Tecumseh Historic District (Tecumseh, Michigan)

Tecumseh ( tə-CUM-see) is a city in Lenawee County in the U.S. state of Michigan, near the River Raisin. Tecumseh is about 60 miles (97 km) southwest of Detroit, 25 miles (40 km) south of Ann Arbor, and 40 miles (64 km) north of Toledo, Ohio. The main street of downtown is Chicago Boulevard, also designated as M-50. It crosses the River Raisin a few miles east of M-52. As of the 2020 census, Tecumseh had a population of 8,680. The city is surrounded on three sides by Tecumseh Township, but the two are politically independent. Raisin Township borders the southern edge of the city. In 2009 the city was rated by CNNMoney as #93 among the 100 best small towns to live in.

The Tecumseh Downtown Historic District is a historic district comprising the downtown commercial area of the city of Tecumseh in Lenawee County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site on January 16, 1976, and added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 17, 1986. Settled in as early as the 1820s, the Tecumseh Downtown Historic District centers on the intersection of Evans Street and Chicago Boulevard (M-50). Evans Street contains only two contributing properties from 115 to 125 South Evans Street, while no portions of North Evans Street north of M-50 are included in the district. The majority of the district is on M-50, consisting of 102–128 West Chicago Boulevard and 101–154 East Chicago Boulevard. There are a total of 31 contributing properties and eight non-contributing properties. The two-block-long district consists primarily of two to four-story Italianate buildings dating primarily from 1850 to 1900. In 1824, Tecumseh pioneer Musgrove Evans platted the village with the intent of Chicago Boulevard (then known as the Chicago Road) to be the main thoroughfare through the village. After being settled, Tecumseh was designated as the county seat of the newly established Lenawee County. Its growth also relied heavily on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway line running through the area. Tecumseh developed rapidly as the county seat from 1826 to 1838. The government then moved to Adrian, and Tecumseh's expansion halted. Because of this lack of later development, much of the downtown area has been preserved. The railway line still runs through the center of the district but has long been in disuse.

Brookside Cemetery is a historic cemetery located along North Union Street in the city of Tecumseh in northern Lenawee County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site and added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986.

The Dr. Samuel Catlin House is a former residence located at 213 East Chicago Boulevard (M-50) in downtown Tecumseh, Michigan, United States. It was listed as a Michigan State Historic Site and added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986. It is located across the street from Saint Elizabeth's Church and down the street from (but not included in) the Tecumseh Downtown Historic District.

The George J. Kempf House is a privately owned residential house located at 212 East Kilbuck Street in Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan State Historic State and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986. It is located just around the corner from the Joseph E. Hall House.

Saint Elizabeth's Church, also known as the Old Stone Church, is a historic church located at 302 East Chicago Boulevard (M-50) in downtown Tecumseh in Lenawee County, Michigan, USA. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site on May 8, 1986, and later added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986. The building was purchased by the City of Tecumseh in 1982 and formally dedicated as the Tecumseh Area Historical Museum in 1986. It continues to serve that purpose.

The Joseph E. Hall House is a privately owned residential house located at 210 South Oneida Street in the city of Tecumseh in Lenawee County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan State Historic State and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986. It is located just around the corner from the George J. Kempf House.

Tecumseh High School is a public high school for students in grades 9-12 located in the city of Tecumseh, Michigan. The school services an area of roughly 80 square miles (210 km2) and includes the city of Tecumseh and parts of the Townships of Adrian, Clinton, Franklin, Macon, Raisin, Ridgeway, and Tecumseh. Tecumseh schools are essentially rural and seen as a middle class school system. For the 2001 school year, the Tecumseh Public School system opened the doors to a new $33 million high school. The University of Michigan, University of Toledo, Eastern Michigan University, Adrian College, Siena Heights University, Washtenaw Community College, Monroe Community College and Cleary College are all within a 35-mile (56 km) radius of the community. Jackson College a strong partner with the Tecumseh School District, offers classes both in Tecumseh and neighboring Adrian".

The Musgrove Evans House is a private residence in Tecumseh, Michigan, USA. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site on October 29, 1971, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972. It is recognized as the oldest residential structure in Lenawee County and one of the oldest in the state of Michigan.
