Great Orton

Orton is a civil parish in the Carlisle district, in the county of Cumbria, England. The parish includes the settlements of Baldwinholme, Great Orton, Little Orton, Orton Rigg and Woodhouses. In 2011 the parish had a population of 453. The parish touches Aikton, Beaumont, Burgh By Sands, Cummersdale, Dalston, Kirkbampton and Thursby. There are 12 listed buildings in Orton.

Orton Rigg is a hamlet in the City of Carlisle district of Cumbria, England.

Orton Moss is a Site of Special Scientific Interest located west of the city of Carlisle in northwest England. Orton Moss is a former raised mire and divided into strips and fields which would traditionally have been used for peat cutting and grazing. Formerly noted for its butterflies, it was once the homes of the wood white, (Leptidea sinapis), the large heath, (Coenonympha tullia) and the marsh fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia). Most fields are now abandoned causing an increase in woodland cover and these species have disappeared. Part is maintained as wet meadow by annual mowing or grazing and devil's-bit scabious, knapweed, meadowsweet and wild angelica are abundant. Small remnants of raised mire vegetation including sphagnum moss, bog rosemary and royal fern. Birds to be seen are willow tits, woodcock, great spotted woodpeckers and willow warblers.

Moorhouse is a village on the B5307 road in the civil parish of Burgh by Sands in the Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria. It is near the city of Carlisle. In 1870–72 the township had a population of 306. It has a pub called 'The Royal Oak Inn'.

Little Orton is a hamlet in the English county of Cumbria. Little Orton is due west of the city of Carlisle and forms part of the civil parish of Orton. Orton Moss lies between Little Orton and Great Orton to its west.

Baldwinholme is a village in Cumbria, England. In 1870-72 the township had a population of 234.

Kirkbampton is a village and civil parish on the B5307 road in the English county of Cumbria. The parish population taken at the 2011 census was 482. It is near the city of Carlisle. It has a church called St Peter's Church, and a primary school (St. Peters CofE School). The parish includes the villages/hamlets of Kirkbampton, Little Bampton, Oughterby and Studholme. The parish Church of Kirkbampton is dedicated to St Peter, and is an ancient Norman structure and a Grade I listed building, of typical Cumbrian character. The chancel arch and North doorway, both being original and in situ, are Saxon in style and fix the dimensions of the early Church. Over the North entrance door is a sculptured tympanum. Only five examples of these tympana exist is Cumbria, and the one at Kirkbampton, with its surrounding arch, is probably the most perfect, despite suffering from the weather. It is not now easy to decipher, but appears to be a figure and animals. A Roman stone found in the walls during restoration work in 1870-1871 is now built into the South wall of the chancel. It bears the inscription "VEX,LEG P.F. FEC.", and has probably been brought from the nearby Hadrian's Wall.

Cardewlees is a hamlet in Cumbria, England, historically part of Cumberland. It is about 4.5 miles (7 km) southwest of Carlisle. It is located northwest of Dalston (of which parish it belongs to), north of Cardew and northeast of Thursby, just off the A595 road. A windmill located here has been converted into apartments. Thursby Manor is located nearby. Cardewlees hit the headlines in 1862 when resident Sarah Carrick poisoned herself with phosphorus paste, or rat poison.Archaeologically it is known for The Cardewlees Altar.

St. Peter's Church is in the village of Kirkbampton, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Carlisle, the archdeaconry of Carlisle, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Andrew, Aikton, St Mary, Kirkandrews-on-Eden with Beaumont, and St Michael, Burgh by Sands. The church contains Norman architecture and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.
