Swinton railway station (South Yorkshire)

Swinton Town railway station was the second railway station built on the North Midland Railway to serve Swinton, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The station was opened on 2 July 1899 when traffic was transferred from the first station. The station replaced the original and was built to its north, on the opposite side of the bridge which takes the road to Mexborough below the line. The main station building was at road level and this contained the booking office, parcels office and stationmaster's room. This remains, in use, as the offices of a manufacturing company. The station had four platform faces on two island platforms, one set between the Up and Down main lines, the other between the Up and Down slow lines. Access to the platforms was by a path and subway from the booking office. Both platforms had wooden waiting rooms. Train services ran to Sheffield Midland, Leeds City via Cudworth along the North Midland route and Doncaster on the original South Yorkshire Railway route. In 1963 the station was refurbished and equipped with electric lighting, along with some other stations on the line. The station and the signal box were also repainted. Along with other stations on the line the station closed in January 1968 and the platform buildings demolished shortly afterwards. In 1991 an all new station was built south of the bridge on the location of the original station.

The Don Pottery was a 19th-century manufacturer of earthenware, whose factory was located in the town of Swinton in South Yorkshire, England, on the River Don. It is not to be confused with the Swinton Pottery.

Swinton, later Swinton Central railway station was situated on the South Yorkshire Railway line from Sheffield Victoria to Doncaster, between Kilnhurst Central and Mexborough. The station was to serve the community of Swinton Bridge, near Mexborough, South Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in April 1872, shortly after the through line, and comprised two flanking platforms. The main building, including booking office, porters room etc., was on the Sheffield-bound platform and was a single storey structure with hipped roof. The Doncaster-bound platform had, originally, a wooden waiting shelter which was replaced by a brick-built example in the 1890s. At the south (Kilnhurst) end of the platforms was an occupation crossing which gave access to the platforms. This crossing was unprotected by signals or any form of locking. The line was also crossed by a footbridge at this point with steps, not only to the thoroughfare but to the station platforms. In 1939, at the outbreak of World War II, a government factory was built on land over this crossing and this had rail connection. With more than local traffic to cross the crossing was altered to manual worked gates released from Mexborough No.3 signal box (at the north end of the station). Unusually the responsibility for manning the gates was with the factory authorities. The factory was bought by "white goods" manufacturer Hotpoint. Swinton Central was closed on 15 September 1958.

Rawmarsh and Conisbrough is a constituency in South Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It is currently represented by John Healey of the Labour Party, who currently serves as Secretary of State for Defence in the government of Keir Starmer. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, this seat was first contested at the 2024 general election.

Swinton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England on the west bank of the River Don. It has a population of 15,559 (2011). The town is five miles north-northeast of the larger town of Rotherham and directly west-southwest of Mexborough. The original junior and infant school building built in 1852 on Church Street (formerly Fitzwilliam School) still exists, and is being converted into residential apartments called Fitzwilliam Lodge.

Mexborough Junction was one of two railway stations which served the former mining town of Mexborough in the Don Valley of South Yorkshire, England, prior to the present station being opened in 1871, the other being Mexborough (Ferry Boat) Halt.Mexborough Junction station was opened by the South Yorkshire Railway at the point where the curve to Swinton on the North Midland Railway leaves their line to Barnsley, about 660 yards (600 m) west of the present railway station. The station was opened to passengers in January 1850 and closed, with the opening of the present station on 4 March 1871. This station was some distance from the town centre which, at the time, was around the parish church and close by Ferry Boat Halt.

The South Yorkshire Coalfield is so named from its position within Yorkshire. It covers most of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and a small part of North Yorkshire. The exposed coalfield outcrops in the Pennine foothills and dips under Permian rocks in the east. Its most famous coal seam is the Barnsley Bed. Coal has been mined from shallow seams and outcrops since medieval times and possibly earlier.

Kilnhurst West railway station was the second railway station on the Midland line in Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, England. It was one of two railway stations serving the village, the other being Kilnhurst Central. They were situated at either end of the village's main thoroughfare, Victoria Street. The first station in the village, believed to have been on the south side of the bridge, opened by the North Midland Railway, was closed in January 1851. This station was located on the former North Midland Railway and was served mainly by Sheffield Midland - Cudworth - Leeds stopping services. The station booking office was at road level, with an entrance on Highthorn Road, and was linked to its four platforms by a covered wooden footbridge. By the early 1980s little remained of the station. The station was closed, along with others on the line, when these trains were axed on 1 January 1968. The line is still in use for freight, express passenger and local passenger trains, the nearest station to Kilnhurst is now approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away at Swinton. Station House, the ex station manager's house still stands on the south west side of the overbridge at the junction of Highthorn Road/Wentworth Road.

Dearne Valley College is a further education college situated in the Manvers Park area of Wath-upon-Dearne, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It also has a campus near Wath-upon-Dearne town centre. In September 2017 the college merged with the RNN Group. The college joined Rotherham College and North Nottinghamshire College as part of the group, but continues to retain its local identity and current campus based in Manvers.

Kilnhurst Central was a railway station in Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, England, one of two railway stations serving the village, the other being Kilnhurst West, situated on the North Midland Railway line. Kilnhurst Central was on the former Great Central Railway's (GCR) Sheffield Victoria - Doncaster line, between Parkgate and Aldwarke and Swinton Central.

Kilnhurst is a village in South Yorkshire, England, on the banks of the River Don and the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation. It grew up around the coal mining, ceramics, glass, brick-making and locomotive industries; none of these industries remain in the village.
