St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, Piravom, also known as Piravom Valiyapally, is a prominent church that belongs to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Hence the name "Thirumarayoor" means "place where the rotation happened". Jattayu lost his balance and rotated in the air and moved through the sky above Thirumarayoor. The club Navachetana Kala Samidhi is situated here, and promotes the cultural as well as sports activities in Thirumarayoor and its surrounding areas. The Vadam Vali (Tug of War) is conducted (yearly) by Navachethana Kala Samidhi and is considered as the best entertainment programme in Edakkattuvayal Panchayat area . A P Varkey Mission Hospital, is a general hospital owned and operated by CPIM in Arakkunnam, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. The hospital is named after the former district secretary of CPIM party, late A.P. Varkey. It was established in 2003 and was inaugurated by the Leader of opposition Kerala state assembly V.S. Achuthananthan. Hospital is located at Arakkunnam about 25 km (16 mi) from Kochi in a 25-acre (10 ha) sprawling campus. The hospital has four major blocks and the latest one was inaugurated by the Health Minister P Sankaran on 5 February 2004. The hospital has all the major departments in clinical and surgical areas.
