Reichenau (Romansh: La Punt) is a village in the municipality of Tamins in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, where the two Rhine tributaries Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein meet, forming the Alpine Rhine. It is a major traffic junction of the routes from Chur towards the Oberalp Pass and Lukmanier Pass and from Chur towards San Bernardino Pass and Julier Pass. The civilisation of the place is traced back until the year 500. The name originates from the Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance which owned properties in this area during the Middle Ages. The monastery was founded in 724 and drew to itself abbots with connections to the highest Carolingian and Ottonian society; it housed a school, and a famous scriptorium. See Abbey of Reichenau. In the 14th century the first bridges were built over the Rhine tributaries. A roadhouse was built 1570 to collect the bridge toll. In the 17th century the first buildings for the sovereignty of Reichenau were built which became the castle of Reichenau. The Rhaetian Railway reached Reichenau in 1896.

Vorderrhein

The Vorderrhein (German: [ˈfɔʁdɐˌʁaɪn] ; Sursilvan: ; Sutsilvan: Ragn Anteriur; Rumantsch Grischun, Vallader, and Puter: Rain Anteriur; Surmiran: Ragn anteriour; "Anterior Rhine") is one of the two sources of the Rhine. Its catchment area of 1,512 square kilometres (584 square miles) is located predominantly in the canton of Graubünden (Switzerland). The Vorderrhein is about 76 kilometres (47 mi) long, thus more than 5% longer than the Hinterrhein (each measured to the farthest source). The Vorderrhein, however, has an average water flow of 53.8 m3/s (1,900 cu ft/s), which is less than the flow of the Hinterrhein. According to the Atlas of Switzerland of the Swiss Federal Office of Topography, the source of the Vorderrhein—and thus of the Rhine—is located north of the Rein da Tuma and Lake Toma. Vorderrhein was also the name of a judicial district that was created in 1851 with the reorganization of the judiciary of Graubünden. In 2001, it was annexed by the District Surselva. The largest communities along the Vorderrhein are Disentis and Ilanz.

Reichenau-Tamins railway station

Reichenau-Tamins railway station is a railway station in the municipality of Domat/Ems serving the communities of Reichenau and Tamins in Switzerland. It is an important station for connections between the Landquart–Thusis and the Reichenau-Tamins–Disentis/Mustér lines as it is where the two lines diverge. From this station, there are trains to Chur, Disentis, Scuol, St. Moritz and Thusis. At Chur, there are also mainline connecting services to Zürich.

It connects Vättis in the canton of St. Gallen to Tamins in the canton of Graubünden. The pass itself is located south of the hamlet of Kunkels within Graubünden. The Kunkels Pass is traversed by a small road. The pass is overlooked by the Ringelspitz and by the Calanda.
