USS South Dakota (BB-57) was the lead vessel of the four South Dakota-class fast battleships built for the United States Navy in the 1930s. The first American battleships designed after the Washington treaty system began to break down in the mid-1930s, the South Dakotas were able to take advantage of a treaty clause that allowed them to increase the main battery to 16-inch (406 mm) guns. However, congressional refusal to authorize larger battleships kept their displacement close to the Washington limit of 35,000 long tons (36,000 t). A requirement to be armored against the same caliber of guns as they carried, combined with the displacement restriction, resulted in cramped ships. Overcrowding was exacerbated by wartime modifications that considerably strengthened their anti-aircraft batteries and significantly increased their crews. South Dakota saw extensive action during World War II; immediately upon entering service in mid-1942, she was sent to the south Pacific to reinforce Allied forces waging the Guadalcanal campaign. The ship was damaged in an accidental grounding on an uncharted reef, but after completing repairs she returned to the front, taking part in the Battle of Santa Cruz in October and the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November. During the latter action, electrical failures hampered the ability of the ship to engage Japanese warships and she became the target of numerous Japanese vessels, sustaining over two-dozen hits that significantly damaged her superstructure but did not seriously threaten her buoyancy. South Dakota returned to the United States for repairs that lasted into 1943, after which she was briefly deployed to strengthen the British Home Fleet, tasked with protecting convoys to the Soviet Union. In mid-1943, the ship was transferred back to the Pacific, where she primarily operated with the fast carrier task force, contributing her heavy anti-aircraft armament to its defense. In this capacity, she took part in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign in late 1943 and early 1944, the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign in mid-1944, and the Philippines campaign later that year. In 1945, she participated in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and bombarded Japan three times. Following the end of the war in August 1945, she took part in the initial occupation of the country before returning to the United States in September. She later moved to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, where she was laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet until 1962, when she was sold for scrap.

The Sanford International is a PGA Tour Champions event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at Minnehaha Country Club, making its debut in September 2018. The tournament is sponsored by Sanford Health. Steve Stricker won the inaugural event.

Dr. Steven's House at 21 S. Riverview Heights in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was built in 1926 for local physician George Stevens and his wife Nelle. It is located directly facing the Sioux Falls Veteran's Hospital.The Italian Renaissance architectural style home was designed by local architect Robert Perkins, of Perkins and McWayne. This particular style of architecture was popular in the United States during the late 19th century-early 20th century.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Minnehaha County, South Dakota in 2002.

Skunk Creek is a tributary of the Big Sioux River, located in the southeastern South Dakota counties of Lake, Moody, and Minnehaha. It has a confluence with the Big Sioux in the west central area of Sioux Falls.Skunk Creek was a natural habitat of skunks, hence the name.

The Presentation Children's Home is a historic building at 701 South Western Avenue in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Built to replace an earlier orphanage in Turton that burned down, it functioned not only as an orphanage—one of the few in South Dakota—but also as a school from its opening in 1940 to its closure in 1966. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

The Sioux Empire Fair is a fair held annually each summer in Sioux Falls at the W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Attendance at the 2014 fair was 280,985.The Sioux Empire Fair includes carnival rides, fair food, livestock shows, horse shows, and art competitions daily. Special themed days feature deals for senior citizens, farmers, daycares, families, and more. Among the free family entertainments are magic shows, hands-on activities, Old Mac Donald's Farm, The Pipestone Discovery Barn, music, and game vendors. Pro rodeo and local, regional, and national headline concerts are featured and are free with paid fair admission. The 76th Annual Sioux Empire Fair will be held on July 31-August 9, 2015 with the theme being Meet Me at the Fair.

Joe Foss High School is an alternative school located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In September 2015, the original building was sold to a religious group for $600,000, and the classes were moved to the former building of Axtell Park Middle School. The high school is operated alongside multiple other at-risk programs in the building, such as programs for middle school students, and suspensions from other schools in the district.

O'Gorman High School is a Catholic high school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The school was founded in 1961 and named after Thomas O'Gorman. O'Gorman is located in the Diocese of Sioux Falls.

KAUN-LD (channel 25) is a low-power television station in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States. The station is owned by Jim Simpson. KAUN-LD's transmitter is located on the campus of Sanford USD Medical Center near downtown Sioux Falls. KAUN-LD (as KAUN-LP) was an Ion Television affiliate until March 2008, when it switched to Retro TV. It later switched to Youtoo America (now YTA TV). As of February 2023, the station is not broadcasting any programming, yet it is still licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Howard Wood Field is a stadium in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, constructed in 1957. Holding 10,000 people, it is one of the premier football, soccer and track facilities in the region. Field turf was installed to replace the natural grass after a renovation project in 2003.
