Coventry Street

The London Trocadero was an entertainment complex on Coventry Street, with a rear entrance in Shaftesbury Avenue, London. It was originally built in 1896 as a restaurant, which closed in 1965. In 1984, the complex reopened as an exhibition and entertainment space. It became known for the video-game oriented SegaWorld attractions which were added in 1996, and later downscaled and renamed to "Funland" before its closure in 2011. Part of the building was opened as a hotel in 2020. The complex incorporates separate historic London buildings, including the old London Pavilion Theatre (a former venue for the Palace of Varieties), the New Private Subscription Theatre, the Royal Albion Theatre, the Argyll Subscription Rooms, the Eden Theatre and the Trocadero Restaurant. The name Trocadero indirectly derives from the Battle of Trocadero in 1823, through the Palais du Trocadéro in Paris, named after the French victory. Since at least 1919, the Trocadero has been abbreviated to the Troc or Chicarito, and under that name it appears in a poem by John Betjeman.

Fribourg & Treyer was a British snuff manufacturer and retailer. It was founded by Mr Fribourg in 1720 at 34 Haymarket, London. They were famous for retailing Turkish tobacco. The business became Fribourg & Treyer, after the German-born Gottlieb Treyer married Mrs Martha Evans whose family had already entered into the business. They sold cigars and snuff and (from at least as early as 1852) cigarettes. Up to 1820, ninety per cent of the sales was snuff and only ten per cent tobacco. It was then fashionable to keep different snuffs for different times of day, and some fastidious people kept a special room for storing them. A very fine Adam screen of about 1750, still containing much of the original glass, divides the old part of the shop from the expansion at the back. In 1912 33 Haymarket was added to the premises when Burberry's relocated.Customers included David Garrick, King George IV, and Beau Brummell.The business closed in 1981. However, 34 Haymarket is a Grade II* listed building and the intact facade still exists. Nowadays, Wilsons of Sharrow, based in Sheffield, produces snuff under the F&T brand.

The Almost Free Theatre was an alternative and fringe theatre set up by American actor and social activist E. D. Berman in 1971 in Rupert Street, Soho, London.Audiences paid what they could afford, but at least one penny. It also pioneered the lunchtime performance, which bought in a whole new audience. The theatre staged seasons, including the first season of gay plays in Britain, the first women's season, a Jewish season, an anti-nuclear season and a season to mark the 1976 American Bicentennial. There were readings of John Arden and Margaretta D'Arcy's controversial The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1976) on Irish politics. Numerous individual new plays by writers Mike Stott, Henry Livings, Michael Stevens, Wolf Mankowitz and Edward Bond were performed. Tom Stoppard developed several of his key one-act plays here, including After Magritte and Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth. His highly successful Dirty Linen and New-Found-Land went on to transfer from the Almost Free to run for four-and-a-half years at the Arts Theatre.

The Odeon Haymarket was a cinema on Haymarket, London. Three cinemas occupied the site between 1925 and 1996, predecessors being Capitol Cinema (1925–1936) and Gaumont Haymarket (1937–1959). It became the Odeon Haymarket in 1962, before closing in 1996.

Rupert Street is a street in London's Soho area, running parallel to Wardour Street and crossing Shaftesbury Avenue. Rupert Street is first mentioned in records in 1677, and named for Prince Rupert of the Rhine.The northern part of Rupert Street is part of Soho's gay village. A small alleyway, Rupert Court, links Rupert Street to Wardour Street in this area. At the northern end of Rupert Street, Rupert Street meets Brewer Street, and is continued by Walker's Court. The southern part of Rupert Street is part of Soho's Chinatown area.

The Horses of Helios, also known as The Four Bronze Horses of Helios, is a bronze sculpture of four horses by Rudy Weller. It is one half of a commission installed in 1992 when the adjacent Criterion Theatre was refurbished. The other half, the Daughters of Helios or Three Graces, is a sculpture of three women leaping off the building six stories above. The Horses of Helios comprises three bronze elements with dark patina: one pair of horses weighing approximately 4 tons, and two single horses. The four rearing horses appear to be bursting from the water of a fountain. It depicts Aethon, Eous, Phlegon, and Pyrois - the four horses of Helios, Greek god of the sun.The sculpture was installed in 1991 in a fountain under a canopy at the base of the building at 1 Jermyn Street, on the corner where Piccadilly meets Haymarket, near Piccadilly Circus in London. The building is adjacent to the Criterion Theatre, and was installed when the theatre was refurbished. The Daughters of Helios or Three Graces depicts the three Charites - Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia - who in some accounts are the daughters of Helios and the naiad Aegle. The three female figures are made from gold-leaf-covered aluminium. They are installed at roof level, as if leaping off the 6th floor of the building immediately above the horses below.

Tiger Tiger is a chain of British nightclubs which is owned by Novus Leisure. The chain has five branches located in Cardiff, Portsmouth, Manchester, Newcastle and two venues in London. Each branch has several bars, a restaurant and several dance floors, and its own unique décor.The chain had another branch in Leeds, but on 22 September 2018, Tiger Tiger announced on their official Facebook page that the branch would close the following day. The chain’s flagship branch, and the first to open (in December 1998), is on Haymarket in Central London. It is also the largest branch, with four floors covering some 18,000 sq ft (1,700 m2) of floor space. Tiger Tiger London has one restaurant, four large dance floors and five bars. Each dance floor plays different types of music. It was outside this club on 29 June 2007 that the first of two unsuccessful car bombs was discovered and made safe.

The Café de Paris was a London nightclub, located in the West End, beside Leicester Square on Coventry Street, Piccadilly. Opened in 1924, it became one of the leading theatre clubs in London. After being hit by a German bomb in 1941, when at least 34 people were killed and around 80 injured, it was closed until 1948. In December 2020 the club closed down permanently due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom.

The Prince of Wales Theatre is a West End theatre in Coventry Street, near Leicester Square in London. It was established in 1884 and rebuilt in 1937, and extensively refurbished in 2004 by Sir Cameron Mackintosh, its current owner. The theatre should not be confused with the former Scala Theatre in London that was known as the Prince of Wales Royal Theatre or Prince of Wales's Theatre from 1865 until its demolition in 1903.

SegaWorld London was an indoor theme park located inside the London Trocadero in London, England. The venue opened up in September 1996 and operated as a joint-venture between Chorion, the owners of the Trocadero, and Sega. At 110,000 square feet, it was claimed to be the largest indoor theme park in the world. It was Sega's flagship venue in Europe and the first Sega theme park outside of Japan. The venue struggled with attendance which led to an early exit from Sega in the joint-venture, leading to its owners renting the space to the owners of the nearby Funland arcade which merged together with its existing branch nearby, and remained as such until its permanent closure in 2011.
