Große Blöße

At 524.9 m above sea level (NN) the Großer Ahrensberg is one of the highest hills in the Solling range, which is located in southern Lower Saxony in Germany. This densely wooded hill lies about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) as the crow flies west-southwest of Dassel between the villages of Hellental and Schießhaus to the north and Silberborn to the south. It is located on the western flanks of the Hellental Graben, through which the river Helle flows, and is surrounded by the Solling-Vogler Nature Park. On the far (south-southeast) side of this graben is the Große Blöße. The region of the Großer Ahrensberg belongs to the Hoher Solling climatic zone above 400 m, which has high levels of precipitation and low temperatures. These climatic conditions are e.g. still provide a sufficiently healthy environment for beech woods. Several forest tracks and footpaths meet at the very top of the Großer Ahrensberg.

The Solling-Vogler Nature Park (German: Naturpark Solling-Vogler) is a nature park in South Lower Saxony in Germany. It has an area of 52,000 hectares (200 sq mi) and was established in 1966. The nature park includes the hill ranges of the Solling and the Vogler but also the Burgberg which lies east of Weser valley between the two upland regions. It is looked after by the Zweckverband Naturpark Solling-Vogler, whose sponsors are the districts of Holzminden and Northeim and the state of Lower Saxony.

The Solling () is a range of hills up to 527.8 m above sea level (NN) high in the Weser Uplands in the German state of Lower Saxony, whose extreme southerly foothills extend into Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. Inside Lower Saxony it is the second largest range of hills and the third highest after the Harz (Wurmberg; 971 m) and the Kaufungen Forest (Haferberg; 581 m). The Solling is a cultural landscape consisting mainly of spruce and beech forests. Oak also grows in some areas. The Solling forest is home of a number of animals and birds, for example red deer or chaffinch. They can best be observed in the Neuhaus wildlife park. Together with the smaller and lower Vogler range and the little Burgberg to the north, the Solling is part of the Solling-Vogler Nature Park.

Mackensen is a village of about 450 inhabitants which is incorporated into the city of Dassel (Northeim district, Germany) since 1974. This village lies at the east side of the Solling mountains. The name Mackensen is a derivation of Makkonhusun, which in medieval times in the eastphalian language meant: village of a man named Makko. It was mentioned in a written list of Corvey Abbey in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, it was a part of the Suilbergau district, their men being ministeriales of the Counts of Dassel, who lived on the nearby Hunnesrück castle. Today Mackensen is located at the political border between the district of Northeim and the district of Holzminden (that border goes through a nearby hill named Heukenberg). In medieval times, Mackensen was located at a border, too, when it belonged to the Bishopric of Hildesheim, because the neighbouring territory of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel began nearby. Therefore, people constructed a church in their village devoted to Saint Christopher (patron of travellers) so that travellers could pray in that church before they continued their journey. Coat of arms shows an ear and a two-handled hand saw on green background. These symbols remind that people were dependent from agriculture and the Solling woods in their history.

Hunnesrück Castle (German: Burg Hunnesrück) was a hilltop castle built in the 13th century. Its ruins are located in the Amtsberge hills near Dassel in the district of Northeim in south Lower Saxony in Germany. The castle was constructed in the 13th century and destroyed in 1521 during the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud. Only parts of the moats, walls and ramparts remain.
