Princes' House

St. John's Church (German: Johanniskirche) in the north German town of Plön was built in 1685 as an independent parish church when Plön's new town, Neustadt, was developed by Duke John Adolphus. The timber-framed hall church (Saalkirche), with its three-sided polygonal end, was altered in 1861 by the installation of new windows. Further changes were made in 1910, when the interior was changed to the style of Gothic Revival.

The ducal Widow's Palace (German: Witwenpalais) in Plön in the north German state of Schleswig-Holstein was the widow's seat of the Duchess Dorothea Christina (Dorothea Christine). During its history the building has also served as an orphanage and was modified several times. Today it houses Plön's district museum.

Plön Castle (German: Plöner Schloss) in Plön is one of the largest castles in the north German state of Schleswig-Holstein and the only one located on a hill. The former Residenz of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön was built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years War and has had a colourful history in which it has, for example, been a school for military cadets and also a boarding school. The castle ended the twentieth century as a possession of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, but they could not fund its renovation and so it had to be sold again. Since January 2002 it has belonged to the Fielmann Akademie Schloss Plön and, after extensive conversion, serves as a training and qualification centre for a branch of optometry. After being inaccessible to the general public for many years when it was a boarding school, its new owners have opened it to a limited extent to visitors.

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology's Plön Evolution Path ("Plöner Evolutionspfad", German pronunciation: [ˈpløːnɐ evoluˈt͡si̯oːns pfaːt]) is an educational public works project that presents the history and evolution of life on Earth. It is one of a number of Evolution Paths in Germany. Located in Plön, Germany, the Evolution Path is composed of 11 dual-language English/German stations extending around the Großer Plöner See. The path extends 1.3 km in total, starting at the Plön Market Bridge (Schiffsanlegestelle Plön) that also serves as the start of the Plön Planet Walk, and makes its way to the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. From beginning to end, the Evolution Path describes events during evolutionary history, beginning with the origin of life (3.8 million years ago) up until the evolution of man (5 million years ago). The distance between each station is proportional to the time interval between the corresponding evolutionary periods described at that station. The exhibition was officially inaugurated on the 14th of September, 2018, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Max Planck Society.

Plön (German pronunciation: [ˈpløːn] ; Holsatian: Plöön) is the district seat of the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and has about 8,700 inhabitants. It lies right on the shores of Schleswig-Holstein's biggest lake, the Great Plön Lake, as well as on several smaller lakes, touching the town on virtually all sides. The town's landmark is Plön Castle, a chateau built in the 17th century on a hill overlooking the town. Plön has a grammar school with a 300-year history, and is home to a German Navy non-commissioned officer school and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. The town, nestled as it is in the hilly, wooded lake district of Holstein Switzerland (Holsteinische Schweiz), also has importance in the tourism industry.

The Princes' Island (German: Prinzeninsel) is a peninsula in the Großer Plöner See southwest of the town of Plön in the north German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Princes' Island was turned into a peninsula in the 19th century by the artificial lowering of the water level. It is about 2 km long and only about 30 m wide in places. At the southern end is the Niedersächsisches Bauernhaus ("Lower Saxon farmhouse") dating to the 17th century, which is now operated as a restaurant and breeds geese and moorland sheep of the Heidschnucke variety. Princes' Island is mainly forested, but some areas of the shoreline are also swampy. It is closed to motor traffic. The sons of the last German Emperor William II learned agricultural skills on the old farm which their father had purchased, while they lived in the Princes' House on the bank of the lake. The southern tip of the Prinzeninsel was a favourite spot of the last German Empress, Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein. The current owner of the island is Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia. The boats of the Großer-Plöner-See-Rundfahrt, that make round trips of the lake, land near the Niedersächsisches Bauernhaus. At the farmhouse is an inscription: melior nihil nihil homini libero dignius agricultura 1901: "Nothing is better, nothing more worthy of free people, than farming." The peninsula also has an outdoor swimming pool, which goes under the name of Prinzenbad ("Princes' pool"), because the Hohenzollern sons learnt to swim there. It has a fine sandy beach on the west side where the lake bed shelves very gently so that, 30 metres offshore, the depth is just 1.20 metres. Whilst from 1947-1963 there was a campsite and restaurant here on a very small scale, bathers are now largely on their own. In the modern buildings that have replaced the old ones, there is, inter alia, a lifeguard station of the DLRG in Plon.

The Parnass Tower (German: Parnaß-Turm) is an observation tower in the town of Plön in the North German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It sits on the summit of the low hill of Parnaß (a terminal moraine). It is a 20-metre-high, steel, lattice tower built on a stone plinth with an observation platform 20 metres above the ground (and 85 metres above sea level). The tower was erected in 1888 by the Plön Tourist Association (Plöner Verschönerungsverein). Following renovation work in 1985 it has been reopened as an observation tower. On the southern side of the stone base of the tower are three panels with: an Iron Cross with the coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein and the dates 1848 and 1849 (in memory of the First Schleswig War) a portrait relief of Emperor William I an Iron Cross with a "W" and the date 1870 (in memory of the Franco-Prussian War)From the top of the tower are views over the town of Plön and all of the surrounding countryside with its lakes.
