Mumbles

Mumbles Hill is a hill near the south eastern tip of the Gower Peninsula, Wales. Parts of the hill form a designated Local Nature Reserve, declared in 1991. Defensive gunnery positions were built on the hill in World War II. Remnants of the 623rd Anti-Aircraft Battery gun emplacements and control bunker are still visible on the hill. Coastal Defence Battery 299 had a site on a hill with 6 inch gun and underground magazines, though none of this remains on the hill. However there are information boards marking the spot.

Limeslade Bay is a small cove just to the west of Bracelet Bay in the south east corner of the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea in south Wales. It is a sheltered, mainly rocky beach with little sand. Bathing is possible. There is a car park in the adjacent Bracelet Bay. From Limeslade Bay there is a cliff walk to Langland Bay, about half a mile to the west. Of note is an iron mine at the head of the bay, near the roadside. This is believed to have been worked from Roman times. It is now closed and sealed off. The bay has a varied and different geology from that of the neighbouring Bracelet Bay. This is one of the many 'slades' one finds in Gower - small valleys or dells, usually opening on to the sea. Limeslade was site of the Limeslade Mystery in 1929 - an unsolved murder.

The Grade II listed structure of Mumbles Pier is an 835 feet (255 m) long Victorian pleasure pier built in 1898. It is located at the south-western corner of Swansea Bay near the village of Mumbles, within the city and county of Swansea, Wales.

Southend railway station served the area of Mumbles, in the historical county of Glamorgan, Wales, from 1807 to 1960 on the Swansea and Mumbles Railway.

Bracelet Bay is a small bay on the south of the Gower Peninsula. It is the first bay one comes to after leaving Swansea Bay and rounding Mumbles Head. Surrounded by limestone cliffs, the bay is pebbly, with some sand. To the west, the bay is separated from Limeslade Bay by Tutt Hill, the location of a coastguard look-out station.A notable feature of the bay is the "Big Apple" kiosk, a concrete structure that was erected by the roadside during the 1930s as an advertising feature and has been a sales outlet ever since. Several similar kiosks were erected along the South Wales coast, but the one in Bracelet Bay is the only example surviving. In 2010 it was largely rebuilt after being damaged by a vehicle the previous year, and in 2019 it was designated a Grade II listed building.The name 'Bracelet' is thought to be a corruption of 'Broad Slade'.

Mumbles Beach is a very small sheltered area of sand and rock pools sandwiched between Swansea Bay beach and Bracelet Bay in the south eastern corner of the Gower Peninsula, Swansea, Wales. A lot of sea life can be found in the pools and under the rocks, left trapped by the retreating tides. During the summer, this beach can get very busy with people combing the beach for hermit crabs and small fishes. The beach is accessible from a flight of steps beside the Mumbles Pier.

The Mumbles Lifeboat Station (based in Mumbles, Swansea, Wales) opened in 1835 with a lifeboat that was funded and managed by Swansea Harbour Trustees and was known as Swansea Lifeboat Station. The station was taken over by the RNLI in 1863 and moved to Mumbles in 1866. The station only officially became The Mumbles Lifeboat Station in 1904. The station currently operates a Tamar-class lifeboat and a D-class (IB1) lifeboat, and operates from a boathouse at the end of Mumbles Pier.

Mumbles Lighthouse, completed in 1794, is a lighthouse located in Mumbles, near Swansea. The structure, which sits on the outer of two islands off Mumbles Head, is clearly visible from any point along the five mile sweep of Swansea Bay. Along with the nearby lifeboat station, it is the most photographed landmark in the village. The tower has two tiers and initially two open coal fire lights were displayed. These open coal fire lights were difficult to maintain and were soon replaced by a single oil-powered light within a cast-iron lantern.In 1860, the oil-powered light was upgraded to a dioptric light and the Mumbles Battery, a fort that surrounds the tower, was built by the War Department.In 1905, an occulting mechanism, where the light was made to flash, was fitted. This was partially automated in 1934.By 1977, the cast-iron lantern had deteriorated beyond repair and was removed. A different lantern was added in 1987.In 1995, the main light was replaced and an array of solar panels and emergency monitoring equipment were added.

Mumbles Battery is a battery on the north coast of the Bristol Channel overlooking Swansea. It was built around the base of the Mumbles Lighthouse. It is one of the many Palmerston Forts built in response to a perceived French invasion, and was designed to protect Swansea Bay. Construction of the battery began in 1859 and was completed by 1861 at a cost of £8,760.It mounted five 80 pounder rifled muzzle loading (RML) guns, two in casemates and three on the roof. From 1892 the battery was reduced to care and maintenance and used for practise by the Glamorganshire Artillery Volunteers. Between 1899 and 1901 the obsolete RML guns were removed and replaced by two 4.7-inch quick-firing (QF) guns on the roof of the battery. During the Second World War the defences of the Bristol Channel were increased significantly. In 1940 the two 4.7-inch guns were operated by soldiers from the 531st (Glamorgan) Coast Regiment, Royal Artillery. Well before the end of the war, as the German threat decreased, the battery was placed into care and maintenance. The battery was declared surplus to requirements in 1956 upon the dissolution of the UK's coast artillery. The guns were dismounted and the battery disposed of.

All Saints' Church, Oystermouth is an Anglican church in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, South Wales. It is located in Mumbles and is a Grade II listed building (listed 23 April 1952 as "a large church with substantial medieval fabric and good interior detail including early medieval piscina and font and C20 glass") The church stands on a hillside, not far from Oystermouth Castle.The building is estimated to have been built in the mid-12th century, having first been mentioned in writing in 1141. It originally consisted of a tower on its western side, a nave and a lower chancel; the former nave are now the south aisle. A porch was constructed on the northern side in the 19th century, and in 1873 an organ chamber and vestry were built, to the design of Richard Kyrke Penson. The church was substantially reconstructed in 1915, adding a new nave and chancel and a north aisle. The formerchancel became the Lady Chapel. Oak panels for the altar in the Lady Chapel were carved in 1937 by the Revd J. D. Davies.The stained glass in the church includes a memorial window, commemorating the Mumbles lifeboat disaster of 1947; it shows lifeboatmen at work and was designed by Glantawe Studios and installed in 1977. There are memorials in the churchyard to the eight members of the Mumbles lifeboat crew who were killed in the incident.The most notable grave in the churchyard is that of the English doctor and editor Thomas Bowdler, who died in Swansea in 1825.

The Mumbles is a district of Swansea, Wales, located on the south-east corner of the unitary authority area. It is also a local government community using the same name. At the 2001 census the population was 16,774, reduced slightly to 16,600 at the 2011 Census. The district is named after the headland of Mumbles, located on its south-east corner.
