Duluth Civic Center Historic District

The Duluth Public Library is a library in downtown Duluth, Minnesota. It is a part of the Arrowhead Library System and serves a population of 86,319.

The Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building, United States Courthouse and Custom House in Duluth, Minnesota, is a courthouse of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Completed in 1930, it is part of the Duluth Civic Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In 2007 the United States Congress passed an act to rename the building for former Circuit Court judge Gerald Heaney. It was enacted into law that same year.

The Duluth News Tribune (known locally as The Tribune or DNT) is a newspaper based in Duluth, Minnesota. While circulation is heaviest in the Twin Ports metropolitan area, delivery extends into northeastern Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The paper has a limited distribution in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The News Tribune has been owned by Forum Communications since 2006.

Veterans Memorial Hall, or VMH, located in Duluth, Minnesota, is a program of the Saint Louis County, Minnesota, Historical Society. It is located at the Saint Louis County Heritage and Arts Center (the Depot). Its mission is to collect veterans' stories and artifacts, to maintain a permanent exhibit recognizing the military service of local veterans and units, and to educate the public about local veteran history.

The St. Louis County Depot is a historic train station in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was built as a union station in 1892, serving seven railroads at its peak. Rail service ceased in 1969 and the building was threatened with demolition until it reopened in 1973 as St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (The Depot). Train service also resumed from 1974 to 1985, by Amtrak.The Depot is owned by St. Louis County. Mission: The St. Louis County Depot is a landmark cornerstone of arts and cultural organizations that entertains, educates, inspires, and provides space for a diverse group of guests. The St. Louis County Depot provides new, engaging experiences; is a destination and a community center; and fosters community through education and entertainment that enhances the quality of life for visitors. Today, the building houses three exhibiting museums (the Duluth Art Institute, Lake Superior Railroad Museum, and St. Louis County Historical Society Museum), two performing arts organizations (Duluth Playhouse and Minnesota Ballet), and serves as the departure point for the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

The North Shore Scenic Railroad (reporting mark NSSR) is a heritage railroad that operates between Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota, United States, along 28 miles (45 km) of the Lakefront Line, once part of the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad. Owned by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, the NSSR operates out of the former Duluth Union Depot, now the St. Louis County Depot. Ridership hit 110,000 in 2018, the railroad's record.

Munger Terrace is an architecturally significant rowhouse in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was designed by Oliver G. Traphagen and Francis W. Fitzpatrick and built from 1891 to 1892, originally containing eight luxury townhomes. Munger Terrace was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its local significance in the theme of architecture. It was nominated for being Duluth's finest example of Châteauesque architecture applied to an apartment building.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sacred Heart School and Christian Brothers Home comprise a former Roman Catholic diocesan complex in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Sacred Heart Cathedral was built from 1894 to 1896 and served as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Duluth until 1957, after which it became a parish church. Sacred Heart School was built in 1904 and the Christian Brothers Home—a monastic residence for the school faculty—was built in 1907.In 1985 the diocese merged the parish into another and sold off the Sacred Heart buildings. The cathedral is now the Sacred Heart Music Center, a performance and event venue. The school has been repurposed as the Damiano Center, an ecumenical provider of social services. The monastery is now Alicia's Place, which offers Section 8 housing for homeless women.The cathedral and school were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In 2005 the listing was expanded to include the Christian Brothers Home. The complex was listed for its state-level significance in the themes of architecture and religion. It was nominated for its exemplary Late Gothic Revival cathedral designed by local architect Gearhard A. Tenbusch and for representing the historical seat of authority of the Diocese of Duluth and its educational efforts.

The YWCA of Duluth is a former YWCA building in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was designed by architects Frederick German and Anton Werner Lignell and built in 1908 to provide programs and activities for Duluth's young, single women. It contained a gymnasium, swimming pool, cafeteria, meeting rooms, and apartments. In addition to the organization's usual suite of athletics, Bible study, and employment assistance, the YWCA of Duluth catered to the city's large foreign-born population with English and citizenship classes. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 for its local significance in the theme of social history. It was nominated for its role in local civic development through the YWCA's social welfare efforts.After a century in the building, the YWCA sold the property to the American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO) in 2008. The YWCA had determined that it was no longer using the space to its full capacity and it was financially burdensome for them to maintain. AICHO planned to adapt the space to create apartments, a cultural center, an art gallery, a health-care clinic, and offices for social services, while retaining the auditorium, gymnasium, and rooftop play area. The YWCA relocated its headquarters to another building and arranged to lease space in the old for its child-care center.

Central Hillside is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States; located directly uphill from the city's downtown. The neighborhood offers views of the city and lake. Duluth's Mesaba Avenue (Highway 194) travels through the Central Hillside neighborhood. Many residents consider the area west of Mesaba Avenue to be the Observation Hill neighborhood, which is not included on official city maps. Mesaba Avenue, Lake Avenue, and Fourth Street are three of the main routes in the community. Central Hillside has notable architectural gems, including the Sacred Heart Center on Fourth Street. Buckingham Creek flows through the neighborhood near 12th Avenue West.

Harbor City International School, also known as Harbor City or HCIS, is a charter secondary school in Duluth, Minnesota, United States, that opened in fall 2002. It serves students in grades nine through twelve. The school is governed by an eight-member board of directors.

The historic Duluth Public Library is a former Carnegie library building at 101 West Second Street in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was constructed in 1902 as the first purpose-built facility of the Duluth Public Library. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 for its local significance in the themes of architecture and education. It was nominated for its Neoclassical architecture and association with early community education efforts.Library services relocated to a new downtown facility in 1980, after which the historic library was renovated and converted into an office building.
