The 2002 WGC-World Cup took place 12–15 December at the Vista Vallarta Club de Golf, Nicklaus Course in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was the 48th World Cup and the third as a World Golf Championship event. 24 countries competed and each country sent two players. The prize money totaled $3,000,000 with $1,000,000 going to the winning pair. The Japanese team of Toshimitsu Izawa and Shigeki Maruyama won. They won by two strokes stroke over the American team of Phil Mickelson and David Toms.

Marina Vallarta has galleries and shops, hotels, and shopping centres, including Plaza Marina (which has the grocery store Comercial Mexicana) and Plaza Neptune at the marina's northwest end. The marina can house 350-450 boats. Restaurants in the area have included Nikki Beach, Tribu, and Victor's Place. A golf course is just north of Marina Vallarta.

The Ameca River (Spanish: Río Ameca) is a river of some 230 km (140 mi) in length in western Mexico. It originates in the Bosque de la Primavera in Jalisco, 23 km to the west of state capital Guadalajara; flows through the city of Ameca; and then forms the boundary between Jalisco and Nayarit on its way to the Pacific Ocean, where it drains into the Bahía de Banderas at Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Its main tributaries are the Ahuacatlán and Amatlán de Cañas. The Ameca has been dammed just north of the town of La Vega, Jalisco, forming a reservoir, the Lago La Vega which extends northward to the town of Teuchitlán.
