The Majestic Hotel (formerly Hotel Majestic) located at Schneider Square in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England is a 3-star Grade II listed hotel constructed in 1904. The building was designed by JY McIntosh and contains elements of Edwardian and Jacobean architecture. It is also noted for its striking rounded Flemish gables. £1.7 million was spent on refurbishing the hotel in 2008 by developers One Leisure, although ownership of the Majestic, and its nearby sister hotel the Imperial, have since been transferred. The majority of the building's ground floor level is occupied by an Italian restaurant named Francesca's.

Barrow-in-Furness Town Hall is a Gothic Revival style municipal building in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The building, which serves as the base of Barrow Borough Council, lies within a Conservation Area with Grade II* listed status.

Schneider Square is a square located at the intersection of Duke Street, Dalton Road, Michaelson Road, Burlington Street and Fisher's Yard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Schneider Square has changed little since its construction in the mid-19th century and now lies within a conservation area. Named after Henry Schneider who played a major role in the development of Barrow, there is a statue commemorating the industrialist in the centre of the square. Located on, or immediately adjacent to Schneider Square are Barrow Town Hall, Craven House, former Barrow Higher Grade School, Hotel Majestic, Burlington House and Duke Street Surgery.

Barrow-in-Furness is a port town in Cumbria, England. Historically in Lancashire, it was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1867 and merged with Dalton-in-Furness Urban District in 1974 to form the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. At the tip of the Furness peninsula, close to the Lake District, it is bordered by Morecambe Bay, the Duddon Estuary and the Irish Sea. In 2011, Barrow's population was 56,745, making it the second largest urban area in Cumbria after Carlisle. Natives of Barrow, as well as the local dialect, are known as Barrovian.In the Middle Ages, Barrow was a small hamlet within the parish of Dalton-in-Furness with Furness Abbey, now on the outskirts of the town, controlling the local economy before its dissolution in 1537. The iron prospector Henry Schneider arrived in Furness in 1839 and, with other investors, opened the Furness Railway in 1846 to transport iron ore and slate from local mines to the coast. Further hematite deposits were discovered, of sufficient size to develop factories for smelting and exporting steel. For a period of the late 19th century, the Barrow Hematite Steel Company-owned steelworks was the world's largest.Barrow's location and the availability of steel allowed the town to develop into a significant producer of naval vessels, a shift that was accelerated during World War I and the local yard's specialisation in submarines. The original iron- and steel-making enterprises closed down after World War II, leaving Vickers shipyard as Barrow's main industry and employer. Several Royal Navy flagships, the vast majority of its nuclear submarines as well as numerous other naval vessels, ocean liners and oil tankers have been manufactured at the facility. The end of the Cold War and subsequent decrease in military spending saw high unemployment in the town through lack of contracts; despite this, the BAE Systems shipyard remains operational as the UK's largest by workforce (9,500 employees in 2020) and is now undergoing a major expansion associated with the Dreadnought-class submarine programme. Today Barrow is also a hub for energy generation and handling. Offshore wind farms form one of the highest concentrations of turbines in the world, including the second largest offshore farm, with multiple operating bases in Barrow.

The 2002 Barrow-in-Furness Legionnaires' disease outbreak was a fatal outbreak of Legionellosis which occurred in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It was and still remains among the worst such outbreaks in history. The first fatality occurred on 2 August 2002. The source of the bacteria was later found to be from steam coming out of a badly maintained air conditioning unit. The system was located in the council-run arts centre Forum 28, with the vent emitting the disease over a busy alleyway in the town centre. Ultimately seven people died and 172 cases were reported (a case fatality rate of around 4%), ranking as the second worst in British history and seventh worst globally by death count.The coroner for Furness and South Cumbria criticised the council for its failings with regard to health and safety at the conclusion of an inquest into the seven deaths. In 2006, council employee Gillian Beckingham and employer Barrow Borough Council were cleared of seven charges of manslaughter. Beckingham, the council senior architect, was fined £15,000 and the authority £125,000. The authority maintained that Beckingham was not responsible for the building or the defective plant and dismissed the building Technical Manager Kevin Borthwick. He was later re-instated to his position following a challenge by his union. The borough council was the first public body in the country to have faced corporate manslaughter charges. Beckingham maintained that a contract to maintain the plant was in place but failings of others meant that the work was never undertaken, nor was the lack of adequate maintenance pursued by those responsible for the building. Following the trials, the contractor responsible for maintaining the defective plant, Interserve, settled a £1.5 million claim by the Council for damages.

The Forum (formerly Forum 28) is a theatre, media and arts centre located in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The complex is currently home to a large theatre and stage, several conference and function rooms, Barrow's main tourist information centre and a Costa Coffee outlet. The Forum is situated in Central Barrow, opposite the town hall and perhaps is most famous for being the source of one of the world's worst Legionaires outbreaks in 2002. The Forum is one of the area's main cultural and art centres and has hosted many musical artists, comedians and other performers, as well as hosting such events as the local multicultural festival and various career conventions. Many local and international theatre groups have used the Forum for their productions, plays and pantomimes.

Furness Building Society is a British building society, which has its headquarters in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Established in 1865, it is the 17th largest in the United Kingdom based on total assets of £813 million as at 31 December 2010. It is a member of the Building Societies Association. The Society expanded its call centre in 2009 to deal with investments and insurance queries. The Society has two wholly-owned subsidiary companies: Furness Mortgage Services Ltd and Furness Independent Financial Advisers. In 2017, Chris Harrison was appointed as the CEO of Furness Building Society.

Princess Selandia was a Danish train ferry which had a long career on the Great Belt and the Baltic Sea, after which she became a restaurant and nightclub ship, at one time moored in Barrow-in-Furness, England. Built for DSB, the Danish State Railway, she began service as Dronning Ingrid (Queen Ingred) on the Korsør – Nyborg route in April 1951. She subsequently operated on several Danish inter-island and Denmark-Germany routes. In August 1979 she was renamed Sjælland, although portraits of the Danish Royal Family remained in the state cabin on board. For a time she plied between Malmö, Sweden and Copenhagen. In 1985 she was rented out to Danish Radio and TV as a studio and used as the setting for Danish TV show "Kajplads 114" (Berth 114) in Copenhagen.In 1988 she became a museum and restaurant ship and was sold to English interests in April 2002, being moved to Tilbury, England and renamed Selandia. Following purchase by Rick Lucas in June 2004, she was sailed from Tilbury to Barrow-in-Furness for a £2 million, nine-month refurbishment and renamed Princess Selandia. The whole freight deck, which once carried trains, was converted to "The Blue Lagoon" - a 2,500-capacity nightclub. The night club operated from Town Quay, Buccleuch Dock, Barrow-in-Furness until 16 August 2010. She also had an a la carte restaurant, casino and beer garden. On 9 October 2010 a fire started aboard the Princess Selandia. On 14 July 2015 she left Barrow-in-Furness for Frederikshavn, Denmark, for scrapping.

The Port of Barrow refers to the enclosed dock system within the town of Barrow-in-Furness, England. Morecambe Bay is to the east of the port and the Irish Sea surrounds it to the south and west. The port is currently owned and operated by Associated British Ports Holdings, but some land is shared with BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. Currently consisting of four large docks, the Port of Barrow is one of North West England's most important ports. The docks are as follows: Buccleuch Dock, Cavendish Dock, Devonshire Dock and Ramsden Dock. The port of Barrow is the only deep water port between the Mersey and the Clyde.Barrow shipyard is one of the largest in the United Kingdom (it has built well over 800 vessels in its history), rivalled only by those in Belfast, Birkenhead and Govan. It is also home to the country's only submarine production facility. The port is heavily involved with the transportation of natural gases and other forms of energy from local sites such as Sellafield, Barrow Offshore Windfarm, Ormonde Wind Farm, Rampside Gas Terminal and Roosecote Power Station. Barrow is also becoming increasingly popular as a port of call for cruise liners visiting the town and the Lake District. James Fisher & Sons are the main company to operate out of the port.

Michaelson Road Bridge is a road bridge connecting Central Barrow to Barrow Island in south Cumbria, England. The original high-level bridge was a swing bridge and then replaced by a pair of lift and roll bridges constructed between 1800 and 1884 then superseded by a more modern pair of bascule bridges in the mid 1960s. It was built at a time when Barrow Island was actually an island and there was strong call for road access between mainland Barrow at the shipyard on Barrow Island. Traffic on the bridge was soon relieved when an old Victorian dock was filled in and space was created for the huge Devonshire Dock Hall complex, traffic now runs along the north side of the building on the A590. Trams formerly operated across the bridge, but now it solely used for vehicles and pedestrians. A second Devonshire Dock footbridge is planned in the multimillion-pound Waterfront Barrow-in-Furness development.

Portland Walk is a shopping centre in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Constructed in 1998 on the site of the former Forshaw Street, it was designed as a modern extension to Dalton Road; Barrow's principal shopping district. Barrow Indoor Market is also located adjacent to the southern entrance of the centre. Portland Walk has a total retail floor area of around 200,000 sq ft (19,000 m2) and contains over 30 stores and services. The complex is entirely open-air, however, there has been unsuccessful proposals to cover it with a roof. A 500-space multi-storey car park provides direct access to the centre. National retailers with a presence in Portland Walk are Boots, British Heart Foundation, Card Factory, Clarks, Clintons Cards, EE, Game, Goldsmiths, JD Sports New Look and Sports Direct.

The Imperial Hotel (formerly Hotel Imperial) located on Cornwallis Street in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England is a 4-star Grade II listed hotel built in 1875. The iconic five storey building was designed by architect Thomas Bennet and, like many Barrow buildings, constructed of red brick and sandstone. Other notable features of the building are the balcony located directly above the main entrance and the two decorative lamps standing in front of the hotel, which are also Grade II listed.The hotel underwent a £1 million renovation in 2012 by businessman Stuart Bowes, owner of the nearby Majestic Hotel. It now contains 49 rooms, a rooftop terrace and the Aspire cocktail lounge.
