Palais Renaissance, or Palais (pronounced pa-lay) is a mall located at the shopping district of Orchard Road, Singapore. Located beside the Royal Thai Embassy, Palais Renaissance comprises a 13-storey office block coupled with 4 storeys of retail space. Palais Renaissance is owned and managed by property developer City Developments Limited.

Liat Towers is a shopping mall and mixed-use complex in Orchard Road, Singapore. Built in 1979, it is next to the Orchard MRT station of Singapore. It has 21 floors with offices, foodservice outlets, retail stores and embassies. The building is notable as the location of McDonald's first outlet in Singapore, which opened on October 20, 1979 , most notably also being the first ever McDonald's outlet in Southeast Asia.

Tropicana was a 4-storey mixed-use building at 9 Scotts Road in Singapore. It was developed by Shaw Sung Ching and opened in 1968. Tropicana was reportedly the country's first building to contain nightclubs, restaurants, and a theatre. In February 1989, the plot on which the building stood was purchased for S$70 million (equivalent to S$115.2 million in 2020). Tropicana officially ceased operation four months later; it was subsequently demolished and replaced by the 12-storey Pacific Plaza.

The shooting of Mohamed Taufik Zahar took place around 4:36 a.m. on 31 May 2015, near the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore where the Shangri-La Dialogue was being held; police officers fatally shot Mohamed Taufik bin Zahar, a 34-year-old logistics mover. Taufik, who was driving a red Subaru Impreza and was carrying two passengers, had encountered a roadblock set up in relation to the dialogue. When instructed to open the Subaru's boot for checks, Taufik accelerated the vehicle towards police officers, crashing through concrete barriers erected by the police, and continued driving the vehicle despite repeated warnings to stop. Anticipating threats to their safety, police officers opened fire at the vehicle and shot Taufik dead through the windscreen.After the incident, the two passengers, Mohamed bin Ismail and Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin, were convicted of drug offences and sentenced to 8 and 7 years' jail, respectively, and 3 strokes of the cane each.This is the fourth police shooting in Singapore in 15 years. Taufik's wife, Nassida Nasir, opined that death was disproportionate punishment for Taufik, but the public was generally supportive of the actions of the police. The Singapore government has also defended and commended the actions of the police officers. A coroner's inquiry into the death of Taufik was scheduled.

Orchard Road, often known colloquially as Orchard, is a major 2.5 km (1.6 mi)–long road in the Central Area of Singapore. ION Orchard (pronounced as I-On), formerly known as the Orchard Turn Development or Orchard Turn Site, is a shopping mall in Singapore, next to Orchard MRT station. It is the retail component of an integrated retail and residential development by Orchard Turn Developments Pte Ltd, a joint venture between CapitaLand and Sun Hung Kai Properties. It started operating on 21 July 2009, occupying 335 food and retail outlets. In December 2016, Forbes recognized ION Orchard as one of the top shopping malls in Singapore.The Orchard Residences, the residential component of the development, is a high-rise residential condominium. It was completed along with the shopping mall under the same developer, manager and owner in 2010. It owns a 99-year leasehold with effect from 13 March 2006.
