Quedlinburg

Quedlinburg station is a station on the Magdeburg–Thale railway in Quedlinburg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It was built in 1862 as a through station on the southern edge of the town. The Gothic Revival entrance building of 1862, together with the other parts of the nearly complete Gründerzeit ensemble, is heritage-protected. Since the conversion of part of the formerly standard-gauge line to Frose in 2006 to create the Quedlinburg–Gernrode section of the metre gauge Selke Valley Railway (Selketalbahn), it has been an interchange station between that line and the standard gauge Halberstadt–Thale railway. From 1908 to 1969, the station was also served by the line to Blankenburg, the so-called Quäke. Of the other four former Quedlinburg stations, the request stop of Quedlinburg-Quarmbeck is the only one still operating.

Quedlinburg was a district (Kreis) in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from west clockwise) Wernigerode, Halberstadt, Bördekreis, Aschersleben-Staßfurt, Mansfelder Land, Sangerhausen and the district Nordhausen in Thuringia.

The theft of medieval art from Quedlinburg was perpetrated by United States Army Lieutenant Joe T. Meador in the days prior to the end of World War II in Europe. Precious church objects stored near Quedlinburg, Germany, were found by the U.S. Army. They were placed under guard, but eight extremely valuable objects went missing, including a 9th-century illuminated manuscript gospel book, the Samuhel Evangeliar (English: Samuhel Gospel), and a printed evangeliary (book of gospel readings for services) dating to 1513 (the Evangelistar aus St. Wiperti), both with jewelled book-covers, as well as reliquaries, an ivory liturgical comb, a perfume-flask made out of rock crystal and other irreplaceable artifacts of historical importance. The most famous illuminated manuscript associated with the town, the 5th-century Quedlinburg Itala fragment, once in the church, had been moved to a museum in Berlin and was not stolen. The missing artifacts started resurfacing in 1987. After various lawsuits against and negotiations with the heirs of the by-then deceased Meador, they were restored to their rightful owners. William Honan, an author and journalist working for The New York Times, published in 1997 an account of the theft and how he traced it to the Meador family.

Quedlinburg Abbey (German: Stift Quedlinburg or Reichsstift Quedlinburg) was a house of secular canonesses (Frauenstift) in Quedlinburg in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was founded in 936 on the initiative of Saint Mathilda, the widow of the East Frankish King Henry the Fowler, as his memorial. For many centuries it and its abbesses enjoyed great prestige and influence. Quedlinburg Abbey was an Imperial Estate and one of the approximately forty self-ruling Imperial Abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire. It was disestablished in 1802/3. The church, known as Stiftskirche St Servatius, is now used by the Lutheran Evangelical Church in Germany. The castle, abbey, church, and surrounding buildings are exceptionally well preserved and are masterpieces of Romanesque architecture. As a result, and because of their historical importance, the buildings were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.

Julius Kühn-Institut – Bundesforschungsinstitut für Kulturpflanzen (JKI) is the German Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants. It is a federal research institute and a higher federal authority divided into 15 specialized institutes. Its objectives, mission and research scope were determined by section 11, paragraph 57 of the 1987 Federal Law on the Protection of Cultivated Plants as subsequently amended.The JKI was named after the German agricultural scientist Julius Kühn (1825–1910). It was formed in January 2008 when three research centres in the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture merged: Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA), Federal Institute for Plant Breeding Research on crops (BAZ) and Federal Agricultural Research Centre (FAL) (two institutes)It has its main office at Quedlinburg and centres at Berlin, Braunschweig, Darmstadt, Dossenheim, Dresden-Pillnitz, Elsdorf, Groß Lüsewitz, Kleinmachnow, Münster and Siebeldingen.

Camp Quedlinburg was a prisoner-of-war camp located 2 kilometers north of Quedlinburg, Germany, during the First World War. It was built in September 1914. From 1914 to 1922, the camp housed 12,000 to 18,000 prisoners of war on average. Around 27,000 people lived in the neighbouring city of Quedlinburg at that time. There were three official branch offices in Staßfurt, Atzendorf and Aschersleben as well as other unofficial offices in Egeln, Halberstadt, Schönebeck, Groß Rodensleben, Schadeleben and Hedersleben.

Rieder is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 December 2013, it is part of the town Ballenstedt. Between 1 January 2011 and 19 February 2013, it was part of the town Quedlinburg.There is a grauwacke quarry here which is also checkpoint 61 on the Harzer Wandernadel.

Bad Suderode is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2014, it has for administrative purposes been included as part of the municipality of Quedlinburg. It is situated in a valley in the northern part of the Harz mountains, on the road from Quedlinburg to Friedrichsbrunn. The place is one of several spa resorts in the area. The local spring water is noted for its exceptionally high concentrations of calcium.

Weddersleben is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, in the Harz area. Since 1 January 2009, it is part of the town Thale. The village is well known for being located adjacent to the famed natural rock formation known as the Teufelsmauer, or "Devil's Wall" in English. Surrounding forest area has numerous paths for biking and hiking, making it a popular tourist destination for nature seekers. Among the many natural formations in the area, the Bode River flows by the edges of the village.

Gernrode (German pronunciation: [ɡɛʁnˈʁoːdə] (listen)) is a historic town and former municipality in the Harz District, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2014, it has been part of Quedlinburg. It was the seat of the former Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("municipal association") of Gernrode/Harz. First mentioned in 961, Gernrode received the privilege to bear its own coat of arms and seal, commonly regarded as town privileges. The town is best known for the Ottonian church of Saint Cyriakus, the collegiate church of a former Imperial chapter of nuns, and as the start of the narrow gauge Selke Valley Railway.

Ditfurt is a municipality in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

Saint Cyriakus (German: Stiftskirche St. Cyriakus, pronounced [ˈʃtɪftsˌkɪʁçə zaŋkt tsyˈʁi̯aːkʊs]) is a medieval church in Gernrode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is one of the few surviving examples of Ottonian architecture, built in 959/960–965 by Margrave Gero, although it was restored in the 19th century. From its foundation until 1614, Saint Cyriakus was the collegiate church of the Abbey of Gernrode, also founded by Margrave Gero. The church and the abbey became Protestant in the mid-sixteenth century, and the church is now used by the Protestant community of Gernrode. The church is part of the tourist route "Romanesque Road", as it is an important example of an Ottonian church which inspired later, fully Romanesque, churches and cathedrals.: 92
