Blawith and Subberthwaite is a civil parish in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. It is situated in the Lake District National Park, and includes the villages of Blawith and Subberthwaite. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 189. At the 2011 census Blawith and Subberthwaite was grouped with Torver giving a total population of 265.Blawith has an area of 2,995 acres on the west side of the Crake and the lower end of Coniston Water which is about a mile and a half north of Blawith. The village is bordered to the west and north by Blawith Common, a large area of rough grazing which is used by those who hold common rights. Parts of the common are designated as having of Special Scientific Interest. The name Blawith should be pronounced Blaath, which means wolf, creatures once common in the area. In 1870–72 Blawith was described as: "a township-chapelry in Ulverston parish, Lancashire; on the river Crake. Real property, £1,082. Pop., 193. Houses, 39."In 1870–72 Subberthwaite was described as: "a township in Ulverstone parish, Lancashire; Acres, 1,246. Real property, £764. Pop., 152. Houses, 29."

Furness ( FUR-niss, fur-NESS) is a peninsula and region of Cumbria, England. Together with the Cartmel Peninsula it forms North Lonsdale, historically an exclave of Lancashire. On 1 April 2023 it became part of the new unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness. The Furness Peninsula, also known as Low Furness, is an area of villages, agricultural land and low-lying moorland, with the industrial town of Barrow-in-Furness at its head. The peninsula is bordered by the estuaries of the River Duddon to the west and the River Leven in Morecambe Bay to the east. The wider region of Furness consists of the peninsula and the area known as High Furness, which is a relatively mountainous and sparsely populated part of England, extending inland into the Lake District and containing the Furness Fells. The inland boundary of the region is formed by the rivers Leven, Brathay and Duddon, and the lake of Windermere. Off the southern tip of Furness is Walney Island, 11 miles (18 kilometres) long, as well as several smaller islands. The Borough of Barrow-in-Furness, which developed when the Furness iron industry flourished in the 19th century, is the region's largest settlement, with a population of over 91,000. The remainder of Furness is predominantly rural, with Ulverston the only other settlement with more than 10,000 people. Much of High Furness consists of moorland, mountain or woodland environments.

Nibthwaite is a village in the South Lakeland District in the county of Cumbria in the northwest of England. It is in the civil parish of Colton, and on the east side of Coniston Water. It is in the historic county of Lancashire. There was a furnace and forge at Nibthwaite from 1751 to 1840, later (c1850) replaced by a bobbin mill, see Harrison Ainslie The family of the author Arthur Ransome regularly holidayed at Nibthwaite when he was a child, and he incorporated local places and customs into the five of his Swallows and Amazons series of children's books which were set in the Lake District, around a lake based on both Coniston Water and Windermere.

Lowick is a village and civil parish in the South Lakeland district of the English county of Cumbria. Prior to 1 April 1974 it was part of Lancashire, the change being as a result of the Local Government Act 1972. The village appears in records as early as 1202 as Lofwik, and later as Laufwik: the name derives from the Old Norse "Lauf-vík" (English: Leafy Bay). In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 224, increasing slightly at the 2011 census to 227.The parish is made up of several small hamlets, including Woodgate, Lowick Bridge and Lowick Green. Lowick Green has a red phone box, one of a number surviving in rural Britain. For hundreds of years, Lowick was a two-pub parish, with the "Red Lion" at Lowick Bridge and the "Farmer's Arms" at Lowick Green. However, from 2021, the Farmer's Arms is run as a community hub.The village had its own primary school until 2004 when Cumbria County Council closed the school with 18 pupils. Numbers had fallen increasingly over the latter years and a number of local families already sent their children to larger schools nearby.There is an annual event in the village called the Lowick Show, known locally as the L'al Royal, which attracts visitors from nearby towns and villages. There are games, stalls, cattle, ferret and dog shows, as well as competitions for bakery, and arts and crafts.

Beacon Fell is a fell in the southern Lake District of England with an altitude of 836 feet (255 m). It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.Geographically, the fell is in the Blawith Fells to the west of the bottom end of Coniston Water. The fell is above Beacon Tarn and can be accessed from quiet paths off the main road from Water Yeat to Torver. Wainwright describes an ascent from Brown Howe, passing over the summit and down to Beacon Tarn (also visited on his Woodland Fell walk) before returning on the western slopes on the line of the Cumbria Way. Although it is relatively low, it has panoramic views of the Coniston Fells, Coniston Water and Morecambe Bay. Beacon Tarn fault, part of the Coniston Fault complex, passes under the East side of Beacon Tarn. The fault line runs in an approx N 10 degrees E direction.

Woodland Fell is an upland area in the south of the English Lake District, south of Torver, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Wainwright's route is a clockwise circuit from the hamlet of Woodland, and includes the summits of Yew Bank at 678 feet (207 m) and Wool Knott at 730 feet (220 m), with Beacon Tarn (also visited on his Beacon Fell walk) between them. He describes the walk as: "a connoisseur's piece, every step an uninhibited joy, every corner a delight."

Bandrake Head is a village in Cumbria, England.

Peel Island (formerly known as Montague Island or the Gridiron) is one of the three islands of Coniston Water in the English Lake District, Cumbria. The two others are Fir Island (which is connected to the shore unless the water is particularly high) and Oak Island. It is most famous for being one of the inspirations for Arthur Ransome's Wild Cat Island. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, and belongs to the National Trust.

North Lonsdale was a rural district in the county of Lancashire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 as the Ulverston Rural District, and was renamed in 1960. It covered all of North Lonsdale (the exclave of Lancashire north of Morecambe Bay), apart from the towns of Barrow-in-Furness, Dalton-in-Furness, Grange and Ulverston. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. It was combined with Grange and Ulverston, along with districts from other counties, to form the district of South Lakeland in Cumbria.

Gawthwaite is a village in Cumbria, England. It is located along the A5092 road, 4.8 miles (7.7 km) north of Ulverston. It is on the Grize Beck stream, on the edge of Lake District National Park. Gawthwaite High Quarry is in the vicinity. Before it became the A5092, the road through the village was the B5280: this can still be seen on the two village roadsigns, which are clearly visible on Google Street View.

Spark Bridge is a former mill village in Cumbria, England, within the Lake District National Park, and within the historic boundaries of Lancashire. The village is situated away from the main road on the river Crake which flows from Coniston Water to Morecambe Bay at Greenodd. The village green which is next to and gives access to the river is in the middle of the village surrounded by well maintained white painted cottages.

Blawith Knott is a hill in the south of the English Lake District, near Woodland, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 806 feet (246 m) and Wainwright's clockwise route from the fell road to the south-west also includes Tottlebank Height at 775 feet (236 m). He describes Blawith Knott as "a magnificent viewpoint", with both a panorama of Lake District fells to the north and, to the east to south, views which, on a clear day, include the Howgill Fells, Whernside and Ingleborough.
