Hato Rey Sur is one of the 18 barrios of the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hato Rey Sur was a barrio of the former municipality of Rio Piedras, before it was merged with the municipality of San Juan in 1951. Following the annexation of Rio Piedras, the city of San Juan, and its surrounding area now including Rio Piedras, quadrupled its former size.

San Juan (, Spanish: [saŋ ˈxwan]; Spanish for "Saint John") is the capital city and most populous municipality in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. As of the 2020 census, it is the 57th-largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States, with a population of 342,259. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico ("City of Puerto Rico", Spanish for rich port city). Puerto Rico's capital is the second oldest European-established capital city in the Americas, after Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, founded in 1496, and is the oldest European-established city under United States sovereignty. Several historical buildings are located in San Juan; among the most notable are the city's former defensive forts, Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas. Today, San Juan is Puerto Rico's most important seaport and is the island's financial, cultural, and tourism center. The population of the metropolitan statistical area, including San Juan and the municipalities of Bayamón, Guaynabo, Cataño, Canóvanas, Caguas, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Carolina and Trujillo Alto, is about 2.443 million inhabitants; thus, about 76% of the population of Puerto Rico now lives and works in this area. San Juan is also a principal city of the San Juan-Caguas-Fajardo Combined Statistical Area. The city has been the host of events within the sports community, including the 1979 Pan American Games; 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games; events of the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics; the Caribbean Series and the Special Olympics and MLB San Juan Series in 2010.

The Bombardment of San Juan, or the First Battle of San Juan, on 12 May 1898 was an engagement between United States Navy warships and the Spanish fortifications of San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was the first major action of the Puerto Rican Campaign during the Spanish–American War.

University Gardens High School (Spanish: Escuela Superior University Gardens, generally abbreviated as UGHS), formally University Gardens Community School Specialized in Science and Mathematics, is a secondary magnet school located in Hato Rey Sur, San Juan, Puerto Rico. University Gardens is run by the Puerto Rico Department of Education and is overseen by its Specialized Schools Unit (UnEE, for its initials in Spanish).University Gardens is known for its high standards, its "hard work" culture coming into the national culture. Recognized for featuring some of the highest standardized test scores in Puerto Rico, it has been criticized for having 27.8% of its student population come from living below the poverty line.

Piñero station is a railway station in San Juan, Puerto Rico located in the Hato Rey Sur district. The station is named after the Jesús T. Piñero Avenue where it is located. The station opened on December 17, 2004. It features a work of public art entitled Viandante by the artist Marnie Pérez Molière.

The Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico – or Seminario Evangélico de Puerto Rico (SEPR) in Spanish – is a private mainline Protestant seminary in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. It offers graduate studies in religion. It was founded on September 11, 1919, by a group of theological schools and biblical institutes of the Protestant denominations that came to Puerto Rico after the Spanish–American War. This seminary is currently sponsored by the American Baptist Churches USA, the Iglesia Evangélica Unida de Puerto Rico (IEUPR) (affiliated until June 10, 2006, with the United Church of Christ), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The seminary has retained its ties to the United Church of Christ even as the IEUPR has severed them. SEPR is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, the Council on Higher Education of Puerto Rico, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Universidad is a rapid transit station in San Juan agglomeration, Puerto Rico. It is located between Río Piedras and Piñero stations on the only line of the Tren Urbano system, in the Río Piedras area of the city of San Juan. The station is named after the University of Puerto Rico campus which it serves. The trial service ran in 2004, however, the regular service only started on 6 June 2005.

The Gay Pride Community Building (Spanish: Edificio Comunidad de Orgullo Gay de Puerto Rico), also known as Casa Orgullo ("Pride House"), is a historic site and former LGBT community center located in Río Piedras Pueblo (downtown Río Piedras) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.The building, a two-story reinforced concrete, Mediterranean Revival apartment house, first served as a meeting hall for the first gay/lesbian organization established in Puerto Rico, founded in 1974 as Comunidad de Orgullo Gay (Gay Pride Community). Inspired by the 1969 Stonewall Revolt, this was the first organized attempt to confront social, political and legal discrimination against the local LGBTQ community by pioneering resistance to discrimination through political action, educational programs, public awareness and social support to the community.Although Comunidad de Orgullo Gay disbanded in 1976, Casa Orgullo remains a symbol of gay rights in Puerto Rico, and it is considered a social historic site due to its importance in spearheading the gay liberation movement in the island. Forty years later, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2016.The building is not open to the public, but it hosts a mural titled Flor de Parcha which depicts passion fruit flowers and can be appreciated from the street.
