Southwaite

Southwaite railway station in Hesket parish, was situated on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (the West Coast Main Line) between Carlisle and Penrith. It served the village of Southwaite, Cumbria, England. The station opened in 1846, and closed on 7 April 1952.

Southwaite services is a motorway service station, between junctions 41 and 42 of the M6 motorway near Southwaite, Cumbria, England. It is about 7 miles (11 km) south of Carlisle, within the civil parish of Hesket It is operated by Moto (it was owned and operated by Esso when the northbound base opened in 1972). A southbound base was added in 1977. Esso later sold the services to Granada. For a time in the 1990s the service area was briefly renamed Carlisle. Southwaite has entrances from both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the motorway, and there are facilities built on both sides. A pedestrian footbridge connects the two sections of the service area. Both sides have a Burger King restaurant, WHSmith, M&S Simply Food and a Costa Coffee. The south side also has a Travelodge.

Low Hesket is a village in the English county of Cumbria but was traditionally in the historic county of Cumberland. Low Hesket is on the A6 road 8+1⁄2 miles (13.7 km) south of Carlisle. This is a former Roman road, and a milestone from that era has been discovered there inscribed IMP C FL VAL CONSTANTINO P F INV AVG, which expands to Imperator Caesar Flavius Valerius Constantinus Pius Felix Invictus Augustus, dating it from the time of emperor Constantine I, who ruled from 307 to 337.

Wreay railway station in St Cuthbert Without parish, was situated on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (the West Coast Main Line) between Carlisle and Penrith. It served the village of Wreay, Cumbria, England. The station opened in 1853, and closed on 16 August 1943.

High Hesket is a village near the A6 road, in the parish of Hesket, in the Westmorland and Furness district, traditionally in the historic county of Cumberland but now in the ceremonial county of Cumbria. The village was on the A6 road until it was by-passed.

Wreay ( REE-ə) is a small English village that lies on the River Petteril in today's Cumbria. The M6 motorway, A6 trunk road and West Coast Main Line railway all skirt the village.

St Mary's Church, Wreay is the Church of England parish church of Wreay in Cumbria. It was designed by Sara Losh in about 1835 and built between 1840 and 1842. It is notable as the earliest known example in Britain of a revival of Lombard architecture. It is a Grade II* listed building. Prominent in the churchyard are a mausoleum of Sara Losh's sister, Katharine, and a copy of the Bewcastle Cross.

Aiketgate is a small village in the English county of Cumbria. It is within the civil parish of Hesket. Development of wind turbines in the Eden Valley has drawn attention to Aiketgate. A company called Harmony Energy Ltd. has plans to erect a 77-metre-high (253 ft) mast at Barrock End Farm in Aiketgate. These plans are opposed by the campaign group- NO2AWT.

Morton is a hamlet near the village of Calthwaite, in the civil parishes of Hesket and Skelton, within the Westmorland and Furness district of the English county of Cumbria.

Ivegill is a small village in Cumbria, England. The village has one place of worship and a school. It is located on an unclassified road near Southwaite services which is on the M6 motorway. It takes its name from the River Ive which flows through the centre of the village. Nearby settlements include the villages of Southwaite, Low Braithwaite, Middlesceugh and Highbridge.

Calthwaite is a small village in rural Cumbria, England, situated between the small market town of Penrith and the larger city of Carlisle. It is within of the civil parish of Hesket and the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, but historically part of the traditional county of Cumberland. It has a population of around 100 people. In 1870-72 the township had a population of 269 and a railway station. The village contains a primary school, a Church of England Church, a pre-school nursery and a pub called the Globe Inn. The school has around 68 pupils, and 3 teachers. There are three classes, Class 1 consisting of reception and year 1, Class 2 consisting of Year 2 & Year 3 and Class 3 which is years 4-6. The Head Teacher is Mr. Harvey. Calthwaite Hall dates back to 1837 and has been run as a holiday and wedding venue. Two miles south-east of the village, Brackenburgh Old Tower is a late 14th or early 15th century pele tower adjoining a large 19th-century house at Brackenburgh Hall.

Calthwaite Hall, near Penrith in Cumbria, England, is a house of historical significance and is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. It was built in 1837 for Thomas Dixon Esq and was the home of many notable people for the next 150 years. It is now a venue for weddings and other special events and also provides accommodation.
