Northfield, Massachusetts

The Northfield Main Street Historic District is a historic district located along the full length of Main Street from Millers Brook to Pauchaug Brook in Northfield, Massachusetts. The district encompasses the part of Main Street that was laid out when Northfield was first established in the 17th century. The area has retained many of its traditional lot divisions, and features civic and residential construction from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Northfield Center Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at the western terminus of Parker Avenue in Northfield, Massachusetts. Established in 1686, it is the town's first burying ground, with documented graves dating to 1714. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Northfield Chateau, also variously known as Chalet Schell and Birnam House, was a large mansion on Highland Avenue in Northfield, Massachusetts. It no longer exists. The chateau was designed by noted architect Bruce Price (of the Château Frontenac) for Francis Robert Schell, a New York capitalist attracted by his interest in Dwight Lyman Moody's work at the nearby Northfield Seminary and Mount Hermon School. It was completed in 1903 on grounds of 125 acres (51 ha). The building was loosely patterned upon a French chateau but fanciful in style, with 99 rooms in a compact, three-story structure ornamented with prominent turrets. Contrary to popular rumors that Mrs. Schell despised the Chateau and refused to live in it, the Schells summered at their beautiful home for 25 years. It was only after the death of her beloved husband in 1928 that Mrs. Schell refused to set foot in the house again, insisting when she stayed at the Northfield Hotel during future summers that she have a room not overlooking the grand house that had been her husband's pride and joy. A server at the Inn overheard her once responding to another guest's compliments of her former home with "I hate it; I never go there." After Mr. Schell's death, the mansion fell into disrepair and was eventually sold to the Northfield School for Girls which also owned the Northfield Hotel. They intended to use it as a meeting place and novelty hotel annex; however, it was never practical for hotel use and in the end was demolished in 1963. Until that time, it was used by the Northfield School for Girls as the location of their prom. That is why the prom at Northfield Mount Hermon School to this day is called The Chat. For a brief time, the basement of the chateau was also used as a youth hostel—America's first, begun by Monroe and Isabel Smith. The Tinney Family of Belcourt Castle rescued many pieces from the chateau before its destruction, notably the mirrors which now are in their banquet hall.

The rail crossing of the Connecticut River (United States) at this location originates from the Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad. The V&MRR was chartered in 1844 and completed an extension between Millers Falls, Massachusetts and Brattleboro, Vermont by 1850. Alvah Crocker, a paper and railroad magnate and U.S. Representative, was the first president of the V&MRR. Initially, the V&MRR was operated by Crocker's Fitchburg Railroad. This rail bridge was used by Amtrak's Vermonter passenger service until December 2014.

Northfield is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Northfield in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,089 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also home to the former Northfield campus of Northfield Mount Hermon School.

The Pine Street School is a historic schoolhouse at 13 Pine Street in Northfield, Massachusetts. The school was built in 1904 and served as such until 1940, and represents a well-preserved specimen of an early 20th-century school building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The Schell Memorial Bridge is a steel cantilever Pennsylvania (Petit) truss bridge spanning the Connecticut River in the town of Northfield, Massachusetts. Designed by Edward S. Shaw, the bridge abutments and piers were built by the firm of Ellis & Buswell of Woburn, Massachusetts, and the superstructure was built by the New England Structural Company of East Everett, Massachusetts. The bridge was commissioned by Francis R. Schell, who gave $42,000 for design and construction. Construction began in 1901 and was completed in 1903. In 1985, due to advanced deterioration of the steel truss members, the bridge was barricaded and abandoned.

The Route 10 bridge, also known as Bennett's Meadow Bridge is a 215.5-metre (707 ft) steel stringer bridge crossing the Connecticut River in the town of Northfield, Massachusetts. The bridge carries state highway Route 10 and was built in 1969.

King Philip's Hill is a historic site off Old Bernardston Road in Northfield, Massachusetts. In 1675 the Wampanoag chief Metacom, colloquially called "King Philip" by English colonists, is claimed to have held council here during King Philip's War. The hill has evidence of what appears to be trenches and other remnants of fortification from the time, but the exact nature of these is debatable; 19th century area historian George Sheldon believed the trenches to be the work of a colonist. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. It is now owned by the town, with a trail that loops around and over the hill, with informational signs along the way.

Satan's Kingdom is an unincorporated village in the town of Northfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. Satan's Kingdom is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest of the Northfield CDP and is near the Vermont border.

Pioneer Valley Regional School is a public regional comprehensive secondary school located in Northfield, Massachusetts, United States. It offers grades seven through twelve. It is the primary high school for the towns of Leyden, Northfield, Warwick and Bernardston, Massachusetts. It is also an alternative for students from the neighboring town of Vernon, Vermont. The school was founded in 1957.

Stratton Mountain, 392 metres (1,286 ft), of the Bald Hills region of east Franklin County, Massachusetts is located partially within Northfield State Forest parcels south of Alexander Hill Road. Stratton Mountain is located within the town of Northfield, Massachusetts and is within the drainage basin of the Connecticut River. The L-shaped mountain offers expansive views from atop its eastern and western slopes. Stratton Mountain is composed of quartzite, a weather-resistant metamorphic rock. The 114 miles (602,000 ft) mile Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, a section of the national New England National Scenic Trail, traverses both the East and West views. A north-south powerline cut traverses Stratton Mountain near Alexander Hill Road and then continues but changes direction to the south-southwest closely paralleling the mountain's western slope also heading south-southwestward.
