Gelber Berg

The Gelbe Burg ("Yellow Castle"), also called the Gelbe Bürg, is the site of a hill castle on the Gelber Berg ("Yellow Mountain", 628.4 m above sea level (NN)) northeast of the market village of Heidenheim in the Middle Franconian county of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in the German state of Bavaria. During the Migration Period there was a hilltop settlement on the Gelber Berg. Hardly anything is known of the founding of the medieval castle and the course of its history. Around 1180 the castle was owned by the bishops of Eichstätt: in a document the Eichstätt ministerialis, Chono de Woluesprunnen, was appointed to a district office (Amt) there. On the eastern side of the mountain there are still clear traces of a long abandoned early medieval fortification of the circular rampart type. A neck ditch and collapsed wall remains are still visible on the castle site. In 1448 this ruin is mentioned in the stock book (Lagerbuch) at Heidenheim Abbey.

It is situated on the river Altmühl, 19 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Weißenburg in Bayern, and 45 kilometres (28 mi) southwest of Nuremberg. Gunzenhausen is a nationally recognized recreation area. It is noted as being at one end of part of The Limes Germanicus, a Roman border wall, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen is a Landkreis (district) in the west of Bavaria, Germany with a population of 95,000. Neighbouring districts are (from the north clockwise) Ansbach, Roth, Eichstätt and Donau-Ries. It is located in the south of Middle Franconia, 50 kilometres south of Nuremberg. Largest city and the administrative center is Weißenburg in Bayern.

Gunzenhausen station is apart from Cronheim station on the Nördlingen–Gunzenhausen railway, now operated as a heritage railway, the only station in the Bavarian town of Gunzenhausen and a hub of Middle Franconia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 4 station. and has five platform tracks. The station is served by about 60 trains daily operated by Deutsche Bahn, and is served by the Treuchtlingen–Würzburg railway. The Gunzenhausen–Pleinfeld railway (also known as the Seenlandbahn or "Lakeland railway") and the Nördlingen–Gunzenhausen line, which is served by steam-hauled services on some days, also begin in Gunzenhausen.
