The parish was subject to various boundary changes between 1866 and 1934 when it absorbed the former civil parish of Crosby-on-Eden.The River Eden forms the southern edge of the parish and the M6 motorway and A689 road both run through the area.

Walby is a hamlet in the civil parish of Stanwix Rural, in the Carlisle district, in the county of Cumbria, England. It is a few miles away from the city of Carlisle and near the hamlet of Linstock. It is on Willow Beck near the River Eden and is about half a mile away from the main A689 road. It has an open farm. Circa 1870, it had a population of 40 as recorded in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales. The surname derives from the place.

In 1870-72 the township had a population of 97. The property belonged to Richard de Tilliol of Scaleby Castle, whose descendant Adam de Rickerby lived in the village in about 1230. Rickerby Park is nearby.

Rickerby Park is a public open space in Carlisle, Cumbria on the banks of the River Eden. The parkland is dotted with mature trees, beneath which cattle and sheep graze the sweet pasture grasses. A riverbank path follows the sweeping bends of the Eden and, by crossing the Memorial Bridge, you can complete a circular walk back to the city centre on the opposite bank. Nearby is Rickerby Hall and the village of Rickerby.
