Schaghticoke, New York

Schaghticoke is a village in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. During the colonial period of 1640-1750, this area was occupied by a mixed group of Native Americans — Mohicans, who were local, and remnants of numerous New England tribes who had migrated west away from European encroachment and warfare. The Village of Schaghticoke is in the Town of Schaghticoke, near the eastern town line. Schaghticoke is west of the Village of Valley Falls.

Schaghticoke Powder Company was a powder mill located in Rensselaer County, New York in the village of Schaghticoke. The powder mill was founded by Josiah Masters and Nicholas Masters in 1813 for the supply of gunpowder during the War of 1812. The Schaghticoke Powder Works was located on the south banks of the Hoosick River approximately a half mile southeast of the Schaghticoke village. The powder works was established on one hundred acres and developed with twenty separate buildings processing special grades of gunpowder. The Schaghticoke Powder Works manufactured sixty thousand powder kegs or one million and five thousand pounds of powder per year. By 1893, the Schaghticoke Works mill was recognize as one of the oldest gunpowder mills in the United States manufacturing various propellant grades for eighty years in the Hudson River Valley.

Melrose is a hamlet of the Town of Schaghticoke, in Rensselaer County, New York, located approximately five miles north of Troy, and about six miles east of Mechanicville. It is about 30 minutes from Albany, 20 minutes from Clifton Park, and 10 minutes from Troy. The community is centered on State Route 40. The Auclair–Button Farmstead and Cartin–Snyder–Overacker Farmstead were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Knickerbocker Mansion is a historic home located at Schaghticoke in Rensselaer County, New York. The property was occupied by the Knickerbocker family for nearly 250 years, from about 1707 until 1946. The mansion was built by Johannes Knickerbacker III around 1770. It was acquired in 1964 by the Knickerbocker Historical Society and is operated as a local history museum. The Knickerbocker Historical Society (KHS) have almost entirely restored the mansion. The Knickerbocker Mansion grounds were the location of the “Witenagemot Oak,” planted in 1676 to commemorate the signing of a treaty between New York governor Edmund Andros and the local Mahican people and native refugees from King Philip's War. The oak stood until 1948.The house was built about 1770 and is a 2+1⁄2-story, rectangular brick building. It has a hipped roof, covered in slate, that curves slightly at the eaves. The front facade once featured a one-bay, pedimented entrance portico. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Grant Hollow is a hamlet in Rensselaer County, in the U.S. state of New York.The community took its name from the Grant-Ferris Company, manufacturers of agricultural equipment. The name is sometimes spelled with the apostrophe, "Grant's Hollow".

Halford–Hayner Farmstead is a historic home and farm located near Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. The farmhouse was built between about 1835 and 1850, and consists of a 1+1⁄2-story, five-bay, frame main block with a later two-story rear ell. Also on the property are the contributing shed (c. 1900), ice house (c. 1900), main barn group (c. 1800–1815, c. 1820–1840, c. 1870), wagon / tool barn (c. 1830-1850), hay barn (c. 1870-1900), and shop / garage (c. 1915).: 3–5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

The Hoosic River, also known as the Hoosac, the Hoosick (primarily in New York) and the Hoosuck (mostly archaic), is a 76.3-mile-long (122.8 km) tributary of the Hudson River in the northeastern United States. The different spellings are the result of varying transliterations of the river's original Algonquian name. It can be translated either as "the beyond place" (as in beyond, or east of, the Hudson) or as "the stony place" (perhaps because the river's stony bottom is usually exposed except in spring, or perhaps because local soils are so stony).

HVDC Mechanicville–Schenectady was the first experimental HVDC transmission line in the United States. Built in 1932, the circuit traversed 37 kilometres (23 mi) from Mechanicville, New York to Schenectady, New York. The system used mercury arc rectifiers at a voltage of 20,000 volts and a rated power of 5 MW. The facility was dismantled after World War II.

Mechanicville Hydroelectric Plant is a 18.3-acre (7.4 ha) national historic district located at Mechanicville in Saratoga County, New York. The listing included one contributing building and three contributing structures. The district dates to 1897 and includes notable Queen Anne architecture.The district includes the powerhouse, an earth embankment, a concrete non-overflow dam, and a 700-foot-long concrete gravity overflow dam. They were built in 1897–1898 by the Hudson River Power Transmission Company and span the western channel of the Hudson River between the Saratoga County shore and Bluff Island.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.The station was designed to produce 5000 kilowatts from seven hydraulic turbine-generator units. Extensive renovations starting in 2003 have turned the plant into a working museum. In 2021, the plant started mining bitcoin with a portion of the hydro-power energy. Because running a plant that still uses all of the original 1800s machinery, mining bitcoin has been three times more profitable than selling electricity back to the national grid.

Stillwater Bridge is a truss bridge in the Capital District of New York in the United States. It carries Stillwater Bridge Road (New York State Route 915C or NY 915C, an unsigned reference route) across the Hudson River from the village of Stillwater in Saratoga County to the town of Schaghticoke in Rensselaer County. The bridge is two lanes wide and has a sidewalk only along the south side of the road. Stillwater Bridge begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 4 and NY 32 in Stillwater. From here, it heads southeast across the Hudson River to Stillwater Island, an island in Schaghticoke bounded by the river to the west and the Champlain Canal to the east. On Stillwater Island, Stillwater Bridge Road serves Lock 4 State Canal Park at the mouth of the Hoosic River and changes designations from NY 915C to County Route 125. A smaller truss bridge brings Stillwater Bridge Road across the Champlain Canal and onto the mainland of the town of Schaghticoke. The bridge carried NY 67 across the Hudson River until 1980, when NY 67 was realigned to cross the river at Mechanicville 3 miles (4.8 km) to the south.

Stillwater is a village in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,738 at the 2010 census. There is a hamlet in Minerva, Essex County with the same name, which has nothing to do with this village. The Village of Stillwater is in the southeastern part of the Town of Stillwater, north of the City of Mechanicville.

Stillwater United Church, formerly known as Second Baptist Church, is a historic church at 135 Hudson Avenue in Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York. It was designed by architect Marcus F. Cummings and built in 1873. It has a rectangular, gable roofed sanctuary above a raised basement of cut limestone blocks in an early Romanesque or Northern Italianate style. It features an engaged brick bell tower culminating in a belfry and topped by a tall spire. A two-story brick education wing was added in 1952.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
