South Side Market Building

Birmingham was a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on the South Side of what is now Pittsburgh. Incorporated in 1826 from St. Clair Township, the borough comprised a section of the South Side Flats between what is now South 6th and South 17th Streets. Birmingham was laid out in 1811 by Dr. Nathaniel Bedford, son-in-law of John Ormsby. Bedford named the settlement after his native city, Birmingham in England.Birmingham became flanked by the boroughs of South Pittsburgh (created 1848) on the west and East Birmingham (1849) on the east. Those three and other nearby boroughs were merged into Pittsburgh in 1872.The namesake Birmingham Bridge is actually located at the former East Birmingham.

WESA (90.5 FM) is a public radio station based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The station broadcasts at 90.5 MHz with an ERP of 25 kW. WESA is a full member station of NPR and is also affiliated with Public Radio International and American Public Media.

The South Side Flats is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's South Side area. It is located just south of the Monongahela River. The neighborhood has one of the City of Pittsburgh's largest concentrations of 19th-century homes, which has prompted outsiders to call the neighborhood the City's Georgetown. It includes many bars and restaurants as well as residences. The main throughway in the South Side Flats is East Carson Street. The street is home to a significant portion of Pittsburgh's nightlife.

City Theatre is a professional theatre company located in Pittsburgh's South Side. It specializes in productions of new plays and has commissioned new works by playwrights on the national theatre scene, including Christopher Durang, Adam Rapp, and Jeffrey Hatcher. Established in 1975 as the City Players under the direction of Marjorie Walker, it was originally composed mainly of Carnegie Mellon graduates and was part of Pittsburgh's Department of Parks and Recreation, performing at schools, parks, and housing projects. Initially the group shared their performance space in the North Side's Allegheny Center with Pittsburgh Public Theater. In 1979, the group was offered a residency at the University of Pittsburgh and renamed itself City Theatre. “Homeless” for a brief period of time, the University of Pittsburgh theatre department offered to shelter the theater company in 1980. Attilo Favorini, head of the department, thought that, “The City Theater offered us [Pitt] the opportunity for Pitt’s students to work a professional company.”(Steele, Bruce “Artistic Struggles -The City Theater Company: A History of Bad Luck and Good Theater” pg. 27) In addition to receiving a new troupe of professional actors, arts funding through CETA enabled the expansion of the company and the creation of the Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 1980. In 1981, under the artistic direction of Marc Masterson, the company moved to a new performance space on Bouquet Street in Oakland. The company again moved to a new performance space at the former Bingham United Methodist Church in the South Side in 1991, where in addition to its own season it acted as a host space for the earliest productions of the Pittsburgh New Works Festival. Marc Masterson became artistic director of Actors Theatre of Louisville in Kentucky, and Tracy Brigden became artistic director in 2001.In addition to its mainstage season, City Theatre offers educational outreach programs such as the Young Playwrights Festival, in which selected submitted plays by students in middle school and high school are given professional productions, and City Theatre Playmakers, which provides opportunities for Pittsburgh youth to write radio dramas that are fully produced and broadcast.

The Oliver Bath House is located at 38 S 10th Street in the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1915 in the Tudor Revival and Gothic Collegiate architectural style, the building today serves as a public swimming pool.

Bedford School, located at 910 Bingham Street in the historic South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1986. According to Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, it is the oldest public school building still standing within the city of Pittsburgh.

Garrison Foundry-Mackintosh Hemphill Company Offices located at 901-911 Bingham Street in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were built from 1895 to 1902. This Greek Revival styled building was the first building built on the former St. Mary's Parish Complex. These yellow brick buildings were part of the A. Garrison Foundry Co., later the Mackintosh-Hemphill Co., which produced basic iron and steel equipment from the 1870s to the 1980s. The plant equipped dozens of mills in the United States and abroad, including U.S. Steel's Homestead Works, which was conceived, designed, constructed and equipped by James Hemphill. At least one of the Mackintosh-Hemphill buildings (the building on the corner) is attributed to Longfellow, Alden & Harlow. The foundry was added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on December 30, 2008.

The South Side High School in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a building from 1897. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.In 1977, South High School won its only City Championship in Football, the first and only in any sport. The school was shut down on 14 August 2004; it would be sold as housing to Gregory Development in 2008 for $1.1 million.

The Birmingham Public School in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a building from 1871. In 1944 it was sold to the Catholic Church and served as the middle school for St. Adalbert's Parish. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is currently an apartment building.

South Tenth Street Bridge, most often called the Tenth Street Bridge, but officially dubbed the Philip Murray Bridge, is a suspension bridge spanning the Monongahela River in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the longest bridge spanning the Monongahela River and serves as the only cable suspension bridge across any of Pittsburgh's three rivers. The bridge was renamed on Labor Day 2007 for Philip Murray, the first president of the United Steelworkers of America.The bridge was built in 1931 and connects South Tenth Street on the South Side to Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnel under the Bluff. A staircase leads from the northern terminus of the bridge up to the campus of Duquesne University on the Bluff. In 2015, the bridge was one of 3 bridges to have bike specific lanes installed.

Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church & Rectory (also known as St. Michael the Archangel Church, and currently called Angel's Arms Condominiums) is a former Roman Catholic church and rectory located at 21 Pius Street in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The church was built from 1855 to 1861 and designed in Romanesque Revival style by architect Charles Bartberger (1824–1896). The rectory behind the church (which can be seen at this link) was built in 1890 and designed in Richardsonian Romanesque style by architect Frederick C. Sauer (1860–1942). Both the church and the rectory were added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on February 23, 2001, and the church was added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 1970.

St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church is a Ukrainian Catholic parish in the South Side Flats neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania under the authority of the Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio. The parish was established in 1891. Its historic church building, located at 109 South Carson Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was built in 1895 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
