Murton Fell

The Warcop Training Area (WTA) is a UK Ministry of Defence military training area near the village of Warcop in Cumbria. Part of the Defence Training Estate, the area consists of approximately 24,000 acres (9,700 ha) of MoD freehold land.

Appleby Fells is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria, England, near Appleby-in-Westmorland. The area is approximately a triangle with a right angle in the North East at Cow Green Reservoir. It extends westwards to near Knock and southwards to near Helbeck. The area overlaps the North Pennines AONB. The fells rise steeply above the Eden Valley, the scarp slope being deeply dissected by streams. Natural England states that "the great importance of the area lies in its rich variety of habitats and associated plant and animal species" and that "geologically there are important exposures of the Great Whin Sill quartz dolerite". According to data from Natural England the condition of 93% of the SSSI is designated "Unfavourable Recovering" and less than 5% is "Favourable". Part of the land area designated as Appleby Fells SSSI is owned by the Ministry of Defence. The protected area includes part of Warcop Training Area.

High Cup Gill (or High Cup Nick or just High Cup), almost a geometrically perfect U-shaped chasm, is a valley deeply incised into the Pennine scarp to the northeast of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria and within the North Pennines AONB in northern England. It is considered to be glacial in origin, ice having over-ridden the area during successive ice ages. To its southeast is Murton Fell and Dufton Fell is to the north.

Murton is a small village and civil parish in Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria, England. The parish had a population of 330 in 2001, rising to 360 at the 2011 Census. Settlements within the parish include the villages of Hilton, Langton, and Brackenber as well as various small farms, houses and cottages. The town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is to the south-west.

Hilton is a village in Cumbria, England, in the civil parish of Murton, about 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Appleby-in-Westmorland and at an elevation of 752 feet (229 m). In 1870-72 the township had a population of 253. It has a rural economy, with much grazing of sheep, though the past was also home to lead mining.

Keisley is a small hamlet in the English county of Cumbria. It is located in the Dufton civil parish and the Westmorland and Furness district.

Knock Fell is a hill in Cumbria, England. It has a height of 794 m (2,605 ft) and a prominence of 50 m (160 ft), and thus is listed as a Hewitt, a Simm and a Nuttall. The summit lies in the civil parish of Long Marton, but the boundary with the parish of Dufton is only a few metres to the south. There is a cairn, named Knock Old Man, a short distance below the summit, to the south west. There is a smaller cairn on the summit. Knock Fell lies on the central watershed of England, in that it drains to the Solway Firth from its western slopes, where water of Swindale Beck and Milburn Beck flows into the River Eden, and into the North Sea from its eastern slopes, where Maize Beck and Trout Beck lead to the River Tees. The Pennine Way National Trail crosses the summit of Knock Fell, en route from Dufton to Cross Fell, the highest point of the Pennines. There is no accommodation or other services between Dufton and Garrigill, and the section has been described as ... the toughest day on the Pennine Way. It’s the longest leg, it includes the highest point and more than 3,000 feet (1,000 metres) of ascent, up to the loftiest ground in England outside the Lake District. Plus route-finding can be tricky and some sections are exposed. Knock Fell is within the Moor House-Upper Teesdale national nature reserve. Knock Hill Caverns, described as "Very confusing maze-cave", is a caving area beneath Knock Fell.

Brackenber is a hamlet in the civil parish of Murton in Cumbria, England. It is near the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and the village of Hilton, Cumbria.

Warcop railway station was situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen East. It served the village of Warcop. The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 22 January 1962. Freight traffic and the occasional troop special continued to use the line through the station (latterly serving a nearby Army camp) until at least May 1987. The station was host to camping coach from 1935 to 1939 and may have had a coach visiting in 1934 and 1935. In 1995 the Eden Valley Railway Society, now renamed the Eden Valley Railway Trust, was formed with the aim of restoring the line and reintroducing a train service. Passenger trains resumed running from Warcop in 2006 however in May 2007 an army lorry struck the railway bridge near Warcop causing the suspension of passenger services. The bridge was repaired in 2008, but too late for the 2008 season. Services recommenced in 2009. The line is upgrading the track for public service towards Appleby East railway station (Phase 1).

Flakebridge is a woodland and small hamlet in the Westmorland and Furness district, Cumbria, England, 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south-west from the village of Dufton and 1.95 kilometres (1.21 mi) east from the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The Eden Valley Railway (EVR) is a standard gauge heritage railway in Cumbria, England. It runs over a 2.2 miles (3.5 km) section of the original Eden Valley Railway in a north-westerly direction from the line's base at Warcop station. The line is run by the Eden Valley Railway Trust, formerly the Eden Valley Railway Society. The railway operates passenger trains from March to September on the weekends and Bank Holidays and some weekday workings in summer.

St Columba's Church is in the village of Warcop, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Appleby, the archdeaconry of Carlisle, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with St Theobald, Musgrave and nine other parishes to form the Heart of Eden benefice. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. On Saint Peter's Day, 29 June, each year the church hosts a rushbearing ceremony.
