Newbattle High School (formerly Newbattle Community High School) is a non-denominational secondary state school located in Easthouses, Midlothian, Scotland within Newbattle Community Campus, which opened to the public on 26 May 2018. It is run by Midlothian Council and has approximately 900 pupils on roll in six-year groups from ages 11 up to 18, and serves the settlements of Easthouses, Mayfield, Gorebridge and Newtongrange plus the small villages of North Middleton, Temple and Borthwick and their surrounding areas. As of 2018 the school has been designated a Digital Centre for Excellence.

Easthouses is a settlement in Midlothian, Scotland, lying to the east of Newtongrange and south of Dalkeith. It forms the northern extension of the settlement of Mayfield, with which it is closely associated; the two communities have a combined population of around 7,900.Primarily based on public housing, Easthouses developed in the 1920s to accommodate miners for the nearby Easthouses Colliery, many of whom relocated from the west of Scotland. The settlement was significantly extended in the 1950s. Employment has diversified since the closure of local mines, with many of the population now commuting to Edinburgh. The Easthouses Parish Church (built 1954) is of minor architectural interest.

Mayfield is a community in Midlothian, Scotland, located just south of Dalkeith near Edinburgh between the A68 and the A7 south. It had an estimated population of 13,690 in 2020.This housing development was built in the 1950s as overspill accommodation for the colliery workers of nearby Newtongrange and Easthouses and for other essential workers, as well as to house the workforce for a small but relatively successful industrial estate. The decline of the coal industry in the 1980s led to the closure of the collieries. The massive growth in population in this part of Newbattle parish in the 1950s led to the existing mining village of Easthouses being virtually 'swallowed up' into the new housing development of Mayfield, which today has a population similar to that of a small town. With the communities of Mayfield and Easthouses ever expanding, in 1955 the Church of Scotland had an additional church building erected within Newbattle parish. Mayfield and Easthouses church was built in a more utilitarian and functional style than the 18th century building at Newbattle, as it had to double as both a place of worship and a place where the various church and other organisations (e.g. Boys Brigade [Anchor Boys, Junior Section, and Company Section], Girls Brigade, Cubs, Scouts, and Brownies) could establish themselves. There are three primary schools: Mayfield Primary School which is conjoined with St. Luke's RC Primary School, and Lawfield Primary School (a new school made up of the former Langlaw Primary and Bryans Primary).

Newtongrange (listen ) is a former mining village in Midlothian, Scotland. Known in local dialect as Nitten, or Nitten by the Bing (listen ), it became Scotland's largest mining village in the 1890s, with the sinking of the Lady Victoria Colliery and a shaft over 1600 feet deep. This closed in 1981 but today houses the National Mining Museum, an Anchor Point of ERIH - The European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Newbattle (from Neubotle, i.e. new dwelling) is a village and civil parish in Midlothian, in the ancient Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Andrews, about seven miles from Edinburgh. There was an abbey there founded about 1140, being the second of the six Cistercian Monasteries established by King David I of Scotland. The civil parish had a population of 21,534 (in 2011).

Newbattle Abbey (Scottish Gaelic: Abaid a' Bhatail Nuaidh) was a Cistercian monastery near the village of Newbattle in Midlothian, Scotland, which subsequently become a stately home and then an educational institution.

The National Mining Museum Scotland was created in 1984, to preserve the physical surface remains of Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, Midlothian, Scotland. The colliery, sunk by the Lothian Coal Company in 1890, came into production in 1894. It was nationalised in 1947 with the formation of the National Coal Board, and had closed in 1981.

Newtongrange is a railway station on the Borders Railway, which runs between Edinburgh Waverley and Tweedbank. The station, situated 11 miles 77 chains (19 km) south-east of Edinburgh Waverley, serves the town of Newtongrange in Midlothian, Scotland. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by ScotRail.

Newtongrange Star Football Club is a Scottish football club based in the village of Newtongrange, Midlothian. The home ground is New Victoria Park. The facility includes an enclosed pitch with full floodlighting, covered enclosure, changing rooms, with a separate social club. The club also runs an actively used 7-a-side all-weather pitch, also floodlit.

Dalkeith ( dal-KEETH; Scottish Gaelic: Dail Cheith, IPA:[ˈt̪alˈçe]) is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, on the River Esk. It was granted a burgh of barony in 1401 and a burgh of regality in 1540. The settlement of Dalkeith grew southwestwards from its 12th-century castle (now Dalkeith Palace). Dalkeith has a population of 12,342 people according to the 2011 census.The town is divided into four distinct areas: Dalkeith proper with its town centre and historic core; Eskbank (considered to be the well-heeled neighbourhood of Dalkeith with many large Victorian and newer houses) to its west; Woodburn (primarily a working class council estate with pockets of new housing developments) to its east; and Newbattle (a semi-rural village with its abbey) to the south.Dalkeith is the main administrative centre for Midlothian. It is twinned with Jarnac, France. In 2004, Midlothian Council re-paved Jarnac Court in honour of Dalkeith and Jarnac's long standing link. On the north-eastern edge of Dalkeith at Woodburn is the Dalkeith Campus (completed 2003) – housing both Dalkeith High School and St David's Roman Catholic High School plus community leisure facilities.

Whitehill ( ) is a village in Midlothian in the south-east of Scotland, approximately 1.5 miles (2 km) south-east of Dalkeith and 8.5 miles (13.6 km) from Edinburgh. The village is situated on the northwest slope of the Mayfield-Tranent ridge which spans the border between Midlothian and East Lothian. Both road entrances to the village offer magnificent panoramic views over Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth and the Pentland Hills.

Dalkeith Thistle Football Club are a Scottish football club from the town of Dalkeith, Midlothian. Formed in 1892, the team plays in the East of Scotland Football League (Conference B), having moved from the junior leagues in 2018.Dalkeith Thistle's home strip is black and gold. Their change strip is navy blue and sky blue. They play their home matches at King's Park, which has room for roughly 2,000 spectators. The new pavilion was erected in 2007, and floodlights were installed at the ground in 2013. There is also a community and youth wing to the club which operates out of Cowden Park in the town's Woodburn neighbourhood.From 2020, newly formed EoSFL adult team Edinburgh South will ground-share at Dalkeith, due to the ground used by their many youth teams in The Inch, Edinburgh not meeting requirements.
