Westbrook Hay

Bourne End is a village in Hertfordshire, England. It is situated on the ancient Roman Akeman Street between Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead, on the former A41 London-Liverpool Trunk Route, on the Grand Union Canal that runs between London and Birmingham and at the confluence of the Chiltern chalk stream, the Bourne Gutter and the River Bulbourne. It is in the Dacorum Ward of Bovingdon, Flaunden and Chipperfield.

The Westbrook Hay Hill Climb was an annual motorsports event near Hemel Hempstead in England, where drivers competed on an uphill course. The Herts County Automobile & Aero Club held the first Westbrook Hay speed hillclimb in 1953, and organised all events there until the course closed in 1962. Between 1959 and 1962 the track hosted four rounds of the British Hill Climb Championship. A 1953 edition of Motor Sport describes the course as "situated in the Westbrook Hay estate near Hemel Hempstead on the main Hemel to Berkhamsted road (A41). The timed length will be 500 yards and the road surface is tarmac. From the start on a gradient of 1 in 3 the road takes a fast left-hand sweep to come to a right-angled bend also to the left. From there the road sweeps to the right to the finishing line. The overall gradient is 1 in 11."The course started just to the south of the A41 (today near the junction with the A4251), between Hemel Hempstead and Bourne End and climbed 650 yards up the main drive to Westbrook Hay House, today occupied by Westbrook Hay School.

The Box Moor Trust is a charitable trust responsible for the management of nearly 500 acres of land within the parishes of Hemel Hempstead and Bovingdon, in Hertfordshire, England. The Trust was officially founded in 1594 in order to ensure that the land in the Boxmoor area remained free for residents to use and enjoy. As a result, almost all of the land that comprises the Box Moor Trust estate is open access, with just over a quarter being common land.

The Bourne End rail crash occurred on 30 September 1945 when a sleeper train from Perth to London Euston derailed, killing 43. The cause was driver error, possibly compounded by ambiguous signalling regulations.

Chaulden is a residential district in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England located west of the town centre and bordering on open countryside. It was an early development in the construction of Hemel Hempstead new town, commenced in 1953 and has its own neighbourhood shopping centre. The name Chaulden can be traced back to 1523 as a local field name and as meaning a chalky valley. A country house and estate called Chaulden House occupied the area during the nineteenth century. Chaulden House stables and an octagonal tower dating from the mid-19th century are all that now remain of the house. The tower may have been a dovecote. It is currently used by the NHS. The ancient Chaulden Lane is thought to preserve the route of Akeman Street, the Roman Road along the Bulbourne valley A large part of the site was previously occupied by Pixies Hill – a children's camp run by the National Camps Corporation. The old camp buildings were converted into the district's first school before permanent schools could be constructed.Building work on the new town district commenced in 1953 with the first houses occupied in December of that year.The Chaulden Neighbourhood centre – a parade of shops set in a crescent around a car park – was completed in 1958. A nearby pub, the Tudor Rose, also built by the New Town corporation, celebrates Hemel Hempstead's link to the Tudor King Henry VIII, who gave the town its charter.The population of the appropriate Dacorum Ward (Chaulden and Warner's End) at the 2011 Censuswas 9,146.

Boxmoor Roman Villa is a ruined Roman Villa at Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. The remains have been excavated, but they are now buried. The Roman villa was occupied from the first century AD up to the Fourth century. First remains of a Roman villa were already excavated in 1837. A plan, the finds and a drawing of a mosaic found were published. Further and full excavations were done in 1969 up to 1970 as a school was built on the site of the Roman villa.: 57 The excavations uncovered five building phases of a Roman villa. The earliest remains are a timber building dating to the first century AD.: 57–59  Around AD 150 the timber house was replaced by a stone building, not exactly on the same spot, but slightly further north. The new Villa consisted of a range of rooms with a veranda on the west side. Several rooms had hypocaust heating. Mosaics were found. and wall paintings.: 88–93  The villa was abandoned in the fourth century AD.

South West Hertfordshire is a constituency in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament, represented since 2019 by Gagan Mohindra, a Conservative.

Shrubhill Common is a 9.8 hectare Local Nature Reserve in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. It is owned and managed by Dacorum Borough Council. The site is common land, and it is part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.The common is woodland and scrub, together with two fields which are chalk grassland. In 2014 23 species of butterfly were recorded, including marbled whites. There are over 100 species of wild flowers, and herbs such as marjoram and basil. There is access from Shrub Hill Road.

Sparrows Herne Turnpike Road from London to Aylesbury was an 18th-century English toll road passing through Watford and Hemel Hempstead. The route was approximately that of the original A41 road; the Edgware Road, through Watford, Kings Langley, Apsley, the Boxmoor area of Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Northchurch, Cow Roast and Tring. Much of this part is now numbered the A4251 road. It linked in with other turnpikes to the north forming a route to Birmingham. The turnpike trust was set up in 1762 by around 300 landed gentry to look after about 26 miles of road between Sparrows Herne near Bushey and Walton near Aylesbury. It was the turnpike's depot at Sparrows Herne which gave the road its name. The frequent use of the route by heavy carts carrying grain to London made it notorious for its rutted and pitted state even after being made into a turnpike. The turnpike survived the coming of the railways until 1872, when it passed to the route's various parishes and highway boards to maintain and the tolls were removed.

Hemel Hempstead railway station is on the West Coast Main Line, on the western edge of the town of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. The station is 24+1⁄2 miles (39.4 km) north-west of London Euston on the West Coast Main Line. Hemel Hempstead is managed by London Northwestern Railway and all train services are operated by London Northwestern Railway and Southern. Hemel Hempstead railway station is one of two railway stations now serving the town, the other being Apsley. Both were built when Hemel Hempstead was still small; before it was designated a New Town in 1946 and grew rapidly in size. Bus services run from there to the town centre. Also in the vicinity of the station are two pubs and the Grand Union Canal, about 110 yd (100 m) away. There are four full-length (12 car) through platforms and one disused south-facing bay (on the slow lines). Ticket Barriers are in operation.

John F Kennedy Catholic School is a voluntary aided Roman Catholic comprehensive secondary school located in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. It opened in 1967 and has a current student population of approximately 1,100, aged 11 to 18. The school's motto is Pacem in terris (peace on Earth). The school is also part of a local partnership of secondary schools, offering a variety of subject choices for post-16 students, but as of 2020, this partnership is more limited.In September 2009, the school opened a major £8.4m ($16.2m) new building project which has expanded facilities for several of the school's subject departments. The building project includes: A new teaching block, taking up part of the area where the school's current tennis courts used to be 4 new tennis courts on currently unused field area A new sports hall in the 'spinney' (a wooded area on the school site) A new playground in front of the school's largest teaching block, the 'B Block' A new car park to help deal with local parking issues, which will take up the remainder of the current tennis court areaThe school has minimised the impact on the local environment by avoiding significant loss of trees. The project also involved the planting of new trees, and using trees which are required to be cut down as wood-chip paths and for the construction of the gazebo-type structure in the so-called 'spinney'.

Fields End is a hamlet to the North West of Hemel Hempstead, just beyond Warner's End on Boxted Road, in Hertfordshire, England. At the 2011 Census the population of the hamlet was included in the Dacorum ward of Chaulden and Warner's End. The village is formally recognised as village within Hertfordshire by Hertfordshire County Council.Fields End consisted largely of agricultural fields until planning permission was granted for a new residential estate to begin construction on green belt land between Warner's End and Potten End in the 1980s. The estate was completed in the late 1990s, with Dacorum council having made several attempts to continue to develop the remaining agricultural land of Fields End Farm in the intervening years. Attempts to develop the fields around Fields End continue to be investigated by Dacorum council, with formal objections being registered at recently as December 2008.Local schools are Potten End School, Micklem Primary and formerly Martindale Primary schools (closed 2008), and the John F Kennedy Catholic School. The sites of Fields End Infants and Junior School and The Halsey School, the neighbouring High School both formerly on the south-east side of Polehanger Lane near the lower spur of Fields End Lane from the end of Boxted Road now lies beneath the Fields End estate housing development which was constructed in the early 1990s. Neighbouring towns are the Hemel Hempstead district of Warner's End and the villages of Potten End and Little Heath.
