Lake Carroll (Illinois)

Lake Carroll is a census-designated place (CDP) in Carroll County, Illinois, United States, surrounding a lake of the same name. It is in northeastern Carroll County and is bordered to the north by Stephenson County. It is 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Mount Carroll, the county seat, and 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Freeport. Lake Carroll was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. As of the 2020 census, the population was 852.

Freedom Township is one of twelve townships in Carroll County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2020 census, its population was 799 and it contained 920 housing units.

Jefferson Township is located in Stephenson County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 268 and it contained 117 housing units.

Loran is an unincorporated community in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. Loran is home to the Salem UCC Church and Cemetery.

Berreman Township is one of twenty-three townships in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 147 and it contained 73 housing units. It was formed from Pleasant Valley Township on February 14, 1857.

Ashdale Junction is a former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad station and junction in Carroll County, Illinois, United States. Ashdale Junction is located along the Milwaukee Road railroad line east of Mount Carroll. Ashdale Junction marks the former site of the junction between the main line of the Milwaukee Road and the "Ashdale cutoff," which allowed some trains to bypass the yard and steep grade at Savanna, rejoining the main line at Ebner. The 15-mile cutoff, running along Johnson Creek, was built by the "Ashdale and Thomson Railroad" (a subsidiary of the Milwaukee Road) in 1902, and began carrying trains such as the Southwest Limited in 1903.: 43  It was part of a larger bypass project running across Iowa, called the "Kansas City Cutoff.": 161  The Ashdale cutoff was abandoned in 1952.There was no terminal at Ashdale, but passenger trains stopped there at least as late as 1912; it was the only stop between Lanark and Mount Carroll.

Loran Township is located in Stephenson County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,442 and it contained 575 housing units.

The St. Vrain massacre was an incident in the Black Hawk War. It occurred near present-day Pearl City, Illinois, in Kellogg's Grove, on May 24, 1832. The massacre was most likely committed by Ho-Chunk warriors who were unaffiliated with Black Hawk's band of warriors. It is also unlikely that the group of Ho-Chunk had the sanction of their nation. Killed in the massacre were United States Indian Agent Felix St. Vrain and three of his companions. Some accounts reported that St. Vrain's body was mutilated. St. Vrain and his party were attacked while en route from Dixon's Ferry, Illinois (now Dixon) to Galena, Illinois. St. Vrain had been ordered by General Henry Atkinson to deliver dispatches to Fort Armstrong. Colonel Henry Dodge's men interred the remains of St. Vrain and his companions after the massacre.

Pearl City High School, is located in the town of Pearl City, Illinois. The campus is located 12 miles west of Freeport and 44 miles west of Rockford. It is located just six miles south of U.S. Route 20, a major east–west highway connected to Interstate 90.

Pearl City is an incorporated village in Stephenson County, Illinois, with a population of 838 at the 2010 census, up from 780 in 2000.

The Nathaniel Halderman House is a historic house located at 728 East Washington Street in Mount Carroll, Illinois. The house was built in 1854 for Nathaniel Halderman, an early settler of Carroll County. Halderman came to the county in 1841; he partnered with other early settlers to plat Mount Carroll and build the town's first mill. He was the city's first mayor and later Carroll County's treasurer. Jacob Emmert, one of Halderman's business partners, built the Italianate house using brick from the city's brickyard. The house's design features an open porch along the front, a cornice with paired brackets, and a cupola atop the roof.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 24, 1980.
