The Mediapolis Community School District, or Mediapolis Schools, is a rural public school district headquartered in Mediapolis, Iowa. It is mostly within Des Moines County, with a small area in Louisa County, and serves the city of Mediapolis and the surrounding rural areas.Greg Ray has been the superintendent since 2009. Incumbent Superintendent Adam Magliari will start in June 2023.

Baptist Church, also known as Stone Church, is a historic church building in Sperry, Iowa, United States. The Baptist congregation that built this church was founded in 1840. They built this building seven years later. In addition to religious services, it was the meeting place for a variety of community events. The church building is surrounded by a cemetery, which contains the graves of some of the areas first settlers. The utilitarian design of the church building and the use of local materials is characteristic of pioneer church architecture in Iowa. The 48-by-36-foot (15 by 11 m) building is a single-story, gable roof structure. It features a cornice return. The roughly cut stone exterior uses larger stones at the corners for a decorative effect. The interior walls are plaster and the flooring are pine boards. It still houses the original hardwood pews, pulpit, minister's settee, and hand-carved altar. The building was damaged in a tornado in 1964, and the repairs conform to the original character of the church. It was added to the National Register in 1977.

Its elevation is 751 feet (229 m). Although Sperry is unincorporated, it has a post office with the ZIP code of 52650, which opened on 5 February 1870.The community is part of the Burlington, IA–IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Bethel Church is a historic church building in rural Morning Sun, Iowa, United States. The congregation was organized by the Wapello mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa in 1854. In addition to the Morning Sun congregation, the Wapello mission included congregations in Concord, Long Creek, and two in Wapello. The property for the church building and its adjacent cemetery was donated by Merit Jamison. Members of the congregation built the building under the supervision of stonemason Francis McGraw. The limestone structure is a Vernacular form of Iowa folk architecture. The small cornice returns are influenced by the Greek Revival style. The plain interior features plastered walls, plank flooring and wood-carved furnishings from the church's early years. The iron fence that runs along the gravel road was added in 1861. The church is no used for regularly scheduled services. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Otter Creek is a stream in Louisa County, Iowa, in the United States. It is a tributary of the Iowa River. Otter Creek was so named because early settlers saw otters in the creek.

Florence-Council On The Iowa Site is a former town site and Native American village site located near Oakville, Iowa, United States in Louisa County. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.Florence was a settlement along the Iowa River that existed from 1836 to 1846. Prior to that, it was the village site of the Sauk people and home to Black Hawk and Keokuk, who debated here retaking the tribal lands in Illinois. It was at this place where the followers of Black Hawk rallied before they crossed into Illinois to reclaim their lands, which led to the Black Hawk War of 1832. In the treaty that followed the hostilities, the area was known as "Keokuk's Principal Village." Florence developed after the Native Americans left the area in 1836. There is no record of the village having ever been platted, but it did contain a tavern, at least one retail establishment and a ferry service. A post office was established on July 5, 1839, with John Deihl, a merchant, as postmaster. It was discontinued on February 11, 1846.

Des Moines County sits on Iowa's eastern border alongside the Mississippi River. The city of Des Moines is in Polk County in central Iowa. Both places derive their name from the Des Moines River, which flows through the city of Des Moines and originally flowed through the county. When the county was divided early in Iowa's history, the river ended up further west, forming the border between Lee County, Iowa and the state of Missouri.
