2018–19 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 930 students and 86.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.8:1.

Passaic County ( pə-SAY-ik) is a county in the U.S. state of New Jersey that is part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population of Passaic County was enumerated at 524,118, an increase of 22,892 (4.6%) from the 501,226 counted at the 2010 U.S. Census, in turn an increase of 12,177 (+2.5%) from the 489,049 counted in the 2000 Census. The most populous place in Passaic County is Paterson, with 159,732 residents at the 2020 Census, more than 29% of the county's population, while West Milford covered 80.32 square miles (208.0 km2), the largest total area of any municipality and more than 40% of the county's area. Passaic County was created on February 7, 1837, from portions of Bergen and Essex counties.

The Ramapo River is a tributary of the Pompton River, approximately 30 mi (48 km) long, in southern New York and northern New Jersey in the United States.

Haskell was a former commuter railroad station in the Haskell section of Wanaque, Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. Located at the Doty Road grade crossing in Wanaque, trains operated on the Erie Railroad's New York and Greenwood Lake Railway between Pavonia Terminal in Jersey City and Wanaque–Midvale station. The next station to the north was Wanaque–Midvale while the next station to the south from c. 1909–1930 was Pompton Junction. Afterwards, the next stop was Pompton–Riverdale. Haskell station consisted of a single low-level side platform and a three-sided shelter for protection.Rail service in Haskell began on January 1, 1873 with the introduction of the Montclair Railway between Pavonia Terminal and Monks station in West Milford. However, Haskell was not an original station, with the two stops in Wanaque being at the crossing of modern County Route 511 known as Wanaque and the station in Midvale. With the establishment of a workers community for the DuPont smokeless powder plant in Wanaque, rail service began operating a stop known as Haskell c. 1909. In 1913, after some political wrangling, the Erie were forced to build a proper station depot, which came in 1916. Just 34 years later, fighting began between Wanaque and the railroad about demolishing the depot, resulting in a fight between August 1950 and March 1952, when the sides agreed to a deal. The railroad replaced the stucco station depot with a three-sided station shelter from Harrison. Service ended on September 30, 1966.

Haskell is an unincorporated community located within Wanaque Borough, in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. Haskell was formed in 1898 as a company town for a smokeless powder mill of the Laflin & Rand Powder Company. The town was named for Laflin & Rand company president Jonathan Haskell. The Haskell powder mill manufactured the W.A. .30 caliber smokeless powder used in United States Army service rifles until 1908. Laflin & Rand was purchased by DuPont in 1902, and the powder mill ceased operations in 1926. The area is served by the United States Postal Service as part of ZIP Code 07420. The community is located in suburban Northern New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population for ZIP Code Tabulation Area 07420 was 4,942.

Lakeland Regional High School is a comprehensive regional four-year public high school and school district serving students from the Boroughs of Ringwood and Wanaque (including its Haskell neighborhood), communities in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States, which have a combined population of about 25,000.Students come to the high school from the Ringwood Public School District and the Wanaque Borough Schools. Lakeland Regional High School is accredited by the State of New Jersey.As of the 2020–21 school year, the school had an enrollment of 924 students and 81.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.3:1. There were 68 students (7.4% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 4 (0.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "FG", the fourth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.The high school has 115 professional staff members, with 60% having advanced degrees. There are 95 teachers, five area supervisors, and four guidance counselors. Lakeland also has a substance awareness coordinator, a complete child study team, a school nurse, a library-media specialist, an athletic trainer and several teacher aides.

The Patriots' Path is a multi-use trail system in Morris County, New Jersey, open to cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders, consisting of a 55-mile main trail with 35 miles of spur trails. The main trail is marked with white blazes or a white circular blaze with a brown tree. The spur trails are marked with blue blazes or a white circle with a blue tree, while the side spur trails are marked with a red blaze or a white circle with a red tree.Patriots' Path stretches from East Hanover, where it connects with the Lenape Trail in Essex County, to Allamuchy Mountain State Park in Sussex County, and the Village of High Bridge in Hunterdon County. In southern Morris County, the path travels mostly along the corridors of the Whippany River, Black River, and Raritan River. Different portions of Patriots' Path include bike trails (paved), cross-country skiing, equestrian trails, and hiking trails (handicap accessible). Parts of the trail are along the right of way of the former Rockaway Valley Railroad.The Patriots’ Path is a part of two other larger trail systems. It is included in the Liberty–Water Gap Trail and the September 11th National Memorial Trail. The Liberty–Water Gap Trail is approximately 150 miles and the September 11th National Memorial Trail is 1300 miles long. The Patriots’ Path is a popular location for scouts to complete their Eagle Project. Some of the Eagle Projects that scouts have completed on the Patriots’ Path include installing benches, extending the trail and installing proper signage, and trail renovation and beautification. A particularly popular project to complete is installing a footbridge on the trail.

Wanaque Reservoir is a man-made lake located within Wanaque and Ringwood, New Jersey along the Wanaque River. The reservoir came into being in 1928 by the construction of the Raymond Dam along the river in Wanaque. Besides the Wanaque River, the reservoir receives water from two diversions: the Pompton Lakes intake, which takes water from the Ramapo River, and the Two Bridges intake, which takes water from the Pompton River. It is the second largest reservoir in New Jersey by volume, after Round Valley Reservoir. It is the second largest body of water in New Jersey by area, after Lake Hopatcong.

The Phoenix Center for Rehabilitation and Pediatrics is a long-term care center and nursing home in Haskell, New Jersey. It is a for-profit center that provides treatment to children who are medically fragile or are receiving palliative care. As of October 2018, it had 92 pediatric long-term care beds and 135 for elderly residents, also operating as a long-term nursing home and a rehabilitation center. In July 2019, it was sold and renamed the North Jersey Pediatric and Adult Nursing and Wellness Center.In late 2018, a severe adenovirus outbreak at the facility received international attention. Ultimately, 11 children died and 36 residents and one staff member were diagnosed in "one of the nation's deadliest long-term-care outbreaks."

Ramapo Lake is a 120-acre man-made lake in Ramapo Mountain State Forest in Northern New Jersey.Ramapo Lake originally consisting of a 25-acre pond named Rotten Poel (Rats Pond) by the Dutch. It was enlarged and deepened by Jacob Rogers in the late 19th century when he built a stone dam across its outlet.
