Ceiriog Valley

Pandy () is a hamlet in the Ceiriog Valley, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is located on the confluence of the River Ceiriog to the east, and the smaller River Teirw flowing from Nantyr moors to the north-west. The river level at Pandy of the River Ceiriog is ~665 feet (203 m), downstream from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, and upstream from Glyn Ceiriog.Pandy means "fulling mill" in Welsh. The hamlet is home to a fulling mill thought to be the oldest fulling mill in Wales, dating to 1365, which was later converted into a pub known as the Woolpack Inn, also providing visitor accommodation, and until 2016, was home to the Pandy Mill Gallery, dedicated to glass art. Minerals were also extracted from the local Pandy area, including silica, dolerite, and China stone. Craig y Pandy (the Pandy crags) composed of Volcanic tuff overlooks the hamlet. The Glyn Valley Tramway used to pass the hamlet and was the main transport link of the hamlet, since superseded by the B4500 road which passes through the hamlet.In November 2020, during a 17-day lockdown concerning the COVID-19 pandemic in Wales, the hamlet experienced very low broadband speeds with costs the expand fibre broadband considered expensive at the time.

The Cambrian quarry was a slate quarry, located to the west of Glyn Ceiriog in Denbighshire, North Wales. There was some small-scale extraction of slate from the 17th century, but commercial extraction began in 1857, and the scale of operation increased from 1873, when the Glyn Valley Tramway opened, providing an easier route to market for the output of the quarry. Production after 1938 was on a reduced scale, and the quarry closed in the winter of 1946/47, mainly due to a lack of workers.

Glyn Ceiriog (Welsh: Glynceiriog) is the principal settlement of the Ceiriog Valley and a community in Wrexham County Borough, north-east Wales. Glyn Ceiriog translates simply as Ceiriog Valley, though there are other villages in the valley. The village and community is technically known, in traditional Welsh naming style, as Llansantffraid Glyn Ceiriog or sometimes Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, which means church of St Ffraid (the Welsh name of Saint Brigid of Kildare) in the Ceiriog Valley, but it has come to be known simply as Glyn Ceiriog, or even Glyn for short. The name Llansanffraid is now more associated with other villages of the same name. It is in the Clwyd South Senedd constituency and Clwyd South UK parliamentary constituency. A former slate mining village, it lies on the River Ceiriog and on the B4500 road, about 6 miles (10 km) west of Chirk. It is south of Llangollen.

Tregeiriog (a Welsh name translating roughly as "settlement [on the] River Ceiriog") is a village in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is in the community of Ceiriog Ucha on the B4500 road between Glyn Ceiriog and Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog. The Battle of Crogen, between Welsh forces under Owain Gwynedd and English forces under Henry II of England, took place near Tregeirog in 1165. Richard Jones Berwyn (1838–1917), one of the founders of the Welsh settlement in Patagonia, was a native of the village. Tregeiriog was formerly in the old ecclesiastical parish of Llangadwaladr, of which it was a detached township, surrounded by other parishes. The village of Tregeiriog and the surrounding area were transferred to the parish of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog in the late 1980s. Although the village had no church, there was formerly a small Calvinistic Methodist chapel in Tregeiriog. Tregeiriog was also in the corresponding civil parish of Llangadwaladr; subsequent to the 1972 Local Government Act it was placed in the community of Ceiriog Ucha. The cartographer Samuel Lewis, in his 1849 edition of A Topographical Dictionary of Wales, recorded that "the inhabitants have a tradition, that there were formerly a church and a considerable town at Tregeiriog; and in ploughing the land, quantities of large paving stones have been thrown up at different times, which seemed to have been placed in regular order: the name of a farm, Pen-yr-hôwl, the "head of the street," is also adduced in corroboration".

Llwynmawr (Welsh: Llwyn-mawr) is a village in the Ceiriog Valley in North Wales, about halfway between the villages of Glyn Ceiriog and Pontfadog, in the community of Glyntraian. The name means "big grove".

The Glyn Valley Tramway was a narrow gauge railway that ran through the Ceiriog Valley in north-east Wales, connecting Chirk with Glyn Ceiriog in Denbighshire (now Wrexham County Borough). The gauge of the line was 2 feet 4+1⁄4 inches (718 mm) while it was horse-drawn, which was unofficially increased to 2 ft 4+1⁄2 in (724 mm) when steam locomotives were introduced. The total length of the line was 8+1⁄4 miles (13.3 km), 6+1⁄2 miles (10.5 km) of which were worked by passenger trains, the remainder serving a large granite quarry and several minor slate quarries.

The Llangollen Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Llangollen) is a volunteer-run heritage railway in Denbighshire, North Wales, which operates between Llangollen and Corwen. The standard gauge line, which is 10 miles (16 km) long, runs on part of the former Ruabon – Barmouth GWR route that closed in 1965. It operates daily services in the summer as well as weekends throughout the winter months, using a variety of mainly ex-GWR steam locomotives as well as several diesel engines and diesel multiple units. A 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) extension of the railway has been built to complete the line to Corwen.In March 2021 the railway company announced that, having made a loss in three consecutive years, they had invited their bank to appoint receivers. Operation of the railway was handed over to the Llangollen Railway Trust, and the line reopened July 2021.

Glyntraian (Welsh: Glyntraean) is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The parish of Glyntraian, lying at the mouth of the Ceiriog Valley, was formed when the ancient parish of Llangollen was divided into three traeanau ("traean/traian" being the Welsh for "third"): Llangollen Traean, Trefor Traean, and Glyn Traean - which became known as Glyntraian. It contained the historic townships of Cilcochwyn, Crogeniddon, Crogenwladus, Erwallo, Hafodgynfor, Nantygwryd, Pennant and Talygarth. Today, Glyntraian contains the villages of Dolywern, Llechrydau, Llwynmawr and Pontfadog; it is governed by Glyntraian Community Council (Welsh: Cyngor Cymuned Glyntraean), which replaced Glyntraian Parish Council under the Local Government Act 1972. At the 2001 Census, the community area had a total population of 878, falling to 822 at the 2011 Census.

The Pontfadog Oak was a sessile oak tree (Quercus petraea) that stood on Cilcochwyn farm above the village of Pontfadog, in the Ceiriog Valley west of Chirk in the county borough of Wrexham, Wales, until it was blown over in the early hours of 18 April 2013. At the time it was reputed to be the oldest and largest oak tree in the United Kingdom.Known as "Wales's national tree", its girth was over 16 metres (53 ft) in 1881.In 1996 using Forestry Commission techniques, its age was estimated as between 1,181 and 1,628 years.

Pontfadog is a village in the Ceiriog Valley west of Chirk in Wrexham County Borough, Wales; it is part of the community of Glyntraian. Like the neighbouring village of Glyn Ceiriog, the growth of Pontfadog is connected to the area's former quarrying industry. The village's name translates as "Bridge of Madoc", taking its name from a bridge over the River Ceiriog. Until April 2013, an oak tree stood near the village. Entitled the Pontfadog Oak, the tree reputed to be the oldest in the United Kingdom at the time; however, strong winds on the 17 April 2013 caused the tree to topple overnight.The Glyn Valley Tramway had a station in the village, which has now been preserved by the Glyn Valley Tramway Group. In addition to the Swan Inn, the village's pub, there is also a village shop with a post office counter.

Ceiriog Ucha, also spelled as Ceiriog Uchaf (meaning "Upper Ceiriog"), is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The community lies in the Ceiriog Valley and comprises the villages of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Tregeiriog as well as surrounding farmland and grouse and pheasant moors. It is a rural district set in low hills. The area is governed by Ceiriog Uchaf Community Council, and had a total population of 346, in 129 households, at the 2001 census. reducing to 317 in 2011.

Plas Newydd (, Welsh pronunciation: [ˈplaːs ˈnɛu̯ɨð]; "new hall" or "new mansion") is a historic house in the town of Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales, and was the home of the Ladies of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, for nearly 50 years. Today, it is run as a museum by Denbighshire County Council.
