National Coal Mining Museum for England

Caphouse Colliery, originally known as Overton Colliery, was a coal mine in Overton, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. It was situated on the Denby Grange estate owned by the Lister Kaye family, and was worked from the 18th century until 1985. It reopened as the Yorkshire Mining Museum in 1988, and is now the National Coal Mining Museum for England.

Flockton Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Kirkburton, in the Kirklees district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It is immediately east of Flockton village, on the junction of the road from Overton with the A637 road between Grange Moor and West Bretton and close to the border of Kirklees and Wakefield districts. Flockton Green has a pub called The George and Dragon.

Overton is a village between Wakefield and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 5.5 miles (9 km) south-west of Wakefield, 4 miles (6 km) south of Ossett, 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Netherton and 4 miles south-west of Horbury. Overton is conjoined at its north-east to the larger village of Middlestown. Coxley Woods are less than 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south-east. Overton was historically called 'Over Shitlington', and was one of four villages in the township of 'Shitlington' in the civil parish of Thornhill. In 1881 Overton was in the county court district and Poor Law Union of Wakefield. Village occupations at the time included two farmers, a shopkeeper, the manager of "Cap House pit," and the landlords of The Reindeer and The Black Swan public houses. Shitlington was officially changed to Sitlington in 1929. St Luke's Parish Church in Overton is part of the ecclesiastical parish of Middlestown with Netherton.Overton is significant for the National Coal Mining Museum, situated on the A642. The former Caphouse Colliery was worked from at least 1789 until the coal was exhausted in 1985 when work was started to convert it to a museum.

The Flockton Collieries were small, shallow coal pits that exploited the coal seams north of the village of Flockton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The coal seams, the Flockton Thick, which was up to 48 inches, and the Flockton Thin at about 15 inches, were named from where they outcropped.In the 17th century, coal master, Richard Carter who died around 1700, made his fortune from the pits, some of which he used to build the village's first church, almshouses and the school. The coal was sold locally until the River Calder was made navigable above Wakefield after 1758.

Thornhill Community Academy is a coeducational secondary school with academy status situated just outside Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. The school is on the western side of Kirklees (Huddersfield) and near the M1 and the M62 motorways. It serves both the urban and rural areas of Dewsbury and draws from the villages of Thornhill, Thornhill Lees and Savile Town. The series Educating Yorkshire was filmed in the school. Thornhill Community Academy was formerly the Community Science College at Thornhill, and Thornhill High School.

It is in the parish of Kirkburton and whilst it is in Kirklees, it has a Wakefield postcode. The name derives from Floki (an Old Norse person's name) and Tūn (which is Old English for enclosure or fence.The village is situated approximately 6 miles (10 km) east from Huddersfield and the same distance south-west from Wakefield. It has a population of 1,410 (2006 estimate). Flockton is a commuter village owing to the proximity of the M1 motorway. It extends along the A637 Barnsley Road which brings with it a large amount of traffic.Flockton is close to Grange Moor. To the west is Flockton Moor, an area containing mainly farm houses. Within the village is Parkside, an area of council housing with most houses terraced and of red-brick. In contrast there are stone-built private developments. House prices are above average for the area.Flockton contains a newsagent/convenience store, a hairdressing salon, a junior school, a working men's club, a motorcycle shop, a church, two public houses. The Dartmouth Arms public house was replaced by an Indian restaurant in October 2007. The George and Dragon public house (Now "Jack's") is one of the oldest pubs in England, dating from 1485.

Thornhill is a village and former township in the unparished area of Dewsbury, Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Thornhill was absorbed into Dewsbury County Borough in 1910. It is located on a hill on the south side of the River Calder, and has extensive views of Dewsbury, Ossett and Wakefield. It is known for its collection of Anglo-Saxon crosses.

Overthorpe is a neighbourhood in Thornhill near Dewsbury in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. Historically, it is part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Thornhill Grammar School was a school between Thornhill, West Yorkshire and Dewsbury. The building is dated 1643 and now disused. It was built with money bequeathed by Charles Greenwood, Rector of Thornhill. The rear part was built as a copy in 1884. It is a grade II listed building.

Thornhill Hall is a ruined medieval manor house on a moated island located in Rectory Park, Thornhill, West Yorkshire, England. The ruins are listed as grade II. and the moat, with the surrounding grounds, is a scheduled monument.Excavations carried out between 1964 and 1972 proved that there had been two halls on the island, an earlier large 13th-century building with clay-bonded foundation walls, and a later c. 1450 stone H-plan building. The later building showed signs of renovation in the 16th century, when a paved floor, plaster walls and a chimney were added.

Middlestown is a small village in the Wakefield District in West Yorkshire, England. The village is in the civil parish of Sitlington and located halfway between the city of Wakefield and the town of Huddersfield, and is 3 miles (5 km) south east of Dewsbury.
